CompTIA Certification Path

Vendor-neutral IT certifications — the foundation every IT career is built on

A+ to Security+ in 6–12 months part-time; full stack 2–3 years
11 certifications across 4 levels

CompTIA certifications are vendor-neutral — they validate concepts and skills that apply across platforms, making them the preferred entry point for IT careers worldwide. The Core series (A+, Network+, Security+) is a rite of passage for IT generalists. Security+ is required by the US DoD 8570 mandate. CompTIA certifications renew every 3 years through Continuing Education credits or re-examination.

Where to start — by experience level

Complete beginner to IT

ITF+ if you need the very basics, then A+. A+ is the standard first credential for IT support and helpdesk roles.

Helpdesk / A+ already done

Network+ next — it dramatically expands your troubleshooting skills and is a prerequisite for Security+.

Moving into cybersecurity

A+ → Network+ → Security+ is the CompTIA cybersecurity pathway. Each builds directly on the previous. Security+ is DoD-required.

Security+ holder, going deeper

CySA+ for blue team / analyst roles. PenTest+ for offensive security / pen testing. CASP+ for senior security architects.

CompTIA certification — frequently asked questions

Should I take A+ before Network+?

Officially, no — there are no prerequisites. Practically, A+ hardware and OS knowledge helps significantly with Network+ troubleshooting scenarios. Most people benefit from taking them in order.

Is Security+ worth it in 2026?

Yes — Security+ is one of the highest-ROI certifications in IT. It's required by the US DoD 8570/8140 mandate, preferred by every major consulting firm, and opens doors into cybersecurity roles globally.

How do CompTIA certifications renew?

CompTIA certifications are valid for 3 years and renew through the Continuing Education (CE) program — earning CE units via approved activities (courses, conferences, higher certs) or by retaking the exam. Higher CompTIA certs automatically renew lower ones.

What's the difference between CySA+ and PenTest+?

CySA+ is defensive — threat detection, incident response, vulnerability management (blue team). PenTest+ is offensive — penetration testing methodology, tools, and reporting (red team). CASP+ covers both at expert level.
