Tableau-Desktop-Found Practice Questions 2 — 50 Questions

Question 1

You are connecting Tableau Desktop to a large transactional database containing millions of rows. You need to improve workbook performance and reduce query load on the live database during exploratory analysis. What is the most effective connection and data storage strategy to achieve this?

Choose an answer to begin — your selection is scored in the full session.

Accepted Answer

Convert the connection to an extract and store the resulting hyper file locally. Creating a Tableau extract compresses the data, stores it locally, and utilizes columnar storage technology, which significantly enhances query performance for large datasets. This approach reduces network latency and frees up transactional database resources. While live connections ensure real-time accuracy, extracts are the industry standard for optimizing desktop performance during complex exploratory analysis sessions involving millions of rows.

Answer

Switch the connection type to Live and apply custom SQL with heavy aggregation

Answer

Maintain a live connection and enable serial execution mode for all queries

Answer

Use an incremental refresh schedule on a live connection without creating an extract

Question 2

A marketing analyst has two data sources: a primary source with campaign spend and a secondary source with website conversions. The sources share a 'Campaign ID' field but are not joined. The analyst wants to display total conversions alongside spend in a single view without blending, because blending has produced null values. Which Tableau feature should the analyst use to bring the conversion metric into the primary source's view?

Accepted Answer

Create a relationship between the two sources in the Data Source page and add the conversion measure to the view.. Relationships provide a logical, non-materialized link between tables or data sources, allowing measures from a secondary source to be aggregated correctly in a view without physically merging rows. Defining the relationship on 'Campaign ID' and adding the conversion measure avoids the nulls that blending can produce when IDs do not align, and it keeps the analysis in a single worksheet.

Answer

Use a cross-database join to physically combine the tables into one extract.

Answer

Create a parameter that maps campaign IDs to conversion values and use it in a calculated field.

Answer

Add a secondary data source and use a data blend, setting 'Campaign ID' as the linking field.

Question 3

A logistics analyst combines shipment records from two tables in a single data source. The Shipments table contains one row per shipment, and the Packages table contains one row per package, with many packages belonging to a single shipment. The analyst relates the two tables on Shipment ID and then builds a view of Total Freight Cost by Carrier. The freight cost column lives only in the Shipments table. Which statement describes what happens to the freight cost values in the resulting view?

Accepted Answer

Freight cost values are preserved because the relationship aggregates shipment-level measures at the shipment level of detail, independent of the package rows.. Relationships keep related tables logically separate and let Tableau determine the level of detail required by the view. Shipment-level measures such as freight cost are aggregated at the shipment grain, so adding package rows does not multiply them. Physical joins, by contrast, can repeat rows and inflate totals.

Answer

Freight cost is summed across all packages in the shipment, producing a value equal to the shipment cost multiplied by the package count.

Answer

The relationship fails to resolve because the two tables are at different levels of detail, so freight cost returns null for every carrier.

Answer

Freight cost is duplicated for each matching package row, so the totals are inflated unless the analyst switches to a many-to-many relationship.

Question 4

A retail analyst studies a data source containing a postal code field that is stored with a numeric data type. When the analyst drags Postal Code onto the Rows shelf, Tableau produces a continuous horizontal axis with values such as 0, 20,000, 40,000, and 60,000 instead of discrete postal code labels. Which concept explains why the postal codes are rendered as an axis rather than as individual headers?

Accepted Answer

The postal code field is numeric, so Tableau treats it as continuous by default, and changing the field to a discrete dimension or converting it to a string will produce individual headers.. Numeric fields default to the continuous role in Tableau, which is why an identifier such as a postal code renders as a numbered axis. Because postal codes are names, not quantities, the analyst should convert the data type to string or explicitly set the field to discrete, at which point each code becomes its own header on the shelf.

Answer

Tableau automatically treats any numeric field as a measure, so the postal code must be converted to a dimension before it can display as discrete values.

Answer

The data source uses an extract, and extracts always materialize numeric fields as continuous axes until the extract is refreshed against the live connection.

Answer

The postal code field is being aggregated, which forces any numeric field onto a continuous axis regardless of its data type or role assignment.

Question 5

A marketing analyst connects Tableau Desktop to a cloud-based CRM and wants every new opportunity record added by the sales team to appear in the workbook when the view is refreshed, without manually rebuilding the data source. Which connection type should the analyst use?

Accepted Answer

A live connection to the CRM. A live connection queries the source system whenever the view is rendered, so records added after the workbook was authored appear without rebuilding the data source. Extract-based approaches, joins to static files, and publishing settings change performance, storage, or governance but do not deliver automatic visibility of newly created records in the same way.

