VCP-VVF Troubleshoot And Optimize — Timed 25 Questions

Question 1

An ESXi 9.0 host in a vSphere cluster experiences a purple diagnostic screen (PSOD). Where should the administrator navigate in vSphere Client or use via CLI to locate the core dump file for analysis by VMware Support?

25 minute time limit — choose an answer to begin.

Accepted Answer

Generate a support bundle from the vSphere Client or examine the configured diagnostic partition / scratch partition using 'esxcli system coredump file get'.. ESXi stores VMkernel core dumps either locally or configured via esxcli system coredump. By default, host core dumps are directed to a shared scratch/core location or a local diagnostic partition. Administrators can also check vCenter events or retrieve logs via the vSphere Client support bundle generator.

Answer

Open Aria Operations and download the 'Host Crash Archive' report from the administration tab.

Answer

Navigate to the VMFS datastore root folder and open the 'vmware-psod.log' text file.

Answer

Log into the vCenter Server appliance shell and check '/var/log/vmware/vpxd/psod/' directory.

Question 2

An administrator is investigating intermittent storage latency spikes on a VMFS datastore backed by an all-flash array. Using vRealize / Aria Operations or vSphere performance graphs, which metric should the administrator examine first to determine if the latency originates within the ESXi storage stack versus the underlying storage array?

Accepted Answer

Compare Kernel Latency (KAVG) and Device Latency (DAVG/GAVG) to see if the delay is introduced inside the ESXi storage stack or by the storage array.. Device Latency (GAVG) measures total latency, while Kernel Latency (KAVG) measures time spent in the ESXi kernel storage stack, and Queue Latency (QUAG) measures time spent in the host queue. Comparing KAVG and GAVG helps isolate the domain.

Answer

Review the datastore free space percentage.

Answer

Check the VM Swapfile I/O rate to see if the guest OS is paging.

Answer

Inspect the physical switch buffer drop rate for the iSCSI/FC interfaces.

Question 3

An administrator notices that a virtual machine in a vSphere Foundation 9.0 environment is experiencing high CPU ready time. Which performance counter in vSphere Client best helps determine if the VM is being constrained by CPU limits imposed by vSphere DRS or administrator settings?

Accepted Answer

Check the 'Max Limited' or 'CPU Limit' metric in the vSphere performance charts for the affected virtual machine.. CPU Limit restricts the maximum CPU resources a VM can consume, leading to high ready time if demand exceeds the limit. The metric 'Max Limited' or tracking the effective limit against usage helps identify limit constraints.

Answer

Review the 'Co-stop' metric to see if multiple vCPUs are misaligned.

Answer

Examine the 'Swapin rate' to check for memory pressure.

Answer

Verify the 'Kernel Memory' overhead counters.

Question 4

An administrator is troubleshooting a vSAN 9.0 stretched cluster where the witness host has lost management connectivity to the primary site. The data sites remain operational. What is the expected immediate impact on the vSAN storage pools?

Accepted Answer

Storage remains available as long as the primary site and the witness maintain data path connectivity, but vSAN health alarms will trigger due to management loss.. In a vSAN stretched cluster, the witness host provides a tie-breaking vote for quorum. If the witness loses management connectivity to the primary site but data path connectivity remains, storage remains available because the data path is separate from the management network. However, vSAN health alarms will trigger due to the loss of management connectivity, alerting administrators.

Answer

All virtual machines on the affected site immediately power off to prevent split-brain.

Answer

The vSAN cluster automatically falls back to a standard single-site cluster layout.

Answer

The vSAN datastore becomes entirely read-only across all sites.

Question 5

An administrator is troubleshooting a storage migration (Storage vMotion) failure between two datastores in a vSphere Foundation 9.0 environment. Which THREE conditions or checks should be verified before attempting the migration again? (Choose three.)

