Question 2

A community college is designing an introductory Linux course and wants to teach students about the Linux ecosystem and open source culture. The instructor plans to cover the roles of organizations that support free and open source software. Which two statements accurately describe the roles of such organizations? (Choose two.)

Accepted Answer

The Linux Foundation supports the Linux kernel development by employing key maintainers and organizing collaborative events.. The Linux Foundation and the Free Software Foundation are two central organizations in the Linux and open source ecosystem. The Linux Foundation fosters kernel development and collaboration, while the FSF champions software freedom and produces GNU tools and the GPL. Together they illustrate complementary roles: infrastructure and advocacy versus licensing and philosophy.

Answer

The Linux Mark Institute grants trademarks for the Linux name and licenses it to distributors for a fee.

Answer

The Open Source Initiative sells commercial support contracts for popular Linux distributions such as Ubuntu and Fedora.

Answer

The Apache Software Foundation enforces the GNU General Public License for all projects hosted on its infrastructure.

Question 3

A nonprofit organization wants to release an internal Linux-based tool as open source. The board is concerned about a competitor taking the code, improving it, and selling a closed product without contributing improvements back. Which licensing approach best addresses this concern while still qualifying as open source under the Open Source Initiative definition?

Accepted Answer

Release the tool under a copyleft license such as the GNU GPL version 3, which requires distributed derivative works to remain under the same license with source available.. A copyleft license like the GPLv3 keeps derivatives open: anyone distributing modified versions must use the same license and provide source. The board's concern about a competitor closing the code is mitigated because improvements to covered code must be shared. Permissive and noncommercial licenses either allow closed derivatives or fail OSI criteria, so copyleft is the appropriate approach here.

Answer

Release the tool under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 license, which blocks competitors from using the code commercially.

Answer

Release the tool under a proprietary end-user license agreement that forbids modification, since the OSI recognizes such agreements as open source when source is viewable.

Answer

Release the tool under a permissive license such as the BSD 2-Clause License, which prevents competitors from selling derivative works.

Question 4

Which of the following describes the core philosophy of 'Open Source' as defined by the Open Source Initiative?

Accepted Answer

The source code must be available for modification and redistribution.. The Open Source Initiative's Open Source Definition centers on the freedom to use, modify, and redistribute source code, including derivative works, without discrimination against persons, groups, or fields of endeavor. Option A captures this core requirement that source code must be available and modifiable. Free-of-charge distribution is explicitly not required — OSI-approved licenses may permit commercial sale.

Answer

The software must be provided for free without any charge.

Answer

The code must be written in C or C++.

Answer

The software must only be used for non-profit purposes.

Question 5

A Linux administrator needs to determine if their distribution is based on Debian or RHEL. Which command or path is most indicative of this family?

Accepted Answer

Checking for the existence of /etc/debian_version.. The file /etc/debian_version is a Debian-specific artifact that exists on Debian and its derivatives (Ubuntu, Mint, Kali, etc.) but is absent on RHEL-family systems. Its presence is a reliable, low-level indicator of the Debian package management lineage. RHEL-family systems instead use /etc/redhat-release and /etc/system-release, making /etc/debian_version the clearest single-path discriminator between the two families.

Answer

Checking for the presence of the 'systemd' binary.

Answer

Running the 'uname -a' command.

Answer

Checking for the existence of /etc/sysconfig.

Question 6

An open source developer wants to choose a license that allows their code to be included in proprietary software without requiring the proprietary software to open its source. Which license should they choose?

Accepted Answer

MIT. The MIT License is a permissive license that allows code to be used, modified, and distributed in proprietary software, requiring only attribution and inclusion of the license text. It imposes no copyleft obligation, so derivative works can remain closed-source.

Answer

AGPL

Answer

GPLv3

Answer

Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike

Question 7

When considering a career in Linux system administration, which certification path demonstrates proficiency in managing system-level services and security across diverse distributions?

Question 8

Your company is considering moving from proprietary software to open source solutions. Which aspect of the GPL license is most restrictive regarding the distribution of modified code?

Accepted Answer

You must release the source code of any derivative works if you distribute the binaries.. The GPL's core copyleft obligation is that if you distribute binaries of a derivative work, you must also make the complete corresponding source code available under the same GPL terms. This 'viral' requirement is what makes the GPL more restrictive than permissive licenses like MIT or BSD when distributing modified code.

Answer

You must contribute all modifications back to the original project maintainer.

Answer

You are not allowed to modify the source code for internal business use.

Answer

You are forbidden from selling any software that uses GPL code.

Question 9

An administrator is comparing package management systems. Which tool is primarily used on RHEL-based distributions for resolving dependencies and downloading packages?

Accepted Answer

DNF. DNF (Dandified YUM) is the default high-level package manager on modern RHEL-based distributions (RHEL 8+, Fedora, CentOS Stream, Rocky, AlmaLinux). It resolves dependencies using the libsolv library and downloads packages from configured repositories, replacing the older YUM tool while maintaining CLI compatibility.

Question 10

Your organization wants to standardize its servers on a single distribution to streamline patch management. Which of the following is an advantage of using a major distribution like Ubuntu LTS or RHEL?

Accepted Answer

They provide predictable support lifecycles and stable software versions.. Major enterprise distributions such as Ubuntu LTS and RHEL offer long, predictable support lifecycles (e.g., 5-10 years) with stable, tested software versions, which is exactly what organizations need for consistent patch management. This stability reduces the risk of regressions from frequent upstream changes. The other options describe characteristics that are either false or undesirable for production servers.

Answer

They allow administrators to compile the kernel from source code during every boot.

