OSPF: multi-area design and DR election control

Build a two-area OSPF network with an ABR, control which router becomes DR on a shared segment, and keep a router out of the election entirely.

About 35 minutes 7 devices 3 tasksAdvanced

Scenario

R1, R2 and R3 share the backbone segment 10.0.0.0/24 through SW1 (area 0). R3 is the ABR to area 1: the link to R4 (10.0.34.0/30) and R4's LAN (192.168.4.0/24) are in area 1. R1 is the core router and must be the DR on the shared segment; R2 is a low-end box that must never become DR or BDR. Use OSPF process 1 with router IDs 1.1.1.1 to 4.4.4.4.

Your tasks

  1. All adjacencies are FULL: R1, R2 and R3 in area 0 and R3–R4 in area 1.
  2. R1 is the DR on the shared segment and R2 is never DR or BDR.
  3. R1 learns R4's LAN as an inter-area route and PC1 can ping PC4.

The lab checks the result, not the exact commands. For example, a ping task passes only when the ping really succeeds through the network you built.
