DAF Foundations OF Disciplined Agile — 25 Questions

Question 1

You are leading a project where the team needs to adopt a lean lifecycle. Which aspect of the DA toolkit helps you choose the right lifecycle for this specific context?

Accepted Answer

Process Goals. The Choose Your WoW process goal allows teams to select appropriate life cycles based on their unique situation.

Answer

Portfolio Management

Answer

Governance Framework

Answer

Team Roles

Question 2

Which of these is NOT a DA process blade?

Accepted Answer

Project Management. In the AWS Data Analytics Fundamentals (DAF) context, the 'DA process blades' refer to the core operational functions of a data analytics pipeline: Team Development, People Management, and Financial Management. Project Management is not considered a process blade; it is a broader discipline that may encompass these blades but is not one itself. Thus, Project Management is the correct answer because it does not belong to the set of DA process blades.

Answer

Team Development

Answer

People Management

Answer

Financial Management

Question 3

Which DA role is responsible for ensuring the team adheres to the selected process?

Accepted Answer

Team Lead. In Disciplined Agile, the Team Lead is the role responsible for ensuring the team adheres to the selected process and for facilitating the team's way of working (WoW). The Team Lead coaches the team, removes impediments, and ensures that the chosen practices are followed and improved upon. This role is akin to a servant-leader or agile coach within the team.

Answer

Architecture Owner

Answer

Product Owner

Answer

Stakeholder

Question 4

Which TWO of the following are considered key roles in a Disciplined Agile team?

Accepted Answer

Architecture Owner. In Disciplined Agile (DA), the Architecture Owner is a recognized primary role responsible for guiding the team's technical decisions, architectural direction, and technical risks, which is why option C is correct. The Team Lead is also a core DA role, responsible for facilitating the team's self-organization, removing impediments, and coaching the team toward high performance, making option E correct. By contrast, HR Manager (A) and General Manager (B) are organizational/management positions outside the DA team's defined roles, and Project Auditor (D) is an assurance or governance function rather than a DA team role, so none of these belong among the key roles.

Answer

HR Manager

Answer

General Manager

Answer

Project Auditor

Question 5

Which TWO of the following are stages in the DA 'Lifecycle' context?

Accepted Answer

Construction. In the TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM), the 'Lifecycle' context of the Digital Architecture refers to the phases that structure the architecture development process, and both Inception (E) and Construction (A) are recognized stages within that lifecycle. Inception (E) is the initial stage where the architecture vision, scope, and stakeholder concerns are established, initiating the architecture effort. Construction (A) is the subsequent stage where the architecture is actually built out—models, building blocks, and detailed designs are developed to realize the vision. Requirements Analysis (B) is a continuous activity that runs throughout the ADM rather than a discrete lifecycle stage, so it does not qualify. Finalization (C) is not a defined ADM lifecycle stage; the ADM ends with Architecture Change Management rather than a 'finalization' phase. Approval (D) is a governance decision point (e.g., Architecture Board sign-off) rather than a lifecycle stage itself, so it is not one of the two correct stages.

Answer

Requirements Analysis

Answer

Finalization

Answer

Approval

Question 6

Which THREE of the following are process goals within the DA framework?

Accepted Answer

Form Team. In the Disciplined Agile (DA) framework, process goals are the high-level outcomes that a team works toward, and 'Form Team' (A) is a valid process goal because it addresses how a team is initially organized and staffed. 'Coordinate Activities' (B) is also a process goal, covering how the team plans, aligns, and coordinates its work across the lifecycle. 'Address Risk' (E) is a recognized process goal focused on identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks throughout delivery. The unmarked options do not belong because 'Define all rules' (C) and 'Mandate the tools' (D) are prescriptive, top-down mandates rather than outcome-oriented process goals, and DA explicitly favors tailoring over imposing universal rules or tools.

Answer

Define all rules

Answer

Mandate the tools

Question 7

Which THREE of the following represent the DA layers of the framework?

Accepted Answer

Team Level. The DA (Disciplined Agile) framework organizes its layers from the team outward, and the three correct answers here are Team Level (A), Portfolio Management (D), and Enterprise Awareness (E). Team Level (A) is the foundational DA layer where a single delivery team applies its chosen way of working (WoW) to produce a solution. Portfolio Management (D) is the layer above program/discipline level, governing the prioritization, funding, and coordination of value streams across teams. Enterprise Awareness (E) is the outermost DA layer, aligning teams and portfolios with the organization's strategic direction, governance, and shared standards. The remaining options are not DA layers: Tooling Layer (B) is not one of the framework's defined layers, and External Consultant (C) is a role or resource, not a structural layer of the framework.

Answer

Tooling Layer

Answer

External Consultant

Question 8

A newly formed Disciplined Agile team is deciding how to organize its work. The team members are co-located, the solution is well understood, and they want to minimize documentation and maximize face-to-face communication. Which DA life cycle should they choose?

Accepted Answer

Agile life cycle. The Agile life cycle is the best fit because it is tailored for co-located teams working on well-understood solutions, emphasizing face-to-face communication and minimal documentation. The other life cycles address different contexts: Lean for scaling or distributed teams, Continuous Delivery for high-frequency releases, and Exploratory for uncertain solutions.

Answer

Lean life cycle

Answer

Exploratory life cycle

Answer

Continuous delivery: Agile life cycle

Question 9

What is the primary purpose of the 'Disciplined Agile' toolkit?

Accepted Answer

To help teams tailor their WoW. The Disciplined Agile toolkit is designed to help teams tailor their Way of Working (WoW) to fit their unique context. It provides a comprehensive set of process goals, practices, and strategies that teams can mix and match to create a customized approach. The primary purpose is to guide teams in making informed choices rather than prescribing a one-size-fits-all method.

