VCP-VVF Practice Test 5 — 25 Questions

Question 1

An administrator is troubleshooting a failure where VCF Operations fails to collect metrics from a vCenter Server instance in the VVF inventory. The test connection fails with a credential validation error. After verifying the service account password is correct, what underlying issue should the administrator investigate?

Choose an answer to begin — your selection is scored in the full session.

Accepted Answer

Verify that the service account has not been locked out due to multiple failed login attempts and possesses the required Read-Only or Administrator privileges across the vCenter inventory.. A credential validation error in VCF Operations metric collection usually means the service account itself is unusable, not that the password string is wrong. The two most common causes are account lockout from repeated failed authentications (often caused by an old cached credential or a scheduled task) and insufficient privileges — the account needs at least Read-Only at the vCenter root and propagated down, or Administrator for full metric collection. Verifying lockout state and permission scope is the correct next step.

Answer

Restart the VMware vRealize Log Insight agent on the vCenter appliance.

Answer

Reinstall the vCenter Server Appliance operating system.

Answer

Change the ESXi host root password via the DCUI.

Question 2

An administrator is configuring a Resource Pool hierarchy in a vSphere Foundation cluster. A child resource pool is set to 'Expandable Reservation'. When does this setting take effect during resource contention?

Accepted Answer

When the child resource pool exhausts its own reservation and the parent has unreserved resources available.. An expandable reservation allows a child resource pool to borrow resources from its parent when its own reservation is fully consumed, but only if the parent has unreserved resources available. This setting takes effect during resource contention when the child pool's reservation is exhausted and the parent has spare capacity. It does not trigger vSphere HA, nor is it related to VM power state or Storage DRS.

Answer

When the parent resource pool runs out of physical memory and triggers vSphere HA.

Answer

When virtual machines inside the child pool are powered off.

Answer

When Storage DRS initiates a datastore migration.

Question 3

An administrator notices that a virtual machine has a warning icon in the vSphere Client indicating that 'VMware Tools is not running'. What is the impact of VMware Tools not running on virtual machine manageability and performance monitoring?

Accepted Answer

Guest OS IP addresses will not appear in vCenter, graceful guest shutdowns/reboots will be unavailable, and guest performance metrics will be limited.. VMware Tools is the guest-side agent that provides the communication channel between the guest OS and the ESXi host/vCenter. Without it running, vCenter cannot retrieve guest OS IP addresses, cannot initiate graceful shutdown/reboot (soft power operations), and cannot collect guest-level performance metrics such as memory/CPU usage inside the guest. The VM still runs and its virtual hardware remains fully functional, but manageability and monitoring are degraded.

Answer

The virtual machine's virtual disks will automatically become read-only.

Answer

The virtual machine will immediately power off to prevent guest corruption.

Answer

Storage vMotion will be permanently disabled for that specific VM.

Question 4

An administrator is designing a vSphere Foundation 9.0 cluster and wishes to implement Network I/O Control (NIOC) version 3 to manage traffic contention on 10GbE/25GbE uplinks. How does NIOC prioritize traffic across system traffic types?

Accepted Answer

By allocating user-defined shares and reservation percentages to specific system traffic types on the distributed switch uplinks.. NIOC version 3 on a vSphere Distributed Switch allows administrators to allocate bandwidth to system traffic types (e.g., vMotion, management, iSCSI) using shares, reservations, and limits. Shares determine relative priority during contention, while reservations guarantee a minimum bandwidth. This provides granular control over how different traffic types compete for physical uplink resources.

Answer

By enforcing strict packet drop rules on management traffic when vMotion exceeds 80% utilization.

Answer

By rewriting DSCP bits on physical core switch headers directly.

Answer

By dynamically migrating virtual machines to less congested physical switches using BGP routing.

Question 5

An administrator is configuring a new alarm in vSphere 9.0 to monitor high memory consumption across virtual machines. The alarm triggers correctly, but the notification email fails to send. Where are the global SMTP mail server settings configured for vCenter Server alarms?

Accepted Answer

The vSphere Client under Administration > General Settings > Edit Settings (Mail server). Global SMTP mail server settings for vCenter Server alarms are configured in the vSphere Client under Administration > General Settings > Edit Settings, where you specify the mail server hostname, port, sender address, and authentication. This is the centralized location that all vCenter alarms use for email notifications.

Answer

The vSphere Client under Administration > Single Sign-On > Configuration > Email

Answer

VMware Aria Operations under Administration > Outbound > Mail Settings

Answer

vCenter Server Appliance Management Interface (VAMI) under Email Settings

Question 6

Which component in a vSphere Foundation environment is responsible for managing the desired state of host software and firmware?

Accepted Answer

vSphere Lifecycle Manager. vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) uses a declarative model to ensure hosts maintain the desired software and firmware versions.

Answer

Aria Automation

Answer

vSphere Distributed Switch

Answer

vCenter Server Appliance

Question 7

An administrator needs to check if a host is compliant with the desired image in vLCM. What is the process to trigger a compliance check?