Accepted Answer

The destination datastore must have sufficient free capacity to accommodate the virtual machine's thick-provisioned or thin-provisioned footprint.. Option B is correct because Storage vMotion requires the destination datastore to have enough free space to hold the VM's disks in their actual provisioned form, whether thick or thin, otherwise the migration fails with an out-of-space error. Option C is correct because during a Storage vMotion the ESXi host must maintain active paths to both the source and destination datastores so it can read from the old location and write to the new one; missing paths or APD/PDL conditions will abort the migration. Option E is correct because snapshot files and disk formats must be compatible with the datastore's VMFS version, and legacy VMFS limits such as the 2TB maximum file size can block migration if a snapshot or disk exceeds that limit. Option A is incorrect because Storage vMotion supports live migration of powered-on VMs, so powering off is not required. Option D is incorrect because datastore LUN IDs are handled through the storage fabric and ESXi path management, not by reconfiguring a physical switch port channel to trunk LUN IDs.

Answer

The virtual machine must be powered off for any Storage vMotion operation to succeed.

Answer

The physical switch port channel must be reconfigured to trunk the new datastore LUN IDs.

Question 6

An administrator notices that a vCenter Server appliance (VCSA 9.0) user interface is loading very slowly, and alarms indicate high disk usage on the root partition. Which tool should the administrator use first to clean up log files or safely manage VCSA disk space?

Accepted Answer

Log into the VAMI (port 5480) or appliance shell via SSH to identify which partition is full and inspect log directories under /var/log/.. The vCenter Server Appliance Management Interface (VAMI) on port 5480 provides built-in disk space monitoring and tools to manage updates and configuration, while SSH access allows running native disk cleanup scripts or checking logs. However, VAMI or command-line log management is standard. Specifically, checking disk usage via VAMI gives visibility, and the appliance shell provides utilities.

Answer

Reinstall vCenter Server using the deployment wizard.

Answer

Run a Storage vMotion on the VCSA to a larger datastore, which automatically shrinks guest OS partitions.

Answer

Reboot the physical ESXi host hosting the VCSA VM.

Question 7

An administrator is troubleshooting high memory utilization on an ESXi 9.0 host using esxtop. Which TWO memory metrics in esxtop are primary indicators that the host is experiencing severe memory pressure and actively reclaiming memory from virtual machines? (Choose two.)

Accepted Answer

MCTLSZ (Ballooned memory size). MCTLSZ (Ballooned memory size) is a primary indicator of memory pressure because it shows how much guest physical memory the balloon driver has reclaimed from VMs; when the host is under severe pressure, the balloon driver inflates inside guests, so a nonzero or rising MCTLSZ directly signals active reclamation. SWCUR (Current swap usage) is also a primary indicator because it reflects the amount of VM memory currently swapped out to the host swap file; swapping occurs only when ballooning and other reclamation methods are insufficient, so elevated SWCUR confirms severe memory pressure and active reclaim. MEMSZ (Total memory size assigned) merely reports the configured memory size of a world or VM and does not indicate pressure or reclamation. RPCT (Reservation percentage) shows the percentage of a VM's configured memory that is reserved, which is a configuration/entitlement metric rather than a pressure indicator. CPSIZ (Compressed page size) is a per-page compression metric and, while related to the compressed memory cache, is not one of the two primary indicators of severe pressure and active reclamation compared with ballooning and swapping.

Answer

MEMSZ (Total memory size assigned)

Answer

RPCT (Reservation percentage)

Answer

CPSIZ (Compressed page size)

Question 8

An administrator is troubleshooting a storage connectivity loss on an ESXi 9.0 host utilizing software iSCSI. The host can no longer reach the iSCSI storage targets. Which esxcli command should be used to rescan all iSCSI adapters and discover newly restored paths?

Accepted Answer

esxcli storage core adapter rescan --all. The command 'esxcli storage core adapter rescan --all' triggers a rescan of all storage adapters (HBA, iSCSI, NVMe, etc.) on the ESXi host, causing the VMkernel to re-discover LUNs and paths. This is the correct tool when iSCSI connectivity is restored and the host needs to see newly available targets and paths. It is the CLI equivalent of the vSphere Client 'Rescan Storage' action.

