SERVICENOW-CIS-DISCOVERY Practice Test 3 — 25 Questions

Question 1

Which THREE components are involved in the Discovery process flow?

Accepted Answer

Discovery Patterns. Discovery utilizes the MID Server for execution, the ECC queue for communication, and Patterns for data collection.

Answer

Service Mapping

Answer

CI Class Manager

Question 2

Which action must you perform before a pattern can be used in Discovery?

Accepted Answer

Publish the pattern.. Patterns must be published to be active in the production environment.

Answer

Run a full scan.

Answer

Add it to an Update Set.

Answer

Clear the MID Server cache.

Question 3

What does the 'Discovery Status' field 'Completed' mean?

Accepted Answer

The discovery process has finished executing.. It indicates that all phases of the discovery process for that specific status record have finished.

Answer

No errors occurred.

Answer

The CMDB is now up-to-date.

Answer

All devices were successfully updated.

Question 4

When configuring a Discovery Schedule, what happens if the 'Active' checkbox is unchecked?

Accepted Answer

It does not run. An inactive Discovery Schedule will not run, regardless of the schedule definition or the defined Discovery range.

Answer

It remains in the queue

Answer

It runs only once

Answer

It ignores the IP ranges

Question 5

What is the result of using a 'Delimiter' of '
' in a 'Parse Delimited' step?

Accepted Answer

It splits the text into separate lines (rows).. The '
' (newline) delimiter splits the text into separate rows.

Answer

It splits the text into individual characters.

Answer

It removes all spaces.

Answer

It converts the text to JSON.

Question 6

What is the primary role of the MID Server during pattern execution?

Accepted Answer

To execute the pattern commands on the target.. The MID Server executes the commands on the target on behalf of the instance.

Answer

To define pattern logic.

Answer

To store the CMDB.

Answer

To design the pattern.

Question 7

Which TWO of the following are valid ways to debug a pattern?

Accepted Answer

Review the 'Pattern Log' in the Discovery Status. Option B is correct because the 'Pattern Log' in the Discovery Status provides the execution trace and error details generated when a pattern runs during discovery, making it the primary place to inspect what a pattern actually did and where it failed. Option D is correct because the 'Test' mode in the Pattern Designer lets you execute a pattern against a specific CI or host in a controlled, interactive environment, showing step-by-step results and allowing iterative debugging without running a full discovery. The other options do not belong: restarting the instance (A) is a generic troubleshooting action that does not expose pattern logic or execution details, modifying the MID Server source code (C) is unsupported and unrelated to pattern debugging, and running the pattern from the command line (E) is not a valid debugging method for patterns in this platform.

Answer

Restart the instance

Answer

Modify the MID Server source code

Answer

Run the pattern from the command line

Question 8

What happens to the ECC Queue if the MID Server is unable to connect to the ServiceNow instance?

Accepted Answer

The records stay in the 'ready' state until the MID Server reconnects.. If the MID is down, the ECC Queue records remain in the 'ready' state on the instance and wait until the MID reconnects to process them.

Answer

The instance marks the records as 'processed'.

Answer

The records are automatically moved to the error state.

Answer

The records are automatically deleted.

Question 9

Which TWO types of discovery probes can a MID Server execute?

Accepted Answer

WMI probes. A MID Server in ServiceNow Discovery can execute WMI probes, which use Windows Management Instrumentation over DCOM/RPC to collect hardware, software, and configuration data from Windows hosts, making option A correct. It can also execute SSH probes, which connect to Linux/Unix and network devices over TCP port 22 to run commands and gather inventory data, making option E correct. Hardware replacement probes (B) are not a Discovery probe category—Discovery identifies and classifies CIs but does not perform hardware replacement actions. User creation probes (C) are likewise not a Discovery probe type; user provisioning is handled by orchestration/fulfillment workflows, not Discovery. SQL injection probes (D) are attack techniques, not legitimate Discovery probes, and have no place in the MID Server probe library.

Answer

Hardware replacement probes

Answer

User creation probes

Answer

SQL injection probes

Question 10

You are creating a pattern to capture a version number from a command line output. The output is 'Version: 1.2.3.4'. Which parsing strategy is most efficient for this specific string?

Accepted Answer

Regex parsing. Regex is the standard tool for extracting specific patterns from a single line of text.

Answer

Name-Value pair parsing

Answer

Delimiter parsing

Answer

XML parsing

Question 11

You are implementing a new discovery tool and want to ensure it integrates seamlessly with existing CMDB identification rules. What is the first step?

Accepted Answer

Review existing Identification Rules to ensure they support the new tool's incoming CI data.. The first step is to review existing Identification Rules to ensure they support the new tool's incoming CI data. Identification Rules determine how discovered CIs are matched to existing records in the CMDB, so any new discovery tool must produce data that aligns with these rules (e.g., matching on serial number, MAC address, or name). Without this review, the new tool could create duplicate CIs or fail to update existing ones, breaking CMDB integrity.