Answer

They always include the latest experimental features from the Linux kernel.

Answer

They are guaranteed to be smaller in size compared to community distributions.

Question 11

A startup company is deciding between a Community-driven distribution and an Enterprise distribution. Which scenario best justifies choosing an Enterprise distribution?

Accepted Answer

The company needs long-term stability and guaranteed vendor support for critical infrastructure.. Enterprise distributions (e.g., RHEL, SLES) provide long-term support lifecycles, certified hardware/software stacks, and vendor-backed SLAs — exactly what critical infrastructure needs. A startup running production systems that cannot tolerate unscheduled breakage should choose an Enterprise distro to get guaranteed security patches and support channels. This directly matches the requirement for stability and vendor accountability.

Answer

The development team wants zero cost for the distribution and documentation.

Answer

The company wants to actively contribute to the kernel source code directly.

Answer

The project requires the absolute latest software features released daily.

Question 12

In the context of the open source community, what is the significance of the term 'fork'?

Accepted Answer

A project that diverges from the original source to move in a new direction.. In open source, a fork is a copy of a project's source code that diverges from the original to pursue a different direction, often due to disagreements or different goals. The forked project maintains its own development, governance, and release cycle while preserving the original license terms. This is distinct from a branch, which is a temporary divergence within the same repository.

Answer

A type of software license that forbids distribution.

Answer

A way to kill a process in the Linux terminal.

Answer

A method for merging two disparate codebases into one.

Question 13

What is the primary role of a 'Linux Distribution'?

Accepted Answer

To package the kernel with user-space tools and manage software updates.. A Linux distribution bundles the upstream Linux kernel with user-space utilities (GNU coreutils, init system, package manager, libraries) and provides a mechanism for installing and updating software. It is the packaging and integration layer that makes the raw kernel usable, not a kernel development project.

Answer

To provide technical support for proprietary hardware manufacturers.

Answer

To develop the Linux kernel from scratch.

Answer

To force all users to use a single command line interface.

Question 14

A system administrator needs to check the version of the Linux kernel installed on a production server. Which command is most appropriate?

Accepted Answer

uname -r. The `uname -r` command prints the kernel release version, which is exactly what the administrator needs. `uname` is a standard Unix/Linux utility that displays system information, and the `-r` flag specifically outputs the kernel release. This is the most direct and appropriate command for checking the kernel version on a production server.

Answer

check-kernel

Answer

ls /boot

Answer

cat /etc/version

Question 15

A developer is writing an application that performs heavy system-level calls. Why would they choose to use Linux for this development?

Accepted Answer

Because the source code is transparent, allowing for deep optimization and debugging.. Linux's open-source nature means developers can inspect, modify, and rebuild the kernel and system libraries, which is invaluable for debugging system-level calls, profiling performance, and optimizing code paths. This transparency enables deep visibility that closed-source operating systems cannot offer without vendor support.

Answer

Because it is the only operating system that supports multi-threading.

Answer

Because Linux has a graphical user interface that is mandatory for all applications.

Answer

Because Linux only runs on x86 hardware.

Question 16

Which of the following is considered a 'downstream' consumer of the Linux kernel?

Accepted Answer

An Ubuntu Linux distribution. A downstream consumer is an entity that takes the upstream Linux kernel source and builds derivative products from it. Ubuntu takes kernel source from kernel.org (upstream), applies its own patches, and ships it as a distribution — making it a classic downstream consumer.

Question 17

A firm wants to contribute back to the open source community to improve their internal Linux tools. What is the best practice for submitting these improvements?

Accepted Answer

Submit patches or pull requests to the original project's repository.. The best practice for contributing improvements back to an open source project is to submit patches or pull requests to the original project's repository. This allows the maintainers to review, test, and merge the changes, ensuring the improvements benefit the entire community and are maintained in future releases. It also respects the project's governance and licensing.

Answer

Post the code on a private internal company wiki.

Answer

Rename the software and sell it as a proprietary product.

Answer

Fork the code and never release the changes publicly.

Question 18

You are managing a Linux server running an application that uses libraries licensed under the LGPL (Lesser General Public License). What is the primary implication of this license?

Accepted Answer

You can link your proprietary code to the library without open-sourcing the proprietary code.. The LGPL (Lesser General Public License) allows you to link proprietary code against LGPL-licensed libraries without requiring you to open-source your proprietary application. This is the key difference from the GPL, which would require the entire derivative work to be GPL-licensed. The LGPL is designed to encourage the use of free libraries in proprietary software.

Answer

You must release your proprietary application's source code if you link it against the library.

Answer

You are prohibited from using the library in any commercial product.

Answer

You must pay a royalty fee for every installation of the software.

Question 19

A developer is looking for a career that involves 'DevOps' in a Linux environment. Which skill set is most relevant for this role?

Accepted Answer

Automating infrastructure deployment and managing CI/CD pipelines.. DevOps in a Linux environment centers on automating infrastructure provisioning and managing continuous integration/continuous delivery pipelines, typically using tools like Ansible, Terraform, Jenkins, GitLab CI, and Kubernetes. Question 20

When evaluating Linux distributions, what distinguishes a 'rolling release' distribution from a 'fixed release' distribution?

Accepted Answer

Rolling releases provide continuous updates, while fixed releases use a versioned lifecycle.. A rolling release distribution provides continuous updates to the latest software versions without distinct version numbers, while a fixed release distribution has periodic versioned releases with defined support lifecycles. This is the key distinction.

Answer

Fixed releases are only available for server environments.

Answer

Rolling releases require a complete wipe and reinstall for every update.

Answer

Rolling releases are always more secure than fixed releases.
