XML tags are a prompting technique for the model's benefit, not a strict schema requirement for the API transport layer.","masteryContext":""},{"key":"B","isCorrect":false,"text":"It enables Claude to parse the content as a valid XML object.","explanation":"While Claude can recognize the structure, it does not 'parse' it in the way a traditional XML parser would. Instead, it uses the tags as visual and semantic markers to understand the relationship between different blocks of text, helping it identify where one document ends and another begins.","masteryContext":""},{"key":"C","isCorrect":true,"text":"It improves the model's ability to distinguish context from instructions.","explanation":"Using XML tags creates a clear visual and logical boundary between the input data and the user's question. This allows Claude to focus its attention mechanism more effectively on the relevant sections of the prompt, reducing the chances of confusing the content of the documents with the task.","masteryContext":""},{"key":"D","isCorrect":false,"text":"It automatically bypasses the model's safety filters for large data.","explanation":"XML tags have no impact on the model's safety filters or content moderation systems. Safety filters operate independently of the prompt's formatting structure, and using tags will not allow a user to circumvent the core safety training or guardrails implemented by Anthropic.","masteryContext":""}],"correctOptionKey":"C","correctOptions":["C"],"correctAnswerText":"","isMultiSelect":false,"mainExplanation":"Claude is specifically trained to recognize and utilize XML tags for structural organization. These tags help the model delineate between instructions, metadata, and actual content. In complex prompts, this separation reduces the likelihood of the model misinterpreting data as instructions, thereby increasing the reliability and accuracy of the generated responses.","examTrap":"Candidates often treat XML tags merely as cosmetic styling rather than recognizing them as structural boundaries that prevent the model from confusing data with instructions.","examTip":null,"technicalDeepDive":"Claude processes the entire prompt as a single token stream, so without structural markers it must infer which spans are reference material versus directives. XML-style tags like and create explicit delimiters that survive tokenization as recognizable patterns, letting the model attend to boundaries between instruction and data. This matters because long context windows dilute positional cues; wrapping retrieved chunks in tags keeps the instruction portion salient even when thousands of tokens of source text are interleaved. A realistic case is a retrieval-augmented pipeline where ten policy PDFs are injected before the user question: tagging each excerpt prevents Claude from treating a sentence inside a document as a command, reducing prompt-injection risk and improving answer fidelity without any schema enforcement.","keyConcepts":[],"faqs":[],"eliminationLogic":null,"exhibitText":"{\n \"model\": \"claude-3-5-sonnet-20240620\",\n \"max_tokens\": 1024,\n \"messages\": [\n {\n \"role\": \"user\",\n \"content\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"text\",\n \"text\": \"\\nThe fiscal year ends in June.\\nThe budget is $5M.\\n\\nAnswer the question using the docs: When does the year end?\"\n }\n ]\n }\n ]\n}