Answer

A cross-database join to a local spreadsheet

Answer

An extract refreshed on a schedule

Answer

A published data source with a stored password

Question 6

A retail analyst is creating a view that shows sales by product category and sub-category. The analyst wants to allow users to drill down from category to sub-category without changing the view structure. Which Tableau feature should the analyst use?

Accepted Answer

Create a hierarchy with Category and Sub-Category, then enable drill-down.. Hierarchies are the built-in Tableau feature for drill-down. By placing Category and Sub-Category in a hierarchy, users can expand and collapse levels directly in the view. This provides an interactive way to explore data without changing the view structure or requiring additional parameters.

Answer

Use a table calculation to compute sales at different levels.

Answer

Use a parameter to switch between Category and Sub-Category.

Answer

Use a set to group categories and sub-categories, then filter.

Question 7

A supply chain analyst creates a scatter plot with 'Shipping Cost' on Columns and 'Order Total' on Rows, then drags 'Ship Mode' onto the Color shelf. She wants each ship mode to be represented by a distinct shape as well as a distinct color, and she wants the shapes to be consistent every time the workbook is opened. What should she do?

Accepted Answer

Drag 'Ship Mode' onto the Shape shelf and assign a specific shape to each member.. The Shape shelf is the Marks card property that assigns a glyph to each member of a dimension. Dragging Ship Mode to Shape and picking a shape per member gives distinct, persistent shapes for every ship mode. Color editing, changing the mark type to Pie, or placing a field on Detail does not control the glyph used for each mark, so those approaches fail the stated goal.

Answer

Create a calculated field that returns a shape name for each ship mode and place it on Detail.

Answer

Change the mark type to Pie and place 'Ship Mode' on the Angle shelf.

Answer

Right-click 'Ship Mode' on the Color shelf and select 'Edit Colors' to assign a shape palette.

Question 8

A sales manager is building a view and wants to show the total sales for each region as a bar chart. The 'Region' field is a dimension and 'Sales' is a measure. After dragging 'Region' to Columns and 'Sales' to Rows, the bar chart appears. The manager then drags 'Category' to Color on the Marks card. What is the effect of adding 'Category' to Color?

Accepted Answer

The bars are split into stacked segments representing each category's sales, and the total bar height remains the sum of all categories for that region.. When a dimension is placed on the Color shelf, Tableau uses it to differentiate marks by color. On a bar chart, this results in stacked bars, where each bar represents the total for the primary dimension and is segmented by the color dimension. The total height remains the sum of all segments, but the breakdown by category is visible through color.

Answer

The bars are grouped side-by-side by category within each region, with each category having its own bar.

Answer

The bars are replaced with a scatter plot showing individual category sales points for each region.

Answer

The bars remain unchanged, but a color legend appears that allows filtering by category.

Question 9

A business analyst has a data source containing a field called 'Shipping Cost' that is currently classified as a measure with a default aggregation of SUM. The analyst wants to display the average shipping cost per order on a view without changing the underlying data source. Which action should the analyst take?

Accepted Answer

Drag 'Shipping Cost' to a shelf, then use the drop-down menu on the pill and select Measure > Average.. The correct approach is to change the aggregation of the measure on the view itself. Right-clicking the pill on a shelf and selecting Measure > Average sets the aggregation for that specific worksheet without modifying the data source's default properties. This preserves the original SUM default for other analyses while allowing the analyst to see average shipping cost per order.

Answer

Change the default aggregation of the 'Shipping Cost' field to Average by right-clicking the field in the Data pane and selecting Default Properties > Aggregation > Average.

Answer

Create a calculated field using the formula AVG([Shipping Cost]) and replace the original field on the shelf with this calculation.

Answer

Right-click the 'Shipping Cost' field in the Data pane and select 'Convert to Dimension', then place it on a shelf and set the aggregation to Average.

Question 10

A marketing analyst wants to display the percentage of total sales contributed by each marketing channel in a pie chart. The data source contains sales amounts per channel. Which Tableau feature should the analyst use to quickly show the percent of total without writing a calculation?

Accepted Answer

Use the 'Quick Table Calculation' option on the Sales measure and select 'Percent of Total'.. The Quick Table Calculation 'Percent of Total' is designed to compute the percentage contribution of each mark to the total. It requires no manual formula and can be applied directly to the Sales measure. This is the most efficient method for the analyst's goal.