Accepted Answer

Select Cluster > Updates > Check Compliance. The 'Check Compliance' button under the Updates tab allows manual verification of image state.

Answer

Select Host > Remediate

Answer

vCenter > Settings > Lifecycle

Answer

Host > Monitor > Lifecycle

Question 8

An administrator is designing a vSphere Foundation 9.0 cluster and wants to ensure that when an ESXi host loses its connection to all storage devices (All Paths Down - APD), affected virtual machines are handled appropriately. Which vSphere HA setting configures this behavior?

Accepted Answer

VM Component Protection (VMCP). VM Component Protection (VMCP) in vSphere HA manages storage failure conditions such as All Paths Down (APD) and Permanent Device Loss (PDL), allowing automated restart policies for affected VMs.

Answer

Storage DRS placement aggregation rules.

Answer

Network I/O Control bandwidth reservations.

Answer

Enhanced vMotion Compatibility baselines.

Question 9

You are managing VVF and need to update the vCenter Server. Before performing the update, what is the most important step to perform on the VCSA?

Accepted Answer

Perform a VCSA file-based backup. Taking a file-based backup is critical for recovery in case the update fails.

Answer

Take a snapshot of the vCenter VM

Answer

Delete all templates to free space

Answer

Restart all services

Question 10

An administrator is planning the IP addressing architecture for a vSphere Foundation 9.0 deployment. Which network segment requires routable IP addresses across the enterprise network?

Accepted Answer

The ESXi management and vCenter Server network.. vCenter Server and ESXi management networks must be routable across the enterprise to enable centralized management, monitoring, and administration.

Answer

Fault Tolerance logging traffic between isolated secondary virtual machines.

Answer

Internal private back-end isolated vSAN traffic within a single rack.

Answer

Local scratch log partition loops.

Question 11

An administrator notices that an ESXi host is displaying a warning banner in the Direct Console User Interface (DCUI) indicating that the evaluation license is about to expire. Where should the administrator navigate in the vSphere Client to assign a permanent vSphere Foundation license key?

Accepted Answer

Navigate to vCenter Administration -> Licensing -> Assets -> Licenses and add/assign the new license key.. Assigning and managing vSphere license keys is performed under vCenter Administration -> Licensing or Host -> Configure -> Licensing.

Answer

Edit the virtual machine hardware settings to include a license key vNIC.

Answer

Open vSphere Lifecycle Manager -> Baseline Management -> Licenses.

Answer

Log into the ESXi DCUI, select 'Troubleshooting Options', and enter the license key.

Question 12

An administrator notices that vSphere DRS is failing to migrate virtual machines automatically to balance cluster load. Upon checking the cluster configuration, DRS is enabled and set to Fully Automated. What is a likely cause preventing DRS from executing migrations?

Accepted Answer

Conflicting VM-to-Host or VM-to-VM affinity rules that prevent placement on the targeted balanced hosts.. Host or VM affinity rules, or anti-affinity rules, can restrict DRS movement. If rules conflict or if VMs have specific hardware dependencies (e.g., connected USB devices or strict placement rules), DRS will suppress migrations.

Answer

Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) mode is set to a baseline higher than the host CPUs.

Answer

HA admission control is disabled in the cluster.

Answer

The vCenter inventory service database is missing the DRS license key.

Question 13

An administrator is troubleshooting a vSphere cluster where Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) recommendations are not being generated. Upon reviewing the cluster settings, DRS is enabled, but the migration threshold is set to the most conservative level. How does setting DRS to the most conservative migration threshold affect recommendations?

Accepted Answer

DRS will only generate recommendations for severe load imbalances (Priority 1), resulting in fewer automated migrations.. A conservative DRS threshold means DRS will only generate recommendations or perform migrations for high priority imbalances (priority 1), reducing migration frequency.

Answer

DRS prioritizes power savings over load balancing, shutting down all hosts regardless of load.

Answer

DRS completely disables all virtual machine migrations, functioning identically to manual mode.

Answer

DRS increases migration frequency to achieve optimal balance within 5 minutes.

Question 14

An administrator notices that a virtual machine has been orphaned in the vSphere inventory. What does it mean when a VM becomes 'orphaned'?

Accepted Answer

The virtual machine is still listed in vCenter inventory, but the ESXi host running it no longer acknowledges or manages its existence.. An orphaned VM is registered in the vCenter inventory, but the ESXi host managing it no longer recognizes it or the host itself has been removed/re-added without proper state synchronization, typically occurring after a host is removed from the cluster or storage registration is lost.

Answer

The VM has been successfully migrated to a public cloud provider.

Answer

The virtual machine's virtual disk files have been permanently deleted from the datastore.

Answer

The VM's operating system license has expired and locked the VM out of the cluster.

Question 15

An administrator notices that a virtual machine's hard disk size needs to be increased. The virtual machine is powered on, and the datastore has ample free space. What is the recommended best practice before expanding the VMDK in the vSphere Client?

