SNOW-CAD Designing interfaces and user experiences — 25 Questions

Question 1

A developer needs to create a field on the Incident form that shows a red background when the priority is 'Critical'. Which feature should be used?

Accepted Answer

UI Policy. UI Policy is the correct choice because it allows you to set a field's background color conditionally on the client side without a round trip to the server. In this case, you can create a UI Policy that triggers when the Priority field equals 'Critical' and use the 'Style' property to apply a red background to the Incident form field. This approach is efficient and directly meets the requirement for a visual indicator based on a field value.

Answer

Business Rule

Answer

Access Control (ACL)

Answer

Client Script

Question 2

A Service Portal widget displays a list of catalog items. Each catalog item should link to a record producer that opens in a modal dialog. Which approach should the developer use to open the modal?

Accepted Answer

Use $uibModal.open to create a modal with a custom template. Service Portal widgets use AngularJS, and the standard way to open a modal with a custom template (such as a record producer form) is via `$uibModal.open`. This method allows the developer to specify a controller, template, and resolve data, giving full control over the modal's behavior and content. Record producers are typically rendered inside a custom template, not directly via a sys_id parameter.

Answer

Use $scope.$broadcast to trigger a modal event

Answer

Use spModal.open with the record producer sys_id

Answer

Use window.open to open the record producer URL

Question 3

Which three elements are required to create a Service Portal widget that displays data from a table?

Accepted Answer

An HTML template. In ServiceNow Service Portal, a widget is composed of several fields, and the three required to display table data are the HTML template (B), the server script (C), and the client controller (E). The HTML template (B) defines the widget's markup and is where the data is rendered to the user, making it essential for displaying any table data. The server script (C) runs on the server and is where you query the table (e.g., using GlideRecord) to retrieve the records that will be displayed. The client controller (E) is the AngularJS controller that handles client-side logic and binds the server data to the HTML template, enabling dynamic display of the table data. A widget dependency (A) is optional and only needed when the widget relies on another widget or AngularJS module, and a CSS stylesheet (D) is optional for styling and not required for data display.

Answer

A widget dependency

Answer

A CSS stylesheet

Question 4

A large enterprise is implementing a Service Portal for employees to request IT equipment. The portal must be accessible globally, with users in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The development team has created a custom widget that displays the user's local time based on their location. The widget uses a server script that calls a third-party geolocation API to determine the user's timezone based on their IP address. However, during peak hours, the widget takes over 10 seconds to load, causing poor user experience. The team also notices that the same timezone is fetched repeatedly for the same user across different sessions. The portal uses a CDN for static assets. Which approach should the developer take to reduce the load time while maintaining accuracy?

Accepted Answer

Cache the timezone result in a user preference or session storage after the first request. Caching the timezone result in a user preference or session storage eliminates redundant API calls for the same user across sessions. This directly reduces load time by avoiding the 10-second geolocation API call on subsequent requests, while maintaining accuracy since the user's IP-based timezone is unlikely to change frequently. In ServiceNow, storing this data in a user preference (e.g., `sys_user_preference`) or session storage ensures persistence without repeated server-side processing.

Answer

Implement asynchronous loading of the widget so the page loads without waiting for the timezone

Answer

Use client-side JavaScript to detect the timezone from the browser's Intl API instead of server-side API call

Answer

Move the geolocation API call to a business rule that runs once per user

Question 5

A ServiceNow administrator is designing a new catalog item for hardware requests. The item should allow users to select a cost center from a list of available options, but only those cost centers the user is authorized to use. Which TWO approaches should the administrator use to implement this requirement?

Accepted Answer

Create a reference field on the Cost Center table and apply a reference qualifier that filters based on the user's authorization.. Option C is correct because a Reference variable pointing to the Cost Center table with a reference qualifier (e.g., using a dynamic filter like 'sys_idINjavascript:...' or a related-list qualifier based on the user's authorization) restricts the records a user can select to only those cost centers they are authorized to use. Option E is correct because a List Collector variable also supports a reference qualifier on the Cost Center table, so the slushbucket of available options is filtered to authorized cost centers only. Option A is not appropriate because a reference qualifier cannot reliably depend on a local variable populated by a catalog client script, since client scripts run in the browser and reference qualifiers are evaluated server-side, making that pattern unreliable. Option B is not ideal because a Select Box populated by a script does not natively support reference qualifiers and requires custom scripting to enforce authorization, which is less maintainable than a reference qualifier. Option D is not correct because a Lookup Select Box uses a script to return options and does not leverage the standard reference qualifier mechanism, so it does not meet the requirement as cleanly as the reference-qualifier-based approaches.

Answer

Define a variable with a reference qualifier using a local variable that is populated by a catalog client script.

Answer

Use a 'Select Box' variable type and populate it via a script that queries the cost center table filtering by user.

Answer

Use a 'Lookup Select Box' variable type and set the option list to a script that returns authorized cost centers.