Answer

esxcli storage filesystem mount

Answer

esxcli vsan cluster refresh

Answer

esxcli network ip connection list

Question 9

An administrator notices that a virtual machine's performance graph in vSphere Client shows flatlines or missing historical data. Which vCenter service is primarily responsible for collecting and storing performance statistics into the vCenter database?

Accepted Answer

The vCenter Statistics service (integrated into vpxd and the associated database backend).. The vCenter Statistics service (managed within the vpxd process and historical database jobs) handles performance metric collection and rollup.

Answer

The vRealize Log Insight forwarding agent.

Answer

The ESXi CIM server (sfcb).

Answer

The VMware Host Client daemon (hostd).

Question 10

An administrator is investigating a network connectivity issue on an ESXi host where specific VLAN-tagged traffic is failing. The physical switch port is configured as a trunk. Which esxcli command can the administrator use to capture packets on a specific physical uplink (vmnic) to verify whether 802.1Q tags are arriving correctly?

Accepted Answer

pktcap-uw --uplink vmnicX --dir 0 -o /tmp/capture.pcap. The correct command is pktcap-uw, which is the native packet capture tool in ESXi. The --uplink vmnicX option specifies the physical uplink to capture from, and --dir 0 captures both ingress and egress traffic. This allows the administrator to verify whether 802.1Q VLAN tags are present on incoming frames from the physical switch trunk port.

Answer

tcpdump-uw -i vmnicX -w /tmp/capture.pcap

Answer

esxcli vswitch standard trace -n vmnicX

Answer

esxcli network pcap start --nic vmnicX

Question 11

An administrator is optimizing a vSphere 9.0 cluster running latency-sensitive enterprise applications. Which THREE settings or features should be configured to ensure lowest possible latency and jitter? (Choose three.)

Accepted Answer

Set the ESXi host Power Management Policy to 'High Performance' (Static High).. Option A is correct because setting the ESXi host Power Management Policy to 'High Performance' (Static High) disables CPU frequency scaling and C-state transitions, keeping cores at maximum clock speed and eliminating the latency and jitter those power-saving transitions introduce. Option C is correct because reserving 100% of the VM's guest memory guarantees the configured RAM is backed by physical host memory, preventing ballooning, memory compression, and swapping that would otherwise cause unpredictable stalls. Option D is correct because the Latency Sensitivity setting of 'High' on the VM applies a focused optimization profile (including CPU and memory scheduling tweaks such as fully reserving memory and disabling certain coalescing behaviors) specifically designed to minimize scheduling latency and jitter for latency-sensitive workloads. Option B does not belong because Hyper-Threading does not double physical cores and, while it can improve throughput, it shares execution resources between sibling threads and can actually increase latency variability rather than reduce it. Option E does not belong because Storage DRS is a storage load-balancing and placement feature, and running it every 15 minutes addresses capacity/IO balance, not the CPU and memory scheduling latency that governs jitter for latency-sensitive applications.

Answer

Enable Hyper-Threading to artificially double the physical core count for background tasks.

Answer

Configure Storage DRS to run continuously every 15 minutes.

Question 12

An administrator is troubleshooting a vSAN 9.0 cluster health alarm indicating that a disk group is 'Degraded' and several components are absent. Which THREE actions can the administrator take to remediate or investigate this condition? (Choose three.)

Accepted Answer

If the disk has failed permanently, replace the physical drive and rebuild or recreate the vSAN disk group, allowing vSAN to automatically rebuild missing components based on storage policies.. When vSAN components are absent, investigating via health checks, checking disk state using esxcli or vSAN health UI, and understanding whether the host/disk is permanently lost or temporarily offline (e.g., maintenance mode vs disk failure) is critical. If permanently lost, allowing object repair or replacing the disk is necessary.

Answer

Reboot vCenter Server, which automatically forces vSAN to recreate lost disk groups.

Answer

Reformat the entire vSAN datastore to factory defaults.

