DAF Foundations OF Agile — 15 Questions

Question 1

A cross-functional team is having trouble coordinating work. What is a core Disciplined Agile concept to facilitate better coordination?

Accepted Answer

Implement 'Coordinate Activities' as part of the DAD process blade. In Disciplined Agile, 'Coordinate Activities' is a process blade at the Program Level that addresses coordination among teams. It provides a framework for aligning work, managing dependencies, and facilitating communication across teams. Implementing this concept is a core DA approach to improve coordination for cross-functional teams.

Answer

Mandate that all teams use the exact same tool

Answer

Reduce the number of meetings for the teams

Answer

Assign a single project manager to control all communication

Question 2

Which THREE of the following are elements of 'Agile Governance'?

Accepted Answer

Continuous risk management. Agile governance is lightweight, transparent, and built into the workflow.

Answer

Requiring a signature for every small change

Answer

Strict adherence to a detailed yearly budget

Question 3

Which THREE factors influence a team's ability to be 'Agile'?

Accepted Answer

Team skill sets. Team agility is influenced by team size, skills, and the culture of the organization.

Answer

The type of software used for scheduling

Answer

The name of the project manager

Question 4

Which TWO of the following are benefits of 'Small Releases'?

Accepted Answer

Faster feedback from users. Option B (Faster feedback from users) is correct because delivering small, frequent releases puts working functionality in front of users sooner, so the team can gather real-world feedback quickly and adjust priorities or design before large investments are made. Option C (Reduced risk of failure) is correct because small releases limit the scope of each change, making defects easier to isolate, test, and roll back, and preventing a single large release from failing catastrophically. The unmarked options do not belong: A (longer hours) is not a benefit and contradicts sustainable pace, D (increased complexity of the release process) is the opposite of what small releases aim for since they simplify and automate delivery, and E (increased documentation requirements) is unrelated to small releases, which typically favor working software over heavy documentation.

Answer

The team works longer hours

Answer

Increased complexity of the release process

Answer

Increased documentation requirements

Question 5

Your organization is transitioning from a traditional waterfall environment to Disciplined Agile. Several departments are worried about losing visibility into project progress. What is the most appropriate way to provide this visibility?

Accepted Answer

Create a digital dashboard showing the 'Cumulative Flow Diagram' and 'Value Stream' metrics.. Disciplined Agile emphasizes empirical, flow-based transparency over plan-based reporting. A digital dashboard exposing Cumulative Flow Diagram (CFD) and value stream metrics gives stakeholders real-time visibility into work-in-progress, cycle time, and bottlenecks without disrupting the team. This aligns with DA's principle of 'delighting customers' through continuous value delivery and 'being pragmatic' about governance.

Answer

Maintain the original project plan in the enterprise scheduling tool.

Answer

Schedule weekly steering committee meetings for every project.

Answer

Require daily detailed status reports from every developer.

Question 6

A team is preparing for their 'Transition' phase. What is the primary focus of this phase according to the Disciplined Agile toolkit?

Accepted Answer

Ensuring the product is ready to be deployed, including support and organizational readiness.. The Transition phase focuses on ensuring the solution is ready for release, including deployment, training, and operational support.

Answer

Starting the development of the next major release.

Answer

multi_select

Answer

Writing all the requirements documentation for the next phase.

Answer

multi_select

Answer

Conducting a final design review with external auditors.

Question 7

A distributed team is struggling with coordination. They have daily stand-ups, but information silos persist across locations. According to Disciplined Agile, which strategy is most effective to improve coordination?

Accepted Answer

Use a shared visual management tool and asynchronous communication channels.. For distributed teams, Disciplined Agile suggests using shared visual management and asynchronous communication to create transparency and reduce coordination overhead. These practices enable team members to see work status and collaborate without constant synchronous meetings. The other options either add unnecessary overhead, are impractical, or focus on management reporting rather than team coordination.

Answer

Increase the frequency of status reports to management.

Answer

Implement a 'Scrum of Scrums' meeting with representatives from each location.

Answer

Require all team members to relocate to a single location.

Question 8

What is the primary benefit of the 'Iterative' approach over a 'Big Bang' delivery approach?

Accepted Answer

It allows for early detection and correction of errors. The iterative approach focuses on risk reduction and feedback through smaller, frequent releases.

