Tableau-Desktop-Found Exploring and Analyzing Data — 50 Questions

Question 1

You have a large dataset and need to improve dashboard performance while exploring trends. Which TWO actions should you perform to reduce the initial query load on the data source?

Accepted Answer

Apply a Data Source filter to limit the date range.. Reducing query volume is essential for maintaining a responsive Tableau dashboard. By implementing Data Source filters, you permanently exclude unnecessary data before it reaches the visualization level. Combining this with context filters ensures that only the relevant subset of data is processed by top-N or conditional filters, significantly optimizing the computational load during the initial render and subsequent user interactions in the explorer interface.

Answer

Convert all dimensions to attributes.

Answer

Use a custom SQL query for every visualization.

Answer

Increase the number of dashboard worksheets.

Question 2

Refer to the exhibit. You are writing a calculated field: IF [Sales] > AVG([Sales]) THEN 'Above Average' ELSE 'Below Average' END. Why does this calculation trigger the error?

Accepted Answer

The expression compares a raw row-level value to an aggregated value.. Tableau requires that all arguments in an expression be aggregated consistently. In this formula, [Sales] is a row-level value, while AVG([Sales]) is an aggregate calculation. When you compare a single row value against an aggregate, the software cannot determine if the comparison should happen before or after the aggregation. To resolve this, you must aggregate both sides, typically using the ATTR() function or another aggregate like SUM().

Answer

The Sales field is a measure and must be converted to a dimension.

Answer

The IF statement is not supported for measure comparisons.

Answer

The AVG function is only available for table calculations.

Question 3

When analyzing performance data, which THREE factors directly influence the results of a Top N filter?

Accepted Answer

The sort order of the data.. Top N filters rely on three critical components: the field being measured, the dimension defining the 'N' items, and the context of the view. The sort order and any existing dimension filters (especially if added to context) will change which records are evaluated. Understanding this sequence is vital because it determines whether you are seeing the top performers globally or the top performers within a filtered subset of data.

Answer

The number of rows in the underlying data source.

Answer

The font size used in the workbook.

Question 4

Which THREE of the following are valid ways to create a reference line in a Tableau view?

Accepted Answer

Drag Reference Line from the Analytics pane.. Reference lines are essential for adding context to quantitative data. You can add them through the Analytics pane by dragging them onto the view, by right-clicking an axis to add them directly, or by using the 'Add Reference Line' dialog in the Format menu. These methods allow you to display constants, calculated values, or statistical summaries, providing clear benchmarks for evaluating performance against goals or historical averages.

Answer

Drag a dimension to the Detail mark.

Answer

Modify the column shelf properties.

Question 5

Refer to the exhibit. You are reviewing the query performance log for a slow-loading visualization. Based on the JSON log provided, what is the most likely cause of the latency?

Accepted Answer

The visualization relies on heavy Table Calculations. The presence of a table calculation combined with a large number of processed rows is a common performance bottleneck. Table calculations are computed in memory after the data is retrieved from the source. When combined with a high volume of rows, the overhead of performing these sequential operations significantly increases latency. Optimizing the data grain or moving logic to the data layer is the recommended solution here.

Answer

The filter type is set to Data Source

Answer

The query time is within acceptable limits

Answer

Dimension filters are automatically optimized

Question 6

You are building a report and need to see how the percentage of total sales has changed over time for each product category. Which Table Calculation is most appropriate for this requirement?

Accepted Answer

Percent of Total. The 'Percent of Total' table calculation allows for a quick understanding of how individual categories contribute to a whole over specific time periods. By partitioning the calculation by time and addressing the categories, you can easily spot trends in market share or category contribution. This technique is fundamental for business analysts looking to decompose aggregate figures into more meaningful component parts during data exploration.

Answer

Running Total

Answer

Moving Average

Answer

Year-over-Year Growth

Question 7

When using Groups and Sets in Tableau, which THREE statements are accurate regarding their functionality and application in data exploration?

Accepted Answer

Sets can be used to compare 'In' vs 'Out' members. Groups and Sets are vital for segmenting data. Groups create static, manual categories, while Sets provide dynamic, conditional logic based on specific criteria. Understanding the difference allows analysts to choose the right tool for categorical vs. functional data grouping. Mastery of these features enables users to perform deeper segmentation and comparative analysis without modifying the underlying data source, which is key for flexible exploration in Tableau.