Answer

Use the 'Analytics' pane to add a reference line showing the average sales.

Answer

Use a set to group channels and then display the set's percentage.

Answer

Use a calculated field with SUM([Sales]) / TOTAL(SUM([Sales])).

Question 11

A financial analyst builds a view showing Profit Ratio by Sub-Category. To highlight only sub-categories whose Profit Ratio is below zero, the analyst creates a calculated field returning a boolean based on Profit Ratio < 0 and places it on the Color shelf. Which Tableau concept does this calculated field represent when used on Color?

Accepted Answer

A discrete dimension that splits marks into true and false categories. A boolean calculated field acts as a discrete dimension, so placing it on Color separates marks into two labeled groups. Because the expression evaluates Profit Ratio against zero, only sub-categories meeting the condition are colored distinctly. Sets and parameters are related concepts but are separate features, and continuous gradients require a measure rather than a two-value boolean.

Answer

A parameter that the viewer can toggle on the dashboard

Answer

A continuous measure that produces a color gradient

Answer

A set defined by a condition on Profit Ratio

Question 12

A retail analyst is building a dashboard that must show the same sales measure at two different levels of aggregation: total sales per store and total sales per product category, on a single worksheet without blending or joining additional tables. Which two Tableau features allow the measure to be computed at a level of detail independent of the view's dimensions? (Choose two.)

Accepted Answer

A table calculation with a specified addressing and partitioning scope. Level of detail expressions and table calculations both let a measure be evaluated at a granularity that differs from the view's dimensions. FIXED expressions define their own scope inside the calculation, while table calculations operate on returned marks with configurable addressing and partitioning. Parameters, bins, and groups change interactivity or dimension structure but do not independently control aggregation level.

Answer

A parameter used as a filter on the store dimension

Answer

A bin created from the sales measure

Answer

A group combining several product categories

Question 13

A logistics analyst wants to highlight orders whose shipping cost exceeds a fixed threshold of 500. The analyst creates a calculated field returning a Boolean result and drags it onto the Color shelf, but the resulting legend shows only 'True' and 'False' labels with generic colors. The analyst needs a two-color scheme where qualifying orders are red and all others are gray. Which approach best accomplishes this in Tableau Desktop?

Accepted Answer

Right-click the Boolean field on Color and select 'Edit Colors', then assign red to True and gray to False.. Placing a discrete Boolean field on the Color shelf generates a two-member legend. Using 'Edit Colors' on that field allows explicit assignment of red to True and gray to False, giving the exact two-color encoding requested. This keeps all orders visible while visually distinguishing those above the threshold, and it avoids altering the calculation or splitting the analysis across multiple worksheets.

Answer

Drag the Boolean field to the Filters shelf and set it to True, which automatically colors matching marks red.

Answer

Create a separate worksheet for qualifying orders and another for the rest, then place both in a dashboard.

Answer

Convert the Boolean field to a continuous measure, then choose the red-gray diverging palette.

Question 14

A marketing analyst connects Tableau Desktop to a Microsoft Excel workbook containing a single sheet of campaign records. She wants to build several visualizations without repeatedly re-importing the file, and she needs the workbook's data to remain available inside the Tableau workbook even when the original .xlsx file is moved to an archive folder. Which connection type should she use?

Accepted Answer

Extract connection. An extract stores a compressed snapshot of the source data inside the Tableau workbook, so the visualizations keep working after the original Excel file is relocated. A live connection, a cross-database join, or a server refresh schedule all depend on the source file remaining reachable, which the scenario explicitly rules out by archiving the .xlsx.

Answer

Live connection to the Excel workbook

Answer

Cross-database join to the Excel workbook

Answer

Publish the workbook to Tableau Server and rely on scheduled refresh

Question 15

A data analyst is building a view that shows the average shipping cost per order across different ship modes. The data source contains one row per order line item, and orders can have multiple line items. The analyst notices that the average shipping cost is skewed because orders with many line items are overrepresented. Which Tableau feature should the analyst use to calculate the average shipping cost per order correctly?

Accepted Answer

Use a Level of Detail (LOD) expression with FIXED to calculate the average per order, then aggregate.. The FIXED LOD expression computes the average shipping cost at the order level, ignoring the line-item granularity. This ensures each order contributes equally to the final average. Other methods either operate at the wrong level of detail or fail to deduplicate orders, leading to skewed results.

Answer

Use a data blend to join the data source to itself on Order ID, then average the shipping cost.

Answer

Use a regular calculated field with SUM([Shipping Cost]) / COUNT([Order ID]) and set the aggregation to Average.

