Inter-VLAN routing on a Layer 3 switch (SVIs)

Route between two VLANs with switched virtual interfaces on a Catalyst 3650, then add a routed uplink and a default route to the edge router.

About 25 minutes 4 devices 5 tasksIntermediate

Scenario

DSW1 is a Catalyst 3650 that will replace the router-on-a-stick design. PC1 (Sales) is on Gi1/0/1 and PC2 (HR) on Gi1/0/2; both PCs already point at .1 gateways. Create the VLANs, give DSW1 an SVI in each one, turn on IP routing, and make Gi1/0/24 a routed uplink to R1 so both VLANs reach the internet host 8.8.8.8. R1 already has a route back to 192.168.0.0/16.

Your tasks

  1. Create VLAN 10 named SALES and VLAN 20 named HR, and put Gi1/0/1 in VLAN 10 and Gi1/0/2 in VLAN 20 as access ports.
  2. Give DSW1 the gateway addresses: interface Vlan10 192.168.10.1/24 and Vlan20 192.168.20.1/24, both up.
  3. Turn on IP routing so PC1 (VLAN 10) can ping PC2 (VLAN 20).
  4. Make Gi1/0/24 a routed port with address 10.0.0.1/30 and add a default route to R1 (10.0.0.2).
  5. PC1 and PC2 can both ping 8.8.8.8.

The lab checks the result, not the exact commands. For example, a ping task passes only when the ping really succeeds through the network you built.