Accepted Answer

Take a manual snapshot or backup of the virtual machine as a safeguard before modifying disk capacity.. Taking a manual snapshot or ensuring a recent backup exists before making major hardware configuration or disk expansion changes is standard best practice to protect against unexpected failures.

Answer

Power down the entire ESXi host cluster.

Answer

Format the guest operating system's C: drive using NTFS.

Answer

Disable all firewall rules on the vSphere Distributed Switch.

Question 16

An administrator is troubleshooting an issue where scheduled reports in VCF Operations fail to be emailed to the operations team. After confirming that the SMTP settings are correctly configured in VCF Operations, what underlying authentication mechanism could be causing the failure?

Accepted Answer

Incorrect SMTP authentication credentials or mismatched TLS/SSL encryption port requirements in VCF Operations mail settings.. After confirming SMTP settings are correct, the next most likely cause of email delivery failure is authentication or encryption mismatch: incorrect SMTP credentials (username/password) or a port/TLS mismatch (e.g., using port 25 with STARTTLS required, or port 465 with implicit SSL vs. port 587 with STARTTLS). VCF Operations (formerly vRealize Operations) requires valid SMTP authentication and the correct encryption protocol to relay emails. The other options are unrelated to email delivery.

Answer

Expired NSX Manager API tokens.

Answer

Misconfigured ESXi host vSwitch security policies.

Answer

Expired vCenter machine SSL certificates.

Question 17

An administrator needs to configure an automated alert in VCF Operations that triggers whenever a virtual machine experiences high memory pressure (ballooning or swapping). Where are symptom definitions and alert thresholds customized in VCF Operations?

Accepted Answer

Administration -> Policies -> Policy Library -> Edit active Policy -> Symptom Definitions.. In VCF Operations (formerly Aria Operations / vRealize Operations), symptom definitions and alert thresholds are managed through the policy framework, not through vCenter alarms. The path Administration -> Policies -> Policy Library -> Edit active Policy -> Symptom Definitions is where you customize the metrics, conditions, and thresholds that generate alerts. This decouples alerting logic from vCenter and allows centralized, policy-driven monitoring across the SDDC.

Answer

vCenter Server -> Alarms -> Custom Alarms -> Memory Pressure.

Answer

SDDC Manager -> Monitoring -> Alert Policies.

Answer

NSX Manager -> System -> Fabric -> Alarms.

Question 18

An administrator is preparing to deploy vCenter Server 9.0 in a high-availability architecture. What is the fundamental prerequisite regarding DNS for the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) deployment?

Accepted Answer

Configured Forward (A) and Reverse (PTR) DNS records corresponding to the VCSA FQDN.. vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) deployment requires both forward (A) and reverse (PTR) DNS records that resolve to the VCSA's FQDN before installation. The installer validates name resolution during the pre-check phase, and vCenter services, SSO, and certificate generation all depend on the FQDN resolving correctly in both directions. Without matching PTR records, services like vSphere Client, vCenter Single Sign-On, and the vSphere HA agent can fail to establish trust.

Answer

Static ARP entries mapped on all upstream core routing devices.

Answer

Network Time Protocol (NTP) disabled during the initial installation wizard.

Answer

Active Directory domain controller roles installed directly onto the appliance OS.

Question 19

An administrator is troubleshooting a vSphere cluster where Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) is not migrating virtual machines despite significant CPU imbalances across hosts. Upon reviewing the DRS affinity rules, the administrator notices a conflict. Which rule type takes highest precedence over DRS automated load-balancing migration recommendations?

Accepted Answer

VM-to-Host and VM-to-VM affinity / anti-affinity rules (such as 'Must run on' or 'Keep Virtual Machines Together').. VM-to-Host and VM-to-VM affinity/anti-affinity rules (such as 'Must run on' or 'Keep Virtual Machines Together') take highest precedence over DRS automated load-balancing recommendations. These rules are hard constraints that DRS must honor when placing or migrating VMs, even if it means leaving the cluster imbalanced. They are configured in the cluster's DRS rules section and override any migration recommendation that would violate them.

Answer

vSphere HA admission control percentage limits.

Answer

Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) baselines.

Answer

Storage I/O Control share allocations.

Question 20

An administrator is reviewing active alarms in the vSphere Client and notices an alarm triggered by high datastore latency. To investigate which virtual machine is generating the excessive I/O load, which chart or view in vCF Operations should the administrator inspect?

Accepted Answer

VCF Operations -> Dashboards -> Datastore Performance or Troubleshooting -> Metric view filtered by Disk IOPS/Latency.. VCF Operations (formerly Aria Operations) provides Datastore Performance dashboards and a Troubleshooting/Metric view where you can filter by datastore and then drill into per-VM Disk IOPS and latency metrics. This is the correct place to identify which VM is generating the excessive I/O load behind a datastore latency alarm.

Answer

vSphere Client -> vLCM -> Datastore Compliance View.

Answer

Cloud Builder -> Monitoring -> Storage Inspector.

Answer

NSX Manager -> Diagnostics -> Datastore Latency Test.
