PK0-005 Project Management Concepts Practice Test 3 — 15 Questions

Question 1

A project sponsor is responsible for providing resources and championing the project. Which of the following is also a primary responsibility of the project sponsor?

Accepted Answer

Resolving conflicts that are escalated beyond the project manager's authority. The project sponsor provides executive support, secures funding, removes obstacles, and is ultimately accountable for project success. They often help resolve issues escalated by the project manager.

Answer

Performing quality control inspections

Answer

Attending daily stand-up meetings

Answer

Creating the project schedule

Question 2

An organization has multiple projects that are not directly related but are all aimed at achieving the company's strategic goal of expanding into new markets. Which term best describes this collection?

Accepted Answer

Portfolio. A portfolio is a collection of projects, programs, and operations that are grouped together to facilitate effective management and achieve strategic business objectives. Because the projects described are not directly related to each other but all support the strategic goal of market expansion, they form a portfolio. Programs, by contrast, group related projects managed in a coordinated way.

Answer

Operation

Answer

Question 3

A project team is adding extra features to a deliverable that were not requested by the customer, in an effort to improve the product. This practice is known as:

Accepted Answer

Gold plating. Gold plating is the practice of adding features or functionality beyond what the customer requested or what the scope defines, usually with the intent of improving the product or pleasing the customer. It is considered a scope-related risk because it consumes budget and schedule without customer approval and can introduce untested defects.

Answer

Benchmarking

Answer

Value engineering

Answer

Scope creep

Question 4

A company is considering a project with an initial investment of $100,000 and expected annual cash inflows of $30,000 for 5 years. The discount rate is 10%. What is the approximate Net Present Value (NPV)? (Present value of annuity factor for 5 years at 10% is 3.791)

Accepted Answer

$13,730. NPV discounts future cash inflows back to present value and subtracts the initial investment. Using the annuity factor: PV of inflows = $30,000 × 3.791 = $113,730. NPV = $113,730 − $100,000 = $13,730, which is positive, meaning the project adds value at a 10% discount rate.

Answer

$50,000

Answer

-$13,730

Answer

$150,000

Question 5

In which type of organizational structure does the project manager have the least authority?

Accepted Answer

Functional. In a functional organizational structure, the project manager has the least authority because team members report to functional managers, and the project manager acts more as a coordinator. The functional manager controls resources and priorities, leaving the project manager with limited power.

Answer

Projectized

Answer

Balanced matrix

Answer

Strong matrix

Question 6

A project to build a website is expected to take 6 months with a fixed budget. During planning, the team determines that the requirements are well-understood and unlikely to change. Which methodology is most appropriate?

Accepted Answer

Predictive. A predictive (waterfall) methodology is most appropriate when requirements are well-understood, stable, and unlikely to change, and when the project has a fixed budget and timeline. Predictive approaches emphasize upfront planning, sequential phases, and formal change control, which aligns with the 6-month fixed-budget website project with clear requirements. Agile, Scrum, and Kanban are better suited for evolving or uncertain requirements.

Answer

Kanban

Answer

Agile

Answer

Scrum

Question 7

Which TWO of the following are primary responsibilities of the project manager? (Select two.)

Accepted Answer

Communicating project status to stakeholders. Option B is correct because communicating project status to stakeholders is a core project manager responsibility—the PM provides regular performance reports, progress updates, and status information to keep stakeholders informed and manage expectations. Option D is correct because managing the project team—including assigning work, motivating members, resolving conflicts, and developing team capabilities—is a fundamental PM duty throughout the project lifecycle. Option A is not a PM responsibility; project funding is typically provided by the sponsor or executive management, not the PM. Option C is not a PM responsibility; defining the company's strategic goals belongs to senior leadership or executive management. Option E is not a PM responsibility; issues escalated above the PM's authority are resolved by the sponsor or higher management, not the PM.

Answer

Providing project funding

Answer

Defining the company's strategic goals

Answer

Resolving escalated issues above the PM's authority

Question 8

A project is falling behind schedule. The project manager considers crashing or fast-tracking. Which THREE statements about these techniques are correct? (Select three.)

Accepted Answer

Both techniques are used to compress the schedule.. Option A is correct because both crashing and fast-tracking are schedule compression techniques used to shorten the project duration when a project is falling behind schedule. Option B is correct because crashing adds resources (people, equipment, overtime, or expediting) to critical path activities, which typically increases project cost. Option C is correct because fast-tracking overlaps activities that would normally be done sequentially, without necessarily adding resources. Option D is incorrect because crashing focuses on critical path activities, not non-critical path activities, since only critical path compression shortens the overall schedule. Option E is incorrect because fast-tracking usually increases risk due to overlapping activities and potential rework, rather than reducing risk.