Answer

To automate all documentation

Answer

To force teams to use Scrum

Answer

To replace all project managers

Question 10

You notice your team's velocity is inconsistent. How should you apply the 'Optimize Flow' principle?

Accepted Answer

Identify and remove bottlenecks. The 'Optimize Flow' principle in Disciplined Agile is about making value move smoothly through the system by finding and eliminating constraints. When velocity is inconsistent, the correct response is to identify bottlenecks — the constraint that limits throughput — and remove or relieve them, which stabilizes flow. This aligns with Lean's theory of constraints and the DA guidance to optimize the whole system rather than local efficiencies.

Answer

Add more team members

Answer

Increase WIP limits

Answer

Stop all meetings

Question 11

Which layer of the DA framework is responsible for aligning team efforts with the overall enterprise strategy?

Accepted Answer

Portfolio Management. In the Disciplined Agile framework, Portfolio Management is the layer that connects enterprise strategy to the work of delivery teams by selecting, prioritising, and funding initiatives. It ensures that team efforts roll up to strategic goals rather than operating in isolation. The other layers address team-level or awareness concerns, not strategic alignment.

Answer

Team Level

Answer

Enterprise Awareness

Answer

Governance

Question 12

A team is having trouble delivering value because they lack clear roles. Which DA process goal addresses role definition?

Accepted Answer

Form Team. In Disciplined Agile, the 'Form Team' process goal explicitly addresses establishing the team's structure, including defining roles, responsibilities, and working agreements. When a team lacks clear roles, the Form Team goal is the correct DA process goal because it covers team formation activities such as identifying needed skills, assigning roles, and establishing how the team will operate. This is distinct from coordination, risk, or scope goals.

Answer

Coordinate Activities

Answer

Address Risk

Answer

Explore Initial Scope

Question 13

Your team is struggling with frequent context switching. As a Disciplined Agile practitioner, which process blade would you consult to better manage your work flow?

Accepted Answer

Coordinate Activities. The Coordinate Activities process blade in Disciplined Agile focuses on managing the flow of work across teams, including planning, scheduling, and coordinating dependencies. It directly addresses issues like context switching by providing practices to visualize and limit work in progress, manage queues, and coordinate activities to reduce multitasking. This blade encompasses techniques such as kanban, Scrum of Scrums, and other coordination mechanisms that help teams maintain a smooth workflow.

Answer

Team Development

Answer

Financial Management

Answer

People Management

Question 14

Your organization is transitioning to a more agile governance model. Which approach should you adopt to ensure effective decision-making?

Accepted Answer

Lean Governance. Lean Governance focuses on risk-based oversight rather than bureaucratic checklists.

Answer

Command and Control

Answer

Ad-hoc Decision Making

Answer

Full Documentation

Question 15

You are assessing team performance. Which DA concept emphasizes that there is no 'one size fits all' approach?

Accepted Answer

Context Counts. The DA concept 'Context Counts' emphasizes that there is no one-size-fits-all approach; teams must tailor their way of working to their specific context. This principle is central to DA, which rejects prescriptive methods and encourages teams to choose practices that fit their situation. Therefore, 'Context Counts' is the correct answer.

Answer

Enterprise Awareness

Answer

Choice is Good

Answer

Optimizing Flow

Question 16

Which DA principle supports the idea that teams should improve their process incrementally?

Accepted Answer

Improve Process. The 'Improve Process' principle in DA states that teams should regularly reflect on and incrementally improve their way of working. It directly supports the idea of incremental process improvement rather than big-bang transformations. This principle encourages small, safe-to-fail experiments.

Answer

Choice is Good

Answer

Context Counts

Answer

Enterprise Awareness

Question 17

Your team needs to scale their agile efforts. What should be your first step according to DA?

Accepted Answer

Assess the current team maturity and context. According to Disciplined Agile, the first step when scaling agile efforts is to assess the current team maturity and context. DA emphasizes that scaling is not a one-size-fits-all journey; you must understand where the team is now (their skills, culture, constraints) before choosing a scaling approach. This aligns with DA's principle of 'Context Counts' and its guided continuous improvement approach.

Answer

Switch to Kanban

Answer

Add a Program Manager

Answer

Implement SAFe immediately

Question 18

What is the role of 'Enterprise Awareness' in the DA toolkit?

Accepted Answer

To encourage team members to act in the best interest of the organization. Enterprise Awareness in DA is a guiding principle that encourages individuals and teams to consider the whole organisation when making decisions, rather than optimising only for their local team. It pushes teams to act in the best interest of the enterprise, even when that means accepting a locally suboptimal outcome. This is distinct from standardisation or reporting mandates.

Answer

To ensure everyone works the same way

Answer

To report all team activities to management

Answer

To limit the team to internal tasks

Question 19

When applying the DA 'Choose Your WoW' tool, which factor is most important?

Accepted Answer

The team's current context. The 'Choose Your WoW' tool in Disciplined Agile is fundamentally about tailoring the way of working to the team's specific context. The most important factor is the team's current situation, including their size, distribution, skills, culture, and the nature of the work. This context-driven approach ensures that the chosen practices are fit for purpose rather than imposed from outside.

Answer

The budget available

Answer

Executive preference

Answer

The latest industry trend

Question 20

Your organization is struggling with siloed teams. How does DA suggest breaking these silos?

Accepted Answer

Implement cross-functional teams and coordination. Disciplined Agile suggests breaking down silos by implementing cross-functional teams and coordination mechanisms. Cross-functional teams bring together individuals with diverse skills to work on a shared goal, reducing handoffs and dependencies, while coordination practices (such as communities of practice, scrum of scrums, or DevOps) ensure alignment across teams.

Answer

Report all silos to HR

Answer

Force all teams to use the same tool

Answer

Mandate daily meetings for everyone