Answer

Groups can be created based on conditional rules

Answer

Sets are static and cannot change over time

Question 8

When analyzing data, you want to show the relationship between two measures while also seeing the distribution of each measure on the margins of the view. Which chart type is best suited for this?

Accepted Answer

Combined histogram and scatter plot. A marginal histogram (often called a scatter plot with marginal distributions) is specifically designed to show the correlation between two variables while displaying the individual distributions on the axes. This is a powerful analytical technique for identifying clusters and understanding the range of data for both measures simultaneously. Using this format helps analysts detect patterns that a standard scatter plot might mask due to overlapping points.

Answer

Dual-axis scatter plot

Answer

Heat map

Answer

Bullet graph

Question 9

Refer to the exhibit. You are troubleshooting a dashboard filter that seems to be ignoring the Top N ranking. Based on the JSON policy, what is the issue?

Accepted Answer

The filter is applied before the Context filter. The 'Exclude_From_Context' setting means the filter is being applied before the context filters. Because Top N filters rely on the results of context-filtered data, a global filter that is excluded from context will calculate the ranking on the entire dataset instead of the subset. This creates a logical mismatch, causing the ranking to show unexpected results during interactive dashboard explorations.

Answer

The filter is not set to include nulls

Answer

The dashboard scope is too narrow

Answer

The filter action is missing a parameter

Question 10

Which THREE data types in Tableau are natively supported for geographic visualization when using the mapping feature?

Accepted Answer

Country. Tableau uses built-in geocoding to identify specific geographic entities. Knowing which types are supported helps analysts clean their data and prepare fields for mapping. When data is correctly identified as a geographic role, Tableau can automatically generate latitude and longitude coordinates. This is fundamental for spatial analysis and creating professional-grade maps that provide context to location-based business data, such as sales territories or shipping logistics.

Answer

IP Address

Answer

Department ID

Question 11

Which method should you use to create a combined field that merges 'City' and 'State' for more readable map labels?

Accepted Answer

Create a Combined Field. The most efficient way to combine fields is to select them in the Data pane and choose 'Create > Combined Field'. This creates a new, concatenated dimension that is ready for use in labels or tooltips. This simple data preparation task improves dashboard clarity and user readability, which is essential for ensuring that complex geographic data is presented in an accessible and professional manner.

Answer

Use a calculated field with string concatenation

Answer

Create a set from both fields

Modify the data source join

Question 12

You have a view showing 'Sales' by 'Region'. You want to highlight the 'West' region across all sheets in your dashboard. Which TWO actions would effectively achieve this? (Select two)

Accepted Answer

Select the 'West' mark, right-click, and choose Highlight Selected Items.. Highlighting is a powerful tool for visual cross-analysis. By using a highlight action, you enable interactivity that allows users to see the relationship between data points across multiple independent views. This facilitates data exploration by ensuring that context is maintained, helping analysts identify patterns that might otherwise be hidden when looking at disjointed, static charts on a single dashboard layout.

Answer

Create a filter for Region and set it to 'Apply to all worksheets using this data source'.

Answer

Change the color of the 'West' region mark to red in the Color legend.

Answer

Use the 'Group' function to combine all other regions into an 'Other' category.

Question 13

You need to show the trend of Sales over time but want to prevent users from seeing data prior to 2021. What is the most robust way to handle this?

Accepted Answer

Use a Data Source Filter on the Date field.. Applying a relative or range date filter is the standard approach for controlling temporal data. By using a 'Start Date' filter, you ensure that the view only processes the relevant records. This improves performance and keeps the visualization clean. It is a fundamental practice in dashboard design to filter for relevant time periods to provide actionable insights while maintaining optimal loading times.

Answer

Create a set of years and drag it to the Filter shelf as an Exclude filter.

Answer

Use the 'Hide' function on the columns in the visualization.

Answer

Add a calculated field that returns null for years before 2021 and filter by non-null.

