HSRP: a redundant default gateway
Give a LAN a virtual gateway shared by two routers with HSRP, make R1 the preferred active router, and prove the LAN keeps working when R1's LAN link fails.
About 25 minutes 6 devices 3 tasksIntermediate
Scenario
PC1 uses 192.168.1.254 as its default gateway, but no device owns that address yet. R1 (192.168.1.1) and R2 (192.168.1.2) both connect the LAN to the core. Configure HSRP group 10 with virtual IP 192.168.1.254 on both routers. R1 should be active (priority 110) and take the role back after a failure (preempt). The test: PC1 must still reach the internet host 8.8.8.8 with R1's LAN interface down.
Your tasks
- HSRP group 10 on both routers owns 192.168.1.254, and PC1 can ping 8.8.8.8 through it.
- R1 is the active router with priority 110 and preemption; R2 is standby.
- With R1's LAN interface down, PC1 still reaches 8.8.8.8 through R2.
The lab checks the result, not the exact commands. For example, a ping task passes only when the ping really succeeds through the network you built.