Question 13

An administrator is troubleshooting a storage multipathing issue on an ESXi 9.0 host where a Fibre Channel LUN is flapping between active and dead paths. Which command can the administrator run via SSH to inspect the current path status, path selection policy (PSP), and storage array controller details?

Accepted Answer

esxcli storage nmp path list. `esxcli storage nmp path list` is the correct command because it queries the Pluggable Storage Architecture (PSA) and NMP (Native Multipathing Plugin) layer, returning each device's path state (active, standby, dead), the assigned Path Selection Policy (VMW_PSP_FIXED, VMW_PSP_RR, etc.), and the associated storage array type plugin (SATP) and controller details. This is exactly the data needed to diagnose a flapping FC LUN. The other commands query unrelated subsystems (fabric login, VMFS extents, or FC adapter connections) and do not expose per-path NMP state.

Answer

esxcli storage san fabric status

Answer

esxcli fcadapter connection get

Answer

esxcli vmfs datastore extent list

Question 14

An administrator is troubleshooting a memory overcommitment issue on an ESXi 9.0 host. When host memory is fully utilized, ESXi reclaims memory using ballooning, transparent page sharing (TPS), and memory compression. In what order does ESXi typically attempt these memory reclamation techniques?

Accepted Answer

TPS (Transparent Page Sharing), followed by Ballooning (vmmemctl), Memory Compression, and finally Swapping.. ESXi reclaims memory in a graduated order designed to avoid the performance penalty of swapping: first Transparent Page Sharing (TPS) deduplicates identical pages, then ballooning uses the vmmemctl driver to reclaim guest pages, then memory compression compresses cold pages into a compressed cache, and finally the hypervisor swaps to disk as a last resort.

Answer

Memory Compression, Swapping, Ballooning, and then TPS.

Answer

Ballooning first, followed instantly by powering off idle virtual machines.

Answer

Swapping immediately, followed by Ballooning, TPS, and Memory Compression.

Question 15

An administrator is troubleshooting a performance issue in a vSphere Foundation 9.0 environment where virtual machines are experiencing sluggish storage responsiveness on a VMFS datastore. Which THREE native tools or commands can the administrator use to gather detailed storage performance and path diagnostic data? (Choose three.)

Accepted Answer

vSphere Client Performance Charts (Datastore and VM storage views). Option B is correct because vSphere Client Performance Charts provide native Datastore and VM storage views that graph metrics such as read/write latency, IOPS, and throughput, letting the administrator correlate sluggish responsiveness with actual storage performance over time. Option C is correct because esxtop, after pressing 'u' to switch to disk device view and 's' to switch to storage path view, exposes per-device and per-path latency counters including DAVG (device average), KAVG (kernel average), and QAVG (queue average), which are the standard indicators for diagnosing VMFS storage latency. Option E is correct because 'esxcli storage nmp path list' shows the paths, path states, and PSP (Path Selection Policy) for each device, while 'esxcli storage core device list' shows device-level details such as vendor, model, and status, together providing the path diagnostic data needed to identify failed or unbalanced paths. Option A is not correct because 'esxcli license assign --diagnostic' is not a valid command for assigning licenses or gathering storage performance data. Option D is not correct because 'esxcli vswandb query' is not a valid esxcli namespace or command for querying storage path or performance information.

Answer

esxcli license assign --diagnostic

Answer

esxcli vswandb query

Question 16

An administrator is troubleshooting high CPU usage on an ESXi host and suspects a runaway virtual machine. Using esxtop, which TWO columns in the CPU panel should the administrator examine to identify the specific VM consuming the most physical CPU resources? (Choose two.)

Accepted Answer

%RUN (Percentage of time scheduled on a physical CPU). In esxtop's CPU panel, the %RUN column shows the percentage of time each world (including a VM's worlds) was actually scheduled on a physical CPU, so a runaway VM will display a high %RUN value, making option B a direct indicator of which VM is consuming physical CPU time. The %USED column reports the percentage of physical CPU resources used by that world/VM, so option E also directly identifies the VM consuming the most physical CPU capacity. Together, %RUN and %USED let the administrator pinpoint the specific VM driving high host CPU usage. The other options are unrelated to CPU consumption: SWCUR (A) reflects current swap usage, MCTLSZ (C) reflects ballooned memory size, and DAVG (D) measures device latency, so none of them identify CPU-hungry VMs.

