CAPM is PMI's entry-level project management credential. It validates foundational project management knowledge and demonstrates commitment to the profession — a career-starter credential for aspiring project managers without the experience to qualify for PMP.

Domain percentage weights are not currently available for this exam. The checklist below is still useful for planning your study.
Passing score: PMI uses a Proficient/Needs Improvement/Below Proficient rating — not a numerical score out of 1000.
Weeks 1–3
Project Management Fundamentals: project lifecycle, stakeholders, governance, project charter
Tip: CAPM was updated in July 2023 to include predictive, agile, and hybrid content alongside traditional PMBOK content. The new exam has 150 questions in 3 hours and covers: predictive project management (~27%), agile frameworks (~26%), business analysis (~21%), and PM fundamentals (~26%).
Weeks 4–6
Predictive Project Management: scope, schedule, cost, quality, risk, communications, procurement
Tip: Learn the PMBOK 7th Edition performance domains: stakeholders, team, development approach and lifecycle, planning, project work, delivery, measurement, and uncertainty. These domains replace the PMBOK 6th Edition knowledge areas — know both sets of terminology as the current exam references both.
Weeks 7–9
Agile Frameworks: Scrum, Kanban, XP; hybrid approaches
Tip: PMI's Agile Practice Guide is a key reference for CAPM. Know the four agile values (Agile Manifesto) and 12 principles. For Scrum: know what happens in each event, what each artifact contains, and what each role is responsible for. These are tested at a conceptual level on CAPM — no deep Scrum Master knowledge required.
Weeks 10–14
Business Analysis and Practice exam questions
Tip: Business analysis on the new CAPM covers: requirements elicitation techniques (interviews, focus groups, workshops, prototyping, document analysis), requirements documentation (use cases, user stories, requirements traceability matrix), and stakeholder analysis. These topics were not in pre-2023 CAPM content — ensure your study materials are current.
CAPM requires 23 contact hours of project management education. This can be fulfilled through a PMI-authorised training provider, a college course in project management, or an online learning programme — the hours must be documented and verifiable.
CAPM is valid for 5 years and does not require PDUs for renewal — you must retake the exam to renew. This differs from PMP which requires PDUs for ongoing certification.
The work breakdown structure (WBS) is a foundational deliverable-based tool tested on CAPM. Know that the WBS organises deliverables (not activities), that the lowest level is a work package, and that the WBS dictionary provides detail about each element. The WBS does NOT show sequence or dependencies — that is the schedule's job.
Project selection methods appear on CAPM: NPV (Net Present Value — higher is better), IRR (Internal Rate of Return — higher is better), payback period (time to recover investment — shorter is better), and benefit-cost ratio (> 1 means project adds value). Know what each method measures and which is preferred when multiple criteria are given.
The difference between a project (temporary endeavour to create a unique product/service/result) and operations (ongoing repetitive work that sustains the organisation) is a foundational CAPM distinction. Know that once a project deliverable is handed to operations, the project is complete — the ongoing maintenance is an operational activity.