Answer

Delete all existing CIs.

Answer

Disable all existing identification rules.

Answer

Use a new CI class for all data from the new tool.

Question 12

What is the purpose of the 'MID Server User' assigned to a MID Server record?

Accepted Answer

To authenticate the MID Server to the ServiceNow instance. The MID Server user is the account the MID Server service uses to authenticate with the ServiceNow instance to pull and push ECC Queue records.

Answer

To perform Discovery scans on target devices

Answer

To access the MID Server's local configuration files

Answer

To log in to the MID Server host via SSH

Question 13

Which THREE pieces of information are required for a MID Server to communicate with the ServiceNow instance?

Accepted Answer

Instance URL. Option B (Instance URL) is required because the MID Server's config.xml must point to the ServiceNow instance endpoint (e.g., https://<instance>.service-now.com) so it knows where to establish its outbound connection. Option C (MID Server record validation) is required because the MID Server must be registered as a MID Server record in the instance and validate itself against that record (name/user/password) before it is authorized to pull and execute jobs. Option E (Network connectivity to the instance) is required because the MID Server initiates outbound HTTPS (port 443) connections to the instance; without reachable network/DNS/firewall paths, no communication can occur. Option A (Admin password for the host) is not required, since the MID Server runs as a service under a local service account and does not need host admin credentials for instance communication. Option D (Database credentials) is not required, because the MID Server never connects directly to the ServiceNow database; all interaction occurs through the instance's REST/SOAP APIs.

Answer

Admin password for the host

Answer

Database credentials

Question 14

Which TWO of the following actions help reduce 'Staleness' in the CMDB?

Accepted Answer

Ensuring all target devices are covered by a discovery schedule.. Staleness is reduced by ensuring scans run frequently enough and that every CI is targeted by a discovery scan.

Answer

Reducing the number of attributes collected.

Answer

Hardcoding CI attributes manually.

Answer

Adding more classes to the dashboard.

Question 15

What is the purpose of the 'MID Server Validation' process?

Accepted Answer

To provide a security handshake between the instance and the MID Server. Validation ensures that the MID Server is trusted by the instance and authorized to execute commands.

Answer

To check for the latest software version

Answer

To verify the network speed to the instance

Answer

To confirm the MID Server has enough RAM

Question 16

What happens if a pattern execution encounters an error in a step that is marked as 'Continue on error'?

Accepted Answer

The pattern proceeds to the next step in the sequence.. The 'Continue on error' flag allows the discovery to proceed to the next step despite failure.

Answer

The error is logged, and the pattern restarts.

Answer

The entire pattern execution stops.

Answer

The pattern skips to the next section.

Question 17

Which TWO actions can be triggered from the MID Server record's related links?

Accepted Answer

Restart the MID server. Option C (Restart the MID server) is correct because the MID Server record's related links include a Restart action that lets an administrator remotely restart the MID Server service on its host, which is essential for applying configuration changes or recovering a stuck MID Server. Option E (Validate the MID server) is correct because the related links also provide a Validate action that runs a diagnostic check against the MID Server to confirm connectivity, credentials, and capability status with the ServiceNow instance. Option A (Upgrade the database) is not a MID Server related link, as database upgrades are handled through instance upgrade processes, not from a MID Server record. Option B (View the CMDB records) is not a MID Server related link; CMDB data is accessed through CMDB modules and CI records, not the MID Server record's related links. Option D (Delete the instance) is not a MID Server related link, since deleting an instance is an administrative action performed from the instance management console, not from a MID Server record.

Answer

Upgrade the database

Answer

View the CMDB records

Answer

Delete the instance

Question 18

Which TWO of the following are true about Discovery Credentials?

Accepted Answer

They are referenced via Credential Aliases. They are stored securely and associated with aliases for use in schedules.

Answer

They are not required for Discovery

Answer

They are stored in the MID Server locally

Answer

They are passed as plain text in the ECC queue

Question 19

Which tool provides a visual representation of how different data sources are contributing to the current state of a CI record?

Accepted Answer

CI Timeline. The CI Timeline or the 'CMDB Data Manager' visual tools allow viewing update history and sources.

Answer

Discovery Log

Answer

CMDB Health Dashboard

Answer

Service Map

Question 20

A pattern is failing to map a specific attribute because the command used returns multi-line output. What is the standard way to handle this in a Discovery Pattern?

Accepted Answer

Use a 'Parse' step with a Regular Expression (Regex) to extract the specific value.. Patterns use parsing steps (like Regex or Split) to convert multi-line output into structured attribute data.

Answer

Use a MID Server script file to process the output.

Answer

Ignore the attribute.

Answer

Change the command to only return a single line.