Answer

SWCUR (Current swap usage)

Answer

MCTLSZ (Ballooned memory size)

Answer

DAVG (Device latency)

Question 17

An administrator is troubleshooting a vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS) configuration where LACP (Link Aggregation Control Protocol) is enabled between ESXi hosts and the physical upstream switches. The port channel is down. Which command or log file should the administrator check on the ESXi host to inspect LACP state and negotiation status?

Accepted Answer

esxcli network vswitch dvs lacp status get or inspecting lacp logs in /var/log/. ESXi provides net-vmswitch and esxcli network vswitch dvs lacp commands or log inspection in /var/log/lacp.log or vpxd.log to check LACP state.

Answer

esxcli storage core path list

Answer

esxcli system ip route list

Answer

esxcli vsan cluster get

Question 18

An administrator is troubleshooting a storage performance issue on an ESXi host and wants to use esxtop to analyze disk performance. Which TWO keystrokes or views in esxtop provide storage performance statistics? (Choose two.)

Accepted Answer

Press 'd' while running esxtop to display the physical adapter / disk controller statistics view.. In esxtop, pressing 'd' switches to the disk adapter view, which shows physical adapter/disk controller statistics such as queue depth, commands per second, and latency for HBAs and storage adapters, making option A correct for analyzing storage performance. Pressing 'v' switches to the virtual disk view, which displays per-virtual-machine virtual disk statistics including read/write IOPS, latency, and throughput, making option C correct. Option B is wrong because 'c' shows CPU scheduling statistics, not storage. Option D is wrong because 'm' shows memory statistics and memory reclamation counters. Option E is wrong because 'n' shows network interface statistics, which are unrelated to disk performance.

Answer

Press 'c' while running esxtop to display CPU scheduling statistics.

Answer

Press 'm' while running esxtop to display memory reclamation statistics.

Answer

Press 'n' while running esxtop to display network interface statistics.

Question 19

An administrator is troubleshooting a high-availability failover issue in a vSphere 9.0 cluster where virtual machines on a failed host were not restarted by vSphere HA. Which THREE underlying causes could explain this failure? (Choose three.)

Accepted Answer

A complete network partition occurred where the surviving hosts cannot communicate with the isolated host and datastore heartbeats were also unavailable.. Common reasons for HA failover failure include insufficient cluster compute resources under admission control, network isolation without configured isolation response, or datastore accessibility loss affecting heartbeat files and cluster communication.

Answer

Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) mode was disabled on the cluster.

Answer

Storage I/O Control (SIOC) latency threshold was set below 10ms.

Question 20

An administrator is troubleshooting a vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS) uplink connectivity issue. The administrator suspects that a specific physical switch port connected to an ESXi host uplink (vmnic) has been disabled or misconfigured. Which vSphere Client view allows the administrator to inspect the CDP (Cisco Discovery Protocol) or LLDP (Link Layer Discovery Protocol) information received from the physical switch?

Accepted Answer

Select the vDS -> Monitor -> Uplink / Topology / Physical Switch view to inspect CDP/LLDP neighbor details.. The vSphere Client exposes CDP/LLDP neighbor information under the vDS Monitor tab in the Uplink/Topology/Physical Switch view, which shows the physical switch name, port ID, and management address learned via CDP or LLDP. This is the only supported GUI location to inspect what the physical switch advertises to the ESXi uplink. The other options either reference non-existent commands, irrelevant tabs, or unrelated licensing screens.

Answer

Run 'esxcli network cdp get' via the vCenter appliance shell.

Answer

Check the virtual machine hardware summary tab.

Answer

Open vCenter Administration -> Licensing -> Physical Switch Maps.