Question 6

A large enterprise is deploying ServiceNow for IT Service Management. The UX team has designed a new portal for end users to request services. The portal should have a modern, responsive design with custom branding. The development team decides to use Service Portal with AngularJS widgets. After initial deployment, the portal loads slowly and some widgets display a blank page. Analysis shows that the widget server scripts are making multiple synchronous GlideRecord queries to the same table, and the client scripts are not handling asynchronous data loading properly. The team needs to optimize the portal performance and fix the blank page issue. Which course of action should the team take?

Accepted Answer

Refactor the server scripts to use GlideAggregate for aggregated queries, and ensure the client controller uses $scope.$on to wait for data before rendering.. The performance issue stems from multiple synchronous GlideRecord queries in server scripts, which block the widget rendering. Refactoring to GlideAggregate reduces database round-trips by performing aggregated queries, and using $scope.$on in the AngularJS client controller ensures the view waits for asynchronous data before rendering, fixing the blank page issue.

Answer

Convert all widgets to use Jelly templates instead of AngularJS to reduce client-side complexity.

Answer

Replace the Service Portal with a custom UI Page and UI Macro based portal for better performance.

Answer

Enable server-side caching for the widget server scripts and increase the cache size.

Question 7

Match each ServiceNow notification type to its trigger.

Accepted Answer

Email Notification: Triggered when a record is inserted or updated. Email and SMS notifications are triggered by record events like insert, update, or state change. Scheduled jobs and record deletions are not typical triggers for these notification types.

Answer

Email Notification: Triggered by a scheduled job

Answer

Voice Notification: Triggered by a record being deleted

Question 8

A company wants to display a list of open incidents on a Service Portal page. Which component should be used?

Accepted Answer

Data Table Widget. The Data Table Widget is the standard component for displaying lists of records in Service Portal, making option B correct. Option A (Map Widget) is used for geospatial data. Option C (Performance Analytics widget) is for analytics dashboards. Option D (List View Widget) is designed for the backend UI, not for portals.

Answer

Map widget

Answer

Performance Analytics widget

Answer

List View Widget

Question 9

Which method is recommended for applying custom CSS to a Service Portal page?

Accepted Answer

Use the CSS Variable Editor in UI Builder. The recommended method for applying custom CSS to a Service Portal page is to use the CSS Variable Editor in UI Builder. This tool allows administrators to override default Bootstrap variables and add custom CSS without modifying core files. It ensures that customizations are preserved during upgrades and are scoped to the portal.

Answer

Modify the Bootstrap CSS file directly

Answer

Add inline styles in the page template

Answer

Override CSS in each widget's instance options

Question 10

A developer wants to create a responsive portal page that displays data in a two-column layout on desktop and a single column on mobile. Which approach should be used?

Accepted Answer

Use the Bootstrap grid with col-lg-6 and col-md-12 classes. Bootstrap's grid system with col-lg-6 and col-md-12 classes provides a responsive two-column to single-column transition. Column widgets are not for responsive layout.

Answer

Use a single-column layout with media queries

Answer

Use the Column widget in UI Builder

Answer

Use fixed-width tables

Question 11

A widget's server script retrieves data from the 'incident' table using GlideRecord. A user with 'itil' role can see some incidents in the backend but the widget shows no data. What could be the reason?

Accepted Answer

The portal page has a visibility condition that excludes the user. Widget server scripts respect ACLs. If the widget is assigned to a portal that does not have the correct user criteria, or if the user's portal roles differ from backend roles, the data may not be visible.

Answer

The GlideRecord query does not include the user's assignment group filter

Answer

The widget is using client-side REST API instead of server-side

Answer

The widget's server script is not returning data because of a syntax error

Question 12

Which THREE best practices should be followed when designing a custom widget in Service Portal? (Choose three.)

Accepted Answer

Implement client-side validation. Option A is correct because implementing client-side validation in a custom widget improves the user experience by catching invalid input before it reaches the server, reducing unnecessary round trips and providing immediate feedback via AngularJS form directives such as ng-required and ng-pattern. Option B is correct because avoiding hard-coded strings and instead using message keys with the i18n framework (e.g., ${} substitution or gs.getMessage) ensures the widget supports internationalization and is maintainable across languages. Option D is correct because the spUtil service is the recommended Service Portal client-side utility for making server calls (via spUtil.get or recordWatch) and accessing portal data, rather than relying on raw GlideAjax or custom AJAX code. Option C is incorrect because synchronous AJAX calls block the browser's main thread and degrade performance; Service Portal best practice is to use asynchronous calls. Option E is incorrect because using global variables to share data between widgets creates tight coupling and unpredictable state; Service Portal recommends using widget options, the spUtil service, or client data services for inter-widget communication.

Answer

Use synchronous AJAX calls

Answer

Use global variables to share data between widgets

Question 13

Which TWO approaches are valid for applying custom theming to Service Portal? (Choose two.)

Accepted Answer

Applying a custom LESS file via Theme and Branding. Option A is correct because Service Portal's Theme and Branding feature allows you to attach a custom LESS file, which is compiled server-side and injected into the portal's CSS, making it a supported way to apply custom theming. Option E is correct because the Theme and Branding module itself is the designated Service Portal interface for defining themes, including colors, fonts, and CSS variables that drive the portal's look and feel. Option B is not valid because widget instance options configure widget behavior and data, not global CSS theming. Option C is not valid because directly modifying Bootstrap CSS is unsupported and would be overwritten on upgrade. Option D is not valid because the CSS Variable Editor in UI Builder applies to Next Experience/UI Builder pages, not Service Portal theming.

