Tableau-Desktop-Found Practice Test 9 — 10 Questions

Question 1

Refer to the exhibit. How can you change the visualization to show the relative contribution of each region instead of raw Sales totals?

Accepted Answer

Use a Quick Table Calculation: Percent of Total. Using Table Calculations like 'Percent of Total' transforms raw values into proportions, which are often more insightful for comparing relative performance across regions. This shifts the focus from magnitude to contribution, allowing for better identification of dominant or underperforming areas within the data. This is a common requirement in geographic analysis where absolute numbers can obscure the regional share of the business.

Answer

Create a parameter to divide by total sales

Answer

Filter out the top performing regions

Answer

Use the 'Running Total' calculation

Question 2

You are analyzing sales data and want to identify outliers in profit margins across various regions. Which visualization type is most effective for highlighting these statistical anomalies while maintaining the ability to see the distribution of data points?

Accepted Answer

Box-and-whisker plot. A box-and-whisker plot is the industry standard for identifying outliers. By visualizing the distribution of data through quartiles, it clearly displays points that fall outside the whiskers, indicating statistical anomalies. This helps analysts move beyond simple averages to understand data spread and variability. Mastering this visualization is crucial for quality control, financial auditing, and performance monitoring scenarios in Tableau.

Answer

Packed Bubble chart

Answer

Stacked Bar chart

Answer

Highlight Table

Question 3

When is it appropriate to use a 'Discrete' date field rather than a 'Continuous' date field in a visualization?

Accepted Answer

When you want to compare specific months across different years. Discrete dates create individual headers, while continuous dates create a timeline axis. This is a fundamental concept in how Tableau structures charts. Choosing the wrong type often leads to 'all dates showing' or confusing gaps in data. Mastering this allows developers to create custom views like yearly trends, monthly aggregations, or specific time-period comparisons that align with business fiscal calendars.

Answer

When you want to plot data over time

Answer

When you want to show a moving average

Answer

When you want to avoid missing data points

Question 4

Which Tableau feature should be used to display a metric from a secondary data source that is not joined to the primary source?

Accepted Answer

Data Blending. When working with multiple data sources, sometimes data cannot be physically joined. Understanding when to use Data Blending vs. Relationships is key. Blending allows for 'left join-like' behavior on aggregate values from different sources without a physical merge. This is vital for analysts combining disparate KPIs, such as comparing CRM sales data with third-party marketing spend metrics.

Answer

Data Interpreter

Answer

Physical Join

Answer

Cross-Database Union

Question 5

You are creating a data source that combines a large Sales table with a smaller Regions mapping table. You want to ensure that only rows from the Sales table that have a corresponding match in the Regions table are kept. Which join type should you use?

Accepted Answer

Inner Join. An inner join is the appropriate choice when you only want to return records that have matching values in both tables. This filtering behavior is essential for cleaning data where incomplete or unmatched records could skew performance metrics or create null values that interfere with visualization aggregations, ensuring the dataset remains focused only on valid, mapped geographic regions.

Answer

Left Join

Answer

Right Join

Answer

Full Outer Join

Question 6

You are using a dual-axis chart to compare sales and profit. You notice that the two axes are not synchronized, making the comparison misleading. What is the correct way to fix this?

Accepted Answer

Right-click the secondary axis and select 'Synchronize Axis'.. Synchronizing axes is a critical step when using a dual-axis chart for comparison. If the axes have different scales, the visual representation of the trends will be distorted, leading to incorrect conclusions. By right-clicking the secondary axis and selecting 'Synchronize Axis', Tableau forces both axes to use the same scale, ensuring that the visual height of the marks accurately represents the underlying relationship between the two measures.

Answer

Change the measure to a dimension.

Answer

Increase the font size of the axis labels.

Answer

Drag the measures to the same Row shelf.

Question 7

When connecting to an Excel file with multiple sheets, you need to combine the data into a single table structure using the Data Source tab. Which feature allows you to stack these sheets vertically if they share the same column headers?

Accepted Answer

Union. The Union feature in Tableau is designed specifically to combine tables with the same structure by appending rows from one table to the bottom of another. This is critical for users who receive periodic extracts—such as monthly sales reports—that need to be analyzed as a single continuous time series without manually merging files in Excel before connecting to Tableau.

Answer

Data Blending

Question 8

When you have a measure on the color shelf, how can you change the center point of the diverging color palette?

Accepted Answer

Use the 'Edit Colors' dialog and check the 'Center' box to define a custom value.. Adjusting the center point of a diverging palette allows for a clearer distinction between positive and negative performance, or performance relative to a target. By manually setting the 'Center' value in the Edit Colors dialog, analysts can ensure that '0' or a specific KPI benchmark is clearly defined, preventing misleading visual interpretations and ensuring that the color intensity accurately reflects the delta from the chosen reference point.

Answer

Drag the measure to the Columns shelf and set the axis range.

Answer

Apply a filter to the measure to remove values below the desired center.

Answer

Create a calculated field that subtracts the center value from the measure.

Question 9

You are connecting to a large database and only need a small subset of the data based on a specific geographic region. How can you limit the amount of data brought into Tableau?

Accepted Answer

Use a Data Source Filter.. Using a Data Source Filter allows you to restrict the data at the connection level, meaning only the relevant subset is loaded into Tableau's memory. This is a critical performance optimization technique, as it prevents the unnecessary processing of large volumes of irrelevant data, resulting in faster dashboard load times and a more streamlined user experience for regional-specific reporting tasks.

Answer

Use a Context Filter.

Answer

Use a Global Filter.

Answer

Use a Hide field option.

Question 10

Which Tableau feature enables you to combine multiple worksheets into a single interactive display, where filtering one worksheet affects the others?

Accepted Answer

Dashboard. Dashboards are the core container for interactive analysis in Tableau. By integrating multiple worksheets and leveraging filter actions, you create a cohesive user experience where users can explore data across different dimensions. This functionality is essential for business reporting, as it transforms static charts into a dynamic, narrative-driven interface that allows for deep exploration of complex business metrics.
