Tableau-Desktop-Found Connecting to and Preparing Data Practice Test 2 — 15 Questions

Question 1

Which TWO factors should you consider when deciding whether to use a Relationship or a Join?

Accepted Answer

Whether you need to enforce a specific join type for all visuals.. Choosing the right method for combining tables is vital because it determines how Tableau handles aggregations and data integrity. Relationships are default for most use cases, while joins are reserved for specific, granular control. Understanding these differences prevents common analytical errors like data duplication or missing records, which are often the result of using a physical join when a logical relationship would have been more appropriate.

Answer

The number of rows in the largest table.

Answer

The file format of the source data.

Answer

The color of the data source icon.

Question 2

When connecting to a large flat file in Tableau Desktop, an analyst notices that unused text columns and sensitive employee identification numbers are visible in the Data Source page. What action should the analyst take to secure the data and improve extraction performance?

Accepted Answer

Hide the unused and sensitive fields directly within the Tableau Data Source tab interface.. Hiding unused fields prevents sensitive data from entering the extract file and reduces memory consumption. This optimization step ensures that only necessary columns are loaded into local storage, improving workbook performance and protecting Personally Identifiable Information from unauthorized view access.

Answer

Delete the sensitive columns directly within the original source flat file using a text editor.

Answer

Apply a global data source filter to remove null values from the employee identifier field.

Answer

Create a dashboard action filter that hides the columns whenever a user interacts with the view.

Question 3

An analyst needs to combine two tables from a Microsoft SQL Server database using a Full Outer Join. When inspecting the data grid in the Data Source page, rows from the left table that have no matching keys in the right table display null values for the right table columns. However, the analyst notices that some matching records are failing to join due to subtle trailing spaces in the key fields. What is the most efficient way to resolve this issue in Tableau Desktop before building visualizations?

Accepted Answer

Use the Data Source page menu to select the key field and apply the Trim operation to remove unwanted spaces.. Data cleaning operations like trimming whitespace are critical to ensure accurate joins and prevent data loss. Tableau provides built-in data interpretation and cleaning tools directly within the data source grid, allowing analysts to resolve data quality issues early. Fixing formatting discrepancies at the source level maintains referential integrity and guarantees that aggregations and visual analyses downstream reflect the true underlying relationship between the joined tables.

Answer

Create a custom SQL query to cast all keys as integers to automatically strip whitespace.

Answer

Apply a Data Interpreter step to automatically trim all leading and trailing spaces across the entire database.

Answer

Write a calculated field in the view using the TRIM() function and use it as the join clause.

Question 4

An analyst is preparing a data source that combines an Excel spreadsheet containing regional sales targets with a live enterprise database containing transactional sales. Which TWO actions must the analyst take when establishing a relationship between these two disparate data sources? (Choose two.)

Accepted Answer

Ensure that the matching fields in both the Excel file and the live database share the exact same data type.. Establishing relationships across disparate connectors requires matching data types and appropriately scoping performance options. Tableau uses relationships as a flexible, semantic way to combine data without prematurely aggregating rows, making proper configuration essential for accurate blending and multi-table analysis. Understanding these requirements ensures data integrity and optimal dashboard performance when dealing with mixed live and file-based connections.

Answer

Define a specific aggregation level for the relationship to match the finest granularity of the database.

Answer

Merge the Excel file and the database into a single physical table using custom SQL before creating relationships.

Answer

Set up a cross-database join instead of a relationship to ensure row-level security filters apply to both sources.

Question 5

When connecting to a JSON file, which TWO of the following are true about the schema discovery process in Tableau?

Accepted Answer

Tableau requires you to define the schema level for nested objects.. Tableau uses a schema discovery process to infer the structure of a JSON file. It looks for the first level of keys to suggest a schema. However, since JSON is hierarchical, Tableau often requires the user to flatten nested elements. Understanding this process is vital for successful data ingestion, as improperly mapped schemas result in missing fields or incorrectly structured data tables.

Answer

Tableau automatically scans the entire file to determine the schema.

Answer

The schema discovery process is only supported for local files.

Answer

JSON files cannot be combined with other data types.

Question 6

You are preparing a data source and need to ensure high performance and data accuracy. Which TWO of the following practices should you prioritize?

Accepted Answer

Hide unused columns in the Data Source tab.. Optimizing data preparation involves minimizing data volume and ensuring clean connections. Removing unnecessary columns prevents Tableau from processing redundant information, and using extracts ensures that the data engine is local and optimized for the specific queries being run. These two steps are the most critical practices for maintaining a performant and responsive dashboard environment while simultaneously ensuring the underlying data remains manageable and clean.

Answer

Import all columns from the database regardless of need.

Answer

Always connect to the production database directly.

Answer

Use live connections for all data sources.

Question 7

When connecting to a flat file, you notice that Tableau is interpreting a 'Date' column as a String. Which action should you take to ensure the field is recognized correctly for time-series analysis?

Accepted Answer

Click the data type icon in the Data Source tab and change it to Date. Changing the data type is a fundamental step in data preparation. Tableau's ability to create hierarchies and perform date-part aggregations relies on the field being recognized as a date. If the data type remains a string, you lose the ability to use continuous date axes or drill-down functionality, which are essential for visualizing trends over time and performing accurate year-over-year or month-over-month comparisons.

