VCP-VVF Troubleshoot And Optimize Practice Test 4 — 15 Questions

Question 1

An administrator is using VMware Aria Operations integrated with vSphere Foundation 9.0 to troubleshoot a performance bottleneck. The dashboard highlights a badge score called 'Stress'. What does the Stress badge indicate for a virtual machine?

Choose an answer to begin — your selection is scored in the full session.

Accepted Answer

It indicates the extent to which the virtual machine has consumed its allocated resources over time relative to its historical demand and current spikes.. The Stress badge in Aria Operations measures the combination of demand and allocation over time, showing whether a VM is actually utilizing its allocated resources or if it is constrained.

Answer

It represents the hardware temperature and thermal load of the physical host running the VM.

Answer

It calculates the risk of a hardware failure based on S.M.A.R.T. disk errors.

Answer

It shows the percentage of CPU ready time caused strictly by host-level overcommitment.

Question 2

A newly deployed virtual machine is unable to communicate with other VMs on the same vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS), although it shares the same port group. What is the most common misconfiguration to check on the vDS port group settings?

Accepted Answer

Verify the VLAN ID configured on the distributed port group matches the physical switch trunk configuration for that network.. VLAN tagging mismatches or incorrect VLAN IDs assigned to the port group are frequent causes of isolation. Alternatively, security policies like Promiscuous Mode or MAC address changes might block traffic, but VLAN configuration is the primary layer-2 requirement.

Answer

Ensure that NetFlow is enabled on the distributed switch uplinks.

Answer

Confirm that Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) is disabled on all host physical adapters.

Answer

Check whether the port group is configured with static binding instead of ephemeral binding.

Question 3

When reviewing vSphere HA settings, an administrator notices that host monitoring is disabled. What is the immediate functional consequence of disabling host monitoring in a vSphere HA cluster?

Accepted Answer

vSphere HA will not automatically detect host failures or restart virtual machines when a host goes down.. Host monitoring in vSphere HA is the mechanism by which the master host exchanges heartbeats with slave hosts over the management network to detect host-level failures. When it is disabled, vSphere HA can no longer determine that a host has failed, so it will not trigger VM restarts on surviving hosts. This effectively neuters the primary HA capability even though the cluster still reports as HA-enabled.

Answer

vSphere DRS is automatically disabled across all cluster nodes.

Answer

Virtual machine guest operating systems will experience unresponsiveness due to lack of VMware Tools heartbeats.

Answer

ESXi management agents (sfcb and hostd) will restart every 60 seconds.

Question 4

An administrator configures a vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS) with NetFlow to monitor traffic patterns. After enabling NetFlow on a port group, no flow records appear in the external collector. What is a common reason for this behavior?

Accepted Answer

The NetFlow collector IP address or UDP collector port is incorrectly configured on the vDS settings, or the sampling rate is set improperly.. NetFlow collectors require correct IP address and UDP port settings on the vDS NetFlow configuration. In addition, the sampling rate must be properly configured (not set to zero or an invalid rate) so that packets are actually sampled and exported.

Answer

NetFlow is only supported on standard virtual switches, not distributed switches.

Answer

NetFlow requires all ESXi hosts in the cluster to be rebooted before flow generation begins.

Answer

Virtual machines must have VMware Tools uninstalled to enable NetFlow packet inspection.

Question 5

An administrator is troubleshooting a storage performance issue on a vSAN 9.0 cluster. The vSAN performance service indicates high object read latency on a specific VMDK. Which command line utility executed on an ESXi host can be used to inspect individual vSAN disk group health and component status directly?

Accepted Answer

esxcli vsan storage list. The command `esxcli vsan storage list` displays detailed information about vSAN storage, including disk groups, their health status, and component status. It is the correct utility to inspect individual vSAN disk group health and component status directly on an ESXi host.

Answer

esxcli storage vmfs extent list

Answer

esxcli vsan cluster get

Answer

esxcli network ip route list

Question 6

An administrator is troubleshooting a snapshot deletion issue where a virtual machine's snapshot consolidate task fails repeatedly with a 'file locked' error. What is the recommended troubleshooting step to resolve this condition?

