CCNA lab 1
Basic device setup and SSH-ready management
Secure a new router and switch: hostnames, enable secret, console password, banner, management IPs, SSH, and save.
About 25 minutes 3 devices 10 tasksBeginner
Scenario
A new branch router and access switch have arrived with factory defaults. Before they go into the rack, give them names, lock down privileged and console access, add a legal banner, put both on the management network, make the router reachable by SSH only, and save the configuration so it survives a reload. PC1 is already set up as 192.168.1.10/24 with gateway 192.168.1.1.
Your tasks
- Name the router R1 and the switch SW1.
- Protect privileged EXEC on both devices with the enable secret Sup3rSecret.
- Require the password C0nsole on the console line of both devices.
- Make sure no password is shown in clear text in either configuration.
- Show a message of the day containing "Authorized access only" on both devices.
- Give R1 GigabitEthernet0/0/0 the address 192.168.1.1/24 and bring it up.
- Make SW1 manageable at 192.168.1.2/24 (VLAN 1) with default gateway 192.168.1.1.
- Allow only SSH version 2 to R1's VTY lines, logging in as user admin with secret Adm1nPass. Use the domain courseiva.lab and an RSA key of at least 1024 bits.
- PC1 can ping both R1 (192.168.1.1) and SW1 (192.168.1.2).
- Save the configuration on both devices.
The lab checks the result, not the exact commands. For example, a ping task passes only when the ping really succeeds through the network you built.