Answer

Crashing focuses on non-critical path activities.

Answer

Fast-tracking reduces risk.

Question 9

Which TWO of the following are examples of gold plating? (Select two.)

Accepted Answer

Including an additional reporting module that was not specified. Gold plating means delivering extra functionality or quality beyond what was agreed in scope, without the customer requesting it. Option B is correct because adding an additional reporting module that was not specified introduces unrequested scope, which is a classic example of gold plating. Option D is correct because using higher quality materials than specified to improve durability exceeds the agreed requirements and adds unrequested value, also gold plating. Option A is not gold plating because the feature was requested by the customer after scope approval, making it a scope change rather than unrequested extra work. Option C is not gold plating because removing a feature reduces scope and cost rather than adding unrequested functionality. Option E is not gold plating because correcting a defect is required quality work to meet the agreed specification, not extra scope.

Answer

Adding a feature the customer requested after scope approval

Answer

Removing a feature to reduce cost

Answer

Correcting a defect found during testing

Question 10

A project manager is assigned to a new software development project. The requirements are well understood and unlikely to change. Which project management methodology is most appropriate for this project?

Accepted Answer

Predictive. Predictive (waterfall) methodology is correct because it relies on detailed upfront planning and sequential execution, which works best when requirements are stable and well understood. Since the project has clear, unchanging requirements, the predictive approach minimizes risk and provides a structured, predictable path to completion. Agile and Scrum are designed for evolving requirements and iterative feedback, which are unnecessary here and could introduce inefficiency.

Answer

Hybrid

Answer

Scrum

Answer

Agile

Question 11

In which organizational structure does the project manager have the least authority over project resources?

Accepted Answer

Functional. In a functional organizational structure, staff are grouped by specialty (e.g., IT, finance, HR) and report to functional managers who control budgets, resources, and assignments. The project manager has little to no formal authority and must negotiate for resources, often acting more as a coordinator. This is the weakest PM authority position on the classic PM authority spectrum: Functional < Weak Matrix < Balanced Matrix < Strong Matrix < Projectized.

Answer

Projectized

Answer

Balanced matrix

Answer

Strong matrix

Question 12

During a project, the team adds extra features to a deliverable because they believe it will increase customer satisfaction, even though the features were not specified in the requirements. This is an example of:

Accepted Answer

Gold plating. Gold plating is the deliberate addition of features or functionality that were not requested in the requirements, typically done by the team believing it adds value. Because the team voluntarily added unrequested features to increase customer satisfaction, this matches the definition of gold plating exactly. It differs from scope creep, which is uncontrolled expansion of scope usually driven by stakeholders or changing requirements rather than the team's own initiative.

Answer

Scope creep

Answer

Risk response

Answer

Value engineering

Question 13

A project manager is evaluating two project proposals. Project A has an initial investment of $100,000 and is expected to generate cash flows of $30,000 per year for 5 years. Project B has an initial investment of $50,000 and cash flows of $20,000 per year for 3 years. Using payback period, which project should be selected?

Accepted Answer

Project B, because it has a shorter payback period. Payback period measures how long it takes to recover the initial investment. Project A recovers $100,000 at $30,000/year, taking about 3.33 years. Project B recovers $50,000 at $20,000/year, taking 2.5 years. Since Project B has the shorter payback period, it is preferred under this selection method because the organization recovers its capital faster, reducing risk exposure.

Answer

Project A, because it has a longer payback period

Answer

Project B, because it has a lower initial investment

Answer

Project A, because it has a higher total return

Question 14

A project manager is working in a matrix organization. The project team members report to both the project manager and their functional managers. The project manager has moderate authority and shares resources. This type of matrix is known as:

Accepted Answer

Balanced matrix. In a balanced matrix organization, the project manager has moderate authority and shares resources with functional managers, who retain roughly equal control over team members. This dual-reporting arrangement is the defining characteristic of the balanced matrix, distinguishing it from the strong matrix (where the PM has more authority) and the weak matrix (where the functional manager dominates). The scenario explicitly states 'moderate authority' and 'shares resources,' which maps directly to the balanced matrix definition in PMBOK.

Answer

Functional

Answer

Strong matrix

Answer

Weak matrix

Question 15

Which of the following best describes a program?

Accepted Answer

A group of related projects managed in a coordinated way. A program is a group of related projects managed in a coordinated manner to obtain benefits and control not available from managing them individually. Program management focuses on interdependencies, shared resources, and collective benefits realization across the constituent projects.

Answer

A process to select projects based on business value

Answer

A temporary endeavor with a defined start and end

Answer

A collection of projects and programs aligned to strategic objectives