Answer

It eliminates the need for project managers

Answer

It requires less documentation than waterfall

Answer

It ensures that all team members are always busy

Answer

It guarantees that no changes will be made to requirements

Question 9

A team is experiencing 'analysis paralysis' during the initial phase of their project. Which Disciplined Agile strategy is best to move forward?

Accepted Answer

Implement 'Just-in-Time' planning to reduce upfront analysis. Disciplined Agile suggests 'Evolutionary' approaches, where the team performs just enough planning to start, then adapts.

Answer

Extend the sprint duration to allow more time for analysis

Answer

Switch to a full Kanban system without any planning

Answer

Mandate a strict waterfall phase gate review

Question 10

A team is struggling with 'technical debt'. According to Disciplined Agile, which action is most appropriate to address this during the iteration?

Accepted Answer

Include 'refactoring' and 'testing' tasks within each iteration. Disciplined Agile advocates addressing technical debt continuously rather than deferring it. The most appropriate action is to include refactoring and testing tasks within each iteration, so that debt is paid down incrementally as part of normal delivery. This aligns with DA's principle of delivering consumable solutions and its guidance that quality is built in, not bolted on.

Answer

Outsource the technical debt resolution to a different team

Answer

Ignore the debt until the project is near completion

Answer

Create a separate 'technical debt sprint' once a year

Question 11

Your team is struggling with scope creep due to unclear requirements from stakeholders. Using Disciplined Agile principles, what is the most appropriate action?

Accepted Answer

Increase the frequency of stakeholder feedback loops. Scope creep from unclear requirements is best addressed by tightening and increasing feedback loops with stakeholders so requirements are clarified iteratively and misunderstandings surface early. DA favours frequent, lightweight stakeholder collaboration over documentation-heavy or scope-freezing approaches. This aligns with DA's principle of delighting customers through continuous engagement.

Answer

Hire a dedicated business analyst to write detailed documentation

Answer

Lock down the scope for the next six months

Answer

Ignore the stakeholders until the product increment is finished

Question 12

During a project, the team realizes the initial plan is no longer viable due to market changes. What should they do?

Accepted Answer

Update the plan and pivot the strategy accordingly. Agile teams embrace change and pivot based on empirical evidence and feedback.

Answer

Wait for the end of the year to reassess

Answer

Ask the stakeholders to force the team to continue

Answer

Stick to the original plan to show commitment

Question 13

Which of the following best describes the 'Disciplined Agile Mindset' regarding process?

Accepted Answer

Be pragmatic and choose your way of working (WoW). The Disciplined Agile Mindset is built on principles such as 'Be Pragmatic', 'Choose Your WoW', and 'Deliver Consumable Solutions'. Regarding process, the mindset explicitly states that teams should be pragmatic and choose their way of working (WoW) — tailoring practices to their context rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all method. This is the core of DA's philosophy.

Answer

Copy the processes of the most successful competitors

Answer

Follow the Scrum guide verbatim

Answer

Focus exclusively on speed of delivery

Question 14

Your team needs to balance the 'Adaptive' vs 'Predictive' lifecycle. Which criteria should you prioritize when making this choice?

Accepted Answer

The level of uncertainty and risk in the project. The choice between Adaptive (Agile) and Predictive (Waterfall) lifecycles hinges primarily on how well requirements and risks are understood upfront. High uncertainty and risk favor an Adaptive approach because iterative delivery allows course correction as new information emerges. Conversely, low uncertainty and well-understood requirements favor a Predictive approach where detailed upfront planning is safe. Budget and team tenure are secondary considerations that do not fundamentally dictate lifecycle selection.

Answer

The tenure of the team members

Answer

The total budget allocated to the project

Answer

The seniority of the stakeholders

Question 15

A team is transitioning from a traditional project management approach to Disciplined Agile. Which mindset shift is most critical for the team to embrace during their first iteration?

Accepted Answer

Focusing on delivering high-value, working software early and often. The core of Disciplined Agile is the pragmatic shift towards value delivery over rigid adherence to process, emphasizing a 'choose your way of working' approach.

Answer

Eliminating all documentation throughout the lifecycle

Answer

Strict adherence to the project charter

Answer

Reducing the team size to improve velocity