Question 14

Which THREE actions will improve the performance of a dashboard that is experiencing slow load times due to a large dataset and complex filters? (Select three)

Accepted Answer

Implement Data Source filters to limit the number of rows.. Optimizing dashboard performance is crucial for user adoption. By limiting the data volume through filters, simplifying calculations, and utilizing database-level optimizations, you ensure that the system remains responsive. Focusing on these areas creates a better user experience and allows for deeper, faster data exploration without the frustration of long wait times during interactions or initial load sequences.

Answer

Use many discrete Quick Filters for every dimension in the view.

Answer

Increase the number of concurrent users allowed on the server.

Question 15

You have a scatter plot of 'Profit' vs 'Sales'. You want to see the correlation between these measures specifically for the 'Technology' category without removing other categories from the view. What should you do?

Accepted Answer

Add 'Category' to the Color shelf and click on 'Technology' in the legend.. Using a Highlight action allows you to maintain the context of the entire dataset while isolating a specific subset. This is superior to filtering, which would remove the other categories and prevent you from seeing how the Technology category compares to the overall distribution. Highlighting preserves the global perspective while enabling targeted analysis of the segment of interest.

Answer

Filter the Category dimension to include only 'Technology'.

Answer

Create a set of 'Technology' and use it as a measure.

Answer

Create a calculated field that returns the Profit for Technology only.

Question 16

Refer to the exhibit. You are trying to compute a 'Percent of Total' table calculation on an existing aggregate field. Why does this error occur?

Accepted Answer

The field is already an aggregation, and the table calculation needs raw data.. Tableau's calculation engine requires a specific level of granularity to perform table calculations. If a field is already aggregated (like a custom ratio), the table calculation cannot further aggregate it without a defined scope. You must ensure that the calculation is applied to the underlying measures (e.g., SUM(Sales)) rather than a pre-aggregated field, or use the 'Compute Using' settings properly to define the scope.

Answer

The data source connection is live instead of an extract.

Answer

The field is a non-numeric string type.

Answer

The dashboard is using an outdated version of Tableau.

Question 17

When adding a reference line to a visualization, which THREE options can you use to define the line's value? (Select three)

Accepted Answer

A Constant value.. Reference lines provide visual benchmarks, which are essential for comparing current performance against targets or historical averages. By allowing users to see their data in context, reference lines make it easier to identify deviations or performance gaps. They are a foundational tool for creating effective, self-explanatory dashboards that communicate complex business goals quickly and intuitively to a broad audience of stakeholders.

Answer

A custom user-input image file.

Answer

A URL link to an external website.

Question 18

You are creating a map and want to show the distribution of Sales by State. Which geographic role should you assign to the 'State' field to ensure Tableau recognizes it as a map-able entity?

Accepted Answer

State/Province. Geographic roles tell Tableau how to interpret the strings in your data so it can link them to its internal latitude and longitude database. Without this assignment, Tableau will treat the state names as plain text. Correctly assigning these roles is a fundamental step in geospatial analysis, enabling the creation of powerful, intuitive maps that highlight regional performance and spatial trends in business data.

Answer

Country/Region

Answer

City

Answer

Zip Code

Question 19

You have a dashboard with a map and a bar chart. You want the map to filter the bar chart when a user clicks on a region. How is this achieved?

Accepted Answer

Go to Dashboard > Actions > Add Action > Filter.. Dashboard filter actions are a core feature for building interactive, user-driven analysis. They allow analysts to bridge the gap between different chart types, enabling a 'drill-around' experience. By setting a map as a source filter, you enable an intuitive, exploratory interface where users can quickly navigate through spatial data and see the corresponding, detailed performance metrics in an associated chart, increasing the dashboard's overall usability.

Answer

Drag the map sheet onto the bar chart sheet.

Answer

Use the 'Highlight' action instead of a Filter action.

Answer

Create a parameter and use it in a filter calculation.

Question 20

You have a dataset containing 'Order Date' and 'Ship Date'. You want to calculate the 'Lead Time'. What is the correct way to handle dates in this calculation?

Accepted Answer

DATEDIFF('day', [Order Date], [Ship Date]). Date math is a fundamental skill in Tableau. Using the correct functions ensures that you handle time periods accurately, including edge cases like cross-year orders. Understanding these functions allows you to build sophisticated performance metrics, such as lead time, which are critical for supply chain or sales analysis. Proper date handling prevents errors and provides accurate, reliable insights into business processes that rely on temporal efficiency.