Accepted Answer

Check for stale backup operations, third-party software locks, or hanging CBT processes holding file locks on the delta VMDK files, and terminate the offending process or backup session.. If a snapshot consolidation fails due to file locks, it is often because a backup application, third-party security agent, or dangling process has a lock on the delta disk vmdk files. Checking active tasks or releasing the lock is required.

Answer

Reboot the vCenter Server appliance to clear guest OS file locks.

Answer

Power on the VM with '-f forceConsolidate' from the ESXi command line.

Answer

Instantly format the datastore using VMFS-6 repair mode.

Question 7

An administrator is troubleshooting an issue where ESXi host syslog messages are not being forwarded to a remote syslog server. Which command or configuration interface should be checked to verify the local syslog target setting on the ESXi host?

Accepted Answer

esxcli system syslog config get. ESXi host syslog settings can be inspected and modified using 'esxcli system syslog config get'.

Answer

esxcli vm kernel log list

Answer

esxcli system account list

Answer

esxcli network firewall get

Question 8

An administrator is troubleshooting a virtual machine that cannot be powered on. The error message states: 'Failed to lock the file'. What does this error typically signify in vSphere?

Accepted Answer

Another ESXi host, a running process, or a stuck task currently holds an exclusive lock on the VM's configuration or disk files.. The 'Failed to lock the file' error in vSphere occurs when the ESXi host cannot obtain an exclusive lock on the VM's configuration file (.vmx) or virtual disk files (.vmdk). This lock is held by another ESXi host (in a shared-storage cluster), a running VM process, or a stuck/orphaned task. The lock mechanism prevents multiple hosts from simultaneously writing to the same VM files, which would cause corruption.

Answer

The VM's virtual disk has reached its maximum size limit of 62TB.

Answer

The virtual machine license has expired, causing the hypervisor to lock the VM files.

Answer

The guest operating system has activated its internal disk encryption lock.

Question 9

An administrator needs to troubleshoot an ESXi host configuration drift across multiple hosts in a vSphere Foundation 9.0 cluster. Which vSphere feature should the administrator use to define a desired state configuration and automatically remediate non-compliant hosts?

Accepted Answer

vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) using cluster images.. vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) utilizes desired state images (or baselines) to manage host software, drivers, and firmware compliance and remediation.

Answer

VMware Aria Operations Compliance policies.

Answer

Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC).

Answer

vSphere HA Admission Control.

Question 10

An administrator is reviewing vSphere HA settings in a cluster and notices that 'Datastore Heartbeating' is enabled. What is the primary purpose of datastore heartbeating in vSphere HA?

Accepted Answer

To distinguish between a host failure and a network isolation/partition event when the host stops responding to network heartbeats.. Datastore heartbeating provides a secondary communication path between the master host and slave hosts using shared datastores when management network heartbeats fail. This allows the master to determine whether a host is truly dead or merely isolated from the management network, preventing unnecessary VM restarts on isolated hosts. It is the mechanism that distinguishes a genuine host failure from a network partition.

Answer

To replicate virtual machine memory pages across remote storage arrays for disaster recovery.

Answer

To accelerate storage read/write performance by caching hot blocks on shared LUNs.

Answer

To automatically migrate VMDK files when datastore free space falls below 10%.

Question 11

An administrator is setting up centralized log management for a vSphere Foundation 9.0 environment. Which VMware product integrates seamlessly with ESXi and vCenter Server to provide comprehensive log analysis, real-time log streaming, and troubleshooting dashboards?

Accepted Answer

VMware Aria Operations for Logs (Log Insight). VMware Aria Operations for Logs (formerly vRealize Log Insight) provides centralized log management, analytics, and troubleshooting for vSphere environments.

Answer

vSphere HA Datastore Protector

Answer

VMware NSX Edge Firewall Manager

Answer

vSphere Lifecycle Manager

Question 12

An administrator is planning storage performance troubleshooting and optimization for an all-flash vSAN 9.0 cluster hosting heavy database workloads. Which THREE best practices should be implemented to ensure optimal vSAN performance? (Choose three.)