Answer

Overwriting widget CSS via widget instance options

Answer

Modifying the Bootstrap CSS directly

Answer

Using the CSS Variable Editor in UI Builder

Question 14

Refer to the exhibit. The developer expects a list of incidents in the widget, but the page renders with an error. What is the most likely cause?

Accepted Answer

getRow() is not a valid method on GlideRecord. The error occurs because getRow() is not a valid method on GlideRecord. The correct method to access field values from a GlideRecord object is getValue(). Option A is not the most likely cause because server scripts do not require an explicit return statement; the data structure is implicitly returned. Option C is a logic issue, not a syntax error. Option D is incorrect because the data.items array is correctly initialized with new Array() or [] and then pushed in the loop.

Answer

The server script is missing a return statement

Answer

The query does not filter for active incidents

Answer

The data.items array is not initialized correctly

Question 15

Refer to the exhibit. A developer creates this UI Builder component but the header does not display the custom title. What is the most likely cause?

Accepted Answer

The section id is missing from the template. In ServiceNow UI Builder, a custom component's header title is bound to a specific section ID defined in the component's template. The exhibit shows the header configuration referencing a section ID that does not exist in the template, so the title cannot render. The section ID must match exactly between the template and the header property for the custom title to display.

Answer

The field default is not applied unless the state is set

Answer

The states array is empty of conditions

Answer

The component name is not correctly registered

Question 16

Refer to the exhibit. What security risk is present in this implementation?

Accepted Answer

The data is not subject to the same ACLs as server-side calls. Using client-side $http calls bypasses the server-side ACL evaluation that occurs when using spUtil or server scripts. Client-side REST API calls still respect ACLs based on the user's session, but they may expose sensitive data that goes through different security checks. However, a more critical risk is that the endpoint might be susceptible to CSRF if not protected. In the context of Service Portal, the recommended approach is to use spUtil.get or a server script to ensure proper data access control. Option D highlights the risk of inconsistent ACL enforcement.

Answer

The request exposes internal API credentials

Answer

The endpoint does not require authentication

Answer

The client exposes the widget to XSS attacks

Question 17

A company needs to allow employees to request a new laptop through a catalog item. The form should only show a 'Configuration' section if the user selects 'Yes' for 'Custom Configuration?'. Which design approach best accomplishes this?

Accepted Answer

Use a UI Policy to show/hide the section based on the field value.. A UI Policy is the correct approach because it is specifically designed to dynamically show/hide form sections, fields, or make them mandatory/read-only based on the value of another field. In ServiceNow, UI Policies run on the client side and can be configured declaratively without writing code, making them ideal for conditional section visibility on catalog items. The condition 'Custom Configuration? = Yes' triggers the UI Policy to show the 'Configuration' section only when that condition is met, and hide it otherwise.

Answer

Use a client script to hide the section when the field changes.

Answer

Use an ACL to restrict access to the section.

Answer

Use a catalog client script to set the visibility.

Question 18

A flow designer wants to send an email notification with a custom logo. They need to ensure the email template references the correct image. What is the best practice?

Accepted Answer

Attach the image to the sys_attachment table and use the sys_id in the template.. The best practice is to attach the image to the sys_attachment table and reference its sys_id in the email template. This ensures the image is stored within the instance, is available to all users, and avoids external dependencies. The email template can then use the attachment sys_id to embed the image via a URL like /sys_attachment.do?sys_id=...

Answer

Reference the image from an external CDN using a URL.

Answer

Upload the image directly into the email template using base64 encoding.

Answer

Store the image in the 'images' table and use the image name.

Question 19

A developer is creating a service portal widget that shows a list of active incidents. The data should be refreshed every 30 seconds. What is the recommended design pattern?

Accepted Answer

Use a widget option to set the refresh rate and a server-side script to fetch data.. Service Portal widgets support a built-in 'refresh' option that can be set to a number of seconds, causing the widget to automatically re-render and re-fetch data via its server-side script. Combining this widget option with a server-side script that queries incidents is the recommended, platform-native pattern, avoiding custom client-side timers or third-party libraries.

Answer

Use a server-side script with a polling model to return data on a timer.

Answer

Use a third-party library for WebSocket connections.

Answer

Use a client-side JavaScript interval to reload the page.

Question 20

A form has a field 'Department' that, when changed, should make 'Manager' mandatory. The current implementation uses a client script that updates the field attribute on change. However, the mandatory behavior only works when the user first loads the form, but not when changing the field. What is the most likely cause?

Accepted Answer

A UI Policy with same condition is overriding the client script.. The script should use a UI Policy instead, as client scripts for such actions require proper event bindings and are less reliable.

Answer

The client script is not triggered because the field change event is not handled.

Answer

The script uses g_form.setMandatory() which only works on initial load, not on change.

Answer

The field is referenced by the wrong name.