Answer

Use a table calculation to compute the average shipping cost per order, then filter.

Question 16

A logistics analyst wants to show shipment counts by destination city on a map, but several cities share the same name across different states. The data includes City, State, and Country fields but no latitude or longitude. Which approach best ensures Tableau plots each city correctly?

Accepted Answer

Assign the City field a geographic role and add State and Country to the Detail shelf so Tableau resolves the ambiguity. Tableau geocodes place names automatically when a geographic role is assigned, but ambiguous names require additional geographic context. Adding State and Country to the Detail shelf supplies that context so each city is matched to the correct location. Density marks, measure conversion, and dual axes change visual or aggregation behavior without resolving the underlying geographic ambiguity.

Answer

Change the mark type to Density so overlapping cities are combined into a single shaded region

Answer

Use a dual axis with latitude on one axis and longitude on the other

Answer

Convert the City field to a measure so Tableau treats each value numerically

Question 17

A marketing analyst builds a scatter plot of Ad Spend against Revenue by Region and wants to highlight the relationship between the two measures on the same view. The analyst drops a continuous Profit measure onto the Color shelf. Which statement describes how Tableau renders the marks?

Accepted Answer

Tableau creates a continuous color legend with a gradient, mapping the range of Profit values to a smooth transition between colors.. A continuous measure on the Color shelf generates a continuous color legend with a gradient, shading each mark according to its position in the measure's range. Discrete dimensions on Color produce swatch legends instead, so the distinction between dimension and measure roles drives which legend style appears.

Answer

Tableau ignores the Profit field on the Color shelf because scatter plots can only encode two measures, one on each axis.

Answer

Tableau creates a discrete color legend with one swatch per distinct Profit value, assigning a separate color to each unique profit amount.

Answer

Tableau converts Profit into a dimension automatically so that each region receives a single solid color based on its profit category.

Question 18

A sales operations analyst has a view showing SUM(Sales) by Region. They want to see each region's sales as a percentage of total sales across all regions, displayed as a bar chart where the bars sum to 100 percent. Which Tableau feature should they use?

Accepted Answer

Quick Table Calculation of Percent of Total on SUM(Sales). Percent of Total is a table calculation that expresses each mark as a portion of the total across the addressed scope. Because the analyst wants regional shares that sum to one hundred percent on a bar chart, applying this quick table calculation to SUM(Sales) is the direct approach, while dual axes, manual expressions, and mark changes do not produce the same proportional encoding.

Answer

A calculated field using SUM(Sales) / TOTAL(SUM(Sales))

Answer

Changing the mark type to Pie and using Angle as the size

Answer

A dual axis combining SUM(Sales) and a reference line at the average

Question 19

A sales operations analyst is building a view showing total profit by product category. After dragging 'Category' to the Rows shelf and 'Profit' to the Columns shelf, the analyst notices the mark type has defaulted to a bar chart and that the Profit axis is continuous. The analyst wants to compare discrete categories against a numeric value. Which statement best describes how Tableau is treating these two fields in this view?

Accepted Answer

'Category' is treated as a discrete dimension and 'Profit' is treated as a continuous measure.. Tableau classifies every field by a role and a type. Qualitative text fields such as 'Category' default to discrete dimensions, generating row headers. Quantitative numeric fields such as 'Profit' default to continuous measures, generating an axis and aggregating with SUM. This combination produces the bar chart the analyst observes and is the standard starting point for comparing categories against numeric values.

Answer

Both 'Category' and 'Profit' are treated as continuous fields, so Tableau builds a line chart.

Answer

'Profit' is treated as a dimension, so Tableau aggregates it into a single header row.

Answer

'Category' is treated as a continuous dimension and 'Profit' is treated as a discrete measure.

Question 20

You have a dataset with columns 'Date', 'Region', 'Sales', and 'Profit'. You need to reshape the data so that 'Sales' and 'Profit' are in a single column called 'Measure Name' and their values are in a 'Measure Value' column. Which TWO steps should you take?

Accepted Answer

Select 'Sales' and 'Profit' columns in the Data Source tab.. To convert wide data into long format, use the Pivot function in the Data Source tab. Selecting the columns and applying the pivot operation creates the necessary long-form structure. This is critical for creating charts that compare multiple measures effectively, as it allows Tableau to treat 'Sales' and 'Profit' as values within a single categorical dimension.

Answer

Create a calculated field to join the columns.

Answer

Drag 'Measure Names' to the filter shelf.

Answer

Use the Split function on the 'Date' column.