Accepted Answer

Ensure dedicated high-speed network infrastructure (10GbE or 25GbE+) with proper MTU (Jumbo Frames, 9000 bytes) for vSAN VMkernel traffic.. Option B is correct because vSAN is a distributed storage system whose performance depends heavily on the network: dedicated 10GbE or 25GbE+ links for vSAN VMkernel traffic prevent contention with other traffic, and enabling Jumbo Frames (MTU 9000) end-to-end reduces packet-processing overhead and improves throughput for heavy database I/O. Option C is correct because keeping the datastore below roughly 70-80% utilization preserves the free space vSAN needs for object rebalancing, snapshot growth, and space reclamation (UNMAP/TRIM), all of which directly affect sustained database performance. Option E is correct because configuring multiple disk groups per ESXi host spreads I/O across multiple cache and capacity devices, increasing aggregate IOPS and queue depth per host rather than bottlenecking on a single cache tier. Option A is wrong because vSAN requires storage policies to define availability, stripe width, and failure tolerance; disabling them removes resiliency and does not improve raw flash access. Option D is wrong because vSAN does not use software iSCSI binding for its internal cache tiers; that concept applies to iSCSI initiator/VMkernel port binding, not to vSAN's native cache architecture.

Answer

Disable all storage policies to allow unconstrained direct access to physical flash media.

Answer

Configure software iSCSI binding for all internal vSAN cache tiers.

Question 13

An administrator is troubleshooting a performance issue where a virtual machine has high CPU wait time. Which TWO esxtop counters or metrics in the CPU view specifically indicate that the VM is waiting for physical CPU scheduling or experiencing CPU contention? (Choose two.)

Accepted Answer

%CSTP (Co-stop percentage). In esxtop's CPU view, %RDY (Ready time percentage) is correct because it measures the percentage of time a vCPU was ready to run but could not be scheduled onto a physical core, which directly indicates CPU contention or scheduling delay. %CSTP (Co-stop percentage) is also correct because it reflects time a vCPU spent ready but unable to run due to its SMP sibling vCPUs not being co-scheduled, a classic symptom of CPU scheduling constraints in multi-vCPU VMs. By contrast, %IDLE simply shows time the vCPU was not doing work and does not indicate contention, %SYS shows time spent in the guest OS kernel rather than waiting for physical CPU, and %USED shows overall CPU consumption without revealing scheduling wait or contention.

Answer

%IDLE (Idle percentage)

Answer

%SYS (System time percentage)

Answer

%USED (CPU usage percentage)

Question 14

When troubleshooting a vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS) configuration, an administrator needs to check which physical network adapters (vmnics) are assigned to specific uplinks on the switch. Where in the vSphere Client should the administrator look?

Accepted Answer

Select the vDS in the inventory, navigate to Configure -> Topology or Uplink port group settings.. Uplink configuration and physical adapter assignments on a vDS are managed under the vDS object -> Configure -> Topology or Uplink port groups / Teaming and Failover settings.

Answer

Check the cluster Quick Stats tab.

Answer

Open the Virtual Machine settings -> Hardware -> Network Adapter.

Answer

Navigate to vCenter Administration -> Deployment -> Network Maps.

Question 15

An administrator notices that a virtual machine's clock is drifting significantly compared to the ESXi host time. Which configuration best ensures accurate time synchronization for the virtual machine in a vSphere environment?

Accepted Answer

Configure NTP inside the guest operating system and appropriately manage VMware Tools time synchronization settings to prevent conflicting time adjustments.. Enabling VMware Tools periodic time synchronization alongside configuring standard NTP inside the guest operating system ensures the VM clock remains accurate without abrupt time jumps.

Answer

Configure the ESXi host BIOS to sync time directly with the virtual machine's vmx file.

Answer

Disable VMware Tools entirely and let the physical switch handle clock synchronization.

Answer

Set vSphere DRS to automatically migrate time-drifted VMs to the fastest CPU host.