Answer

Create a calculated field using the DATE() function

Answer

Split the column into Year, Month, and Day segments

Answer

Filter the data to remove non-date entries

Question 8

You are preparing a data source and need to pivot multiple columns representing 'Month' into a single column. What is the primary requirement for this action?

Accepted Answer

The columns must have the same data type. Pivoting is essential for reshaping wide data into tall data, which Tableau prefers for visualization. Ensuring data types are consistent is the most critical constraint because the new field generated by the pivot must hold values from all participating columns uniformly. Mastering this process is vital for converting Excel-style cross-tab data into a format that allows for flexible analysis, filtering, and aggregation in Tableau.

Answer

The columns must be adjacent in the data source

Answer

The data must be in a live connection

Answer

The columns must contain only numeric values

Question 9

Refer to the exhibit. You are attempting to join several tables in a physical layer and receive the error shown. What is the most likely cause?

Accepted Answer

You have joined tables in a way that creates an infinite loop. A circular dependency occurs when tables are linked in a way that creates an infinite loop or a closed path of joins. In the physical layer, Tableau requires a linear or hierarchical structure. This error is common when users create complex join paths that don't follow a logical, tree-like hierarchy, and resolving it requires simplifying the join structure or using relationships instead of physical joins.

Answer

The data files are too large for the extract engine

Answer

The primary keys are missing from all tables

Answer

The join condition involves incompatible data types

Question 10

You have a dataset containing sales information for different years. You want to connect to this data but only need to keep records from the last two years. Which approach is the most efficient?

Accepted Answer

Use a Data Source filter to exclude older years. Data source filters allow you to limit the data loaded into the Tableau environment at the connection level. By applying a filter before the data is ingested, you reduce the size of the extract or the volume of data queried live. This improves performance, reduces memory usage, and ensures that the workbook only processes the records relevant to the current analytical scope.

Answer

Use a hide field command on the Year column

Answer

Create a worksheet-level filter for every view

Answer

Delete the old data from the source file

Question 11

What is the purpose of the 'Data Interpreter' in the Tableau Data Source tab?

Accepted Answer

To identify and clean formatting issues in spreadsheets. The Data Interpreter is an automated cleanup tool for Excel, CSV, or Google Sheets files that have headers starting on non-first rows, nested tables, or empty cells. It simplifies the preparation process by detecting these common formatting issues and automatically promoting the correct headers and cleaning up the structure, saving time and reducing errors for users dealing with messy, non-standardized spreadsheet data.

Answer

To translate between different database dialects

Answer

To perform statistical analysis on the data

Answer

To automatically join tables based on column names

Question 12

Which TWO of the following are valid ways to combine data from different sources in Tableau?

Accepted Answer

Blending. Understanding how to integrate data is fundamental to Tableau. Blending and Relationships are the primary methods for combining data from multiple sources. Choosing the right one depends on the nature of the data, the desired level of granularity, and performance requirements. Relationships are generally preferred for their flexibility and intelligence, while blending serves as a useful secondary tool for quick, high-level analysis when more complex modeling is not feasible.

Answer

Data Mining

Answer

Data Sorting

Answer

Extracting

Question 13

Refer to the exhibit. You are trying to establish a relationship between two tables, but receive this error. What is the best way to fix this?

Accepted Answer

Use a calculation to cast both fields to the same type. Tableau's relationship engine requires consistent data types for the related fields. If one is an integer and the other is a string, the engine cannot establish a valid relationship. This is a common issue when pulling data from disparate systems. The solution is to create a calculated field to cast the data to a matching type, ensuring logical consistency for the underlying query engine to execute successfully.

Answer

Change the database schema of the original source

Answer

Delete the Relationship and use a join instead

Answer

Restart the Tableau instance

Question 14

You have a large CSV file with millions of rows. You want to keep the data updated every morning. What is the best strategy?

Accepted Answer

Create an extract and schedule an incremental refresh. Scheduled refreshes for extracts are the standard way to maintain data freshness for large files. By creating an extract, you optimize performance. By publishing it to Tableau Server or Cloud, you can leverage automated refresh tasks. This ensures that users always have the latest data without needing to manually refresh the file, balancing performance requirements with the need for timely, up-to-date business intelligence.

Answer

Use a live connection to the CSV

Answer

Manually refresh the extract every morning

Answer

Convert the CSV into a JSON file

Question 15

You are connecting to a large Excel file with 20 sheets. You need to combine data from three sheets that share the same structure into a single table. Which method is most efficient for data preparation?

Accepted Answer

Use the Union feature to append the sheets.. The Union feature in Tableau is designed specifically to append data from multiple tables with identical structures into a single, longer table. This is the standard approach for normalized data stored across multiple tabs. Using relationships or joins would create unnecessary complexity or data duplication, whereas unions preserve the integrity of the original structure while providing a singular set of rows for downstream analysis in your worksheets.

Answer

Create a cross-database join on all three sheets.

Answer

Use the Data Interpreter to automatically merge the sheets.

Answer

Create a relationship between the three sheets.
