Cisco Certification Path

From network associate to professional — the networking industry standard

3–5 years from CCNA to CCIE; CCNA achievable in 3–5 months
13 certifications across 3 levels

Cisco certifications are the gold standard for networking careers. The CCNA is the baseline credential globally — recognised by virtually every employer that runs a network. The path moves from Associate (CCNA) to Professional (CCNP, which splits into technology tracks) to Expert (CCIE). All Cisco certifications are valid for 3 years and can be renewed by passing any current CCNA, CCNP, or CCIE exam.

Where to start — by experience level

New to networking

Start with CCNA 200-301. No prerequisites — but study CompTIA Network+ concepts first if you have no networking background.

Hold CCNA, moving to CCNP

350-401 ENCOR (CCNP Enterprise core) + one concentration. ENARSI (300-410) is the most common concentration for routing/switching engineers.

Security-focused engineer

CCNA → CyberOps Associate (200-201) → CCNP Security (350-701 + concentration). Pairs well with Security+.

Network automation / DevOps

CCNA → DevNet Associate (200-901) → ENAUTO concentration (300-435).

Cisco certification — frequently asked questions

What is the Cisco certification path for 2026?

The recommended Cisco certification path for 2026 is: (1) CCNA 200-301 — the entry-level baseline, achievable in 3–5 months with no prerequisites; (2) CCNP Enterprise (350-401 ENCOR core + one concentration such as ENARSI 300-410) — the professional tier, 4–8 months after CCNA; (3) CCIE Enterprise — the expert-level lab exam, typically 2–4 years of experience required. Security-focused engineers should follow CCNA → CyberOps Associate → CCNP Security. DevOps and automation engineers should follow CCNA → DevNet Associate → ENAUTO. All Cisco certs are valid for 3 years.

Do I need CCNA before attempting CCNP?

No — Cisco removed the CCNA prerequisite for CCNP in 2020. However, CCNP content assumes solid networking fundamentals. CCNA-level knowledge or equivalent real-world experience is strongly recommended before attempting ENCOR.

How many exams does CCNP Enterprise require?

Two: the ENCOR 350-401 core exam plus one concentration exam of your choice (e.g., ENARSI for routing/switching, ENWLSI for wireless, ENAUTO for automation).

How long are Cisco certifications valid?

All Cisco certifications are valid for 3 years. Renew by passing any current CCNA, CCNP core, or CCIE written exam, or by accumulating Continuing Education credits through Cisco.

Is CCNA worth it in 2026?

Yes — the CCNA remains the definitive baseline networking credential. Even as cloud and automation grow, physical and virtual networking fundamentals are required in every enterprise. CCNA holders command significantly higher starting salaries than non-certified peers.
