Week 11— Essential Commands · Networking · Service Configuration · Storage Management

Essential Commands
Essential Commands is 20% of the LFCS and covers day-to-day Linux administration at the shell: files, text, processes, permissions, storage and networking. The exam is performance-based, so you work in a live terminal on real systems rather than answering multiple-choice questions, and each task is scored by inspecting the resulting system state.
📅 Days 73–77🎯 ~8 questions/day⚖ 20% of exam- ✓Navigating and manipulating files with ls, cp, mv, rm, find and tar
- ✓Searching and editing text using grep, sed, awk and vi
- ✓Managing processes and jobs with ps, top, kill, systemctl
- Study →
Networking
The Networking domain of the LFCS exam covers configuring and troubleshooting Linux network interfaces, routing, DNS resolution, firewalling, and remote access. You will perform hands-on tasks in a live environment: setting static addresses with ip or nmcli, editing Netplan or ifcfg files, opening ports with firewalld or ufw, and verifying connectivity using ss, dig, and ping.
📅 Days 73–77🎯 ~4 questions/day⚖ 25% of exam- ✓Configure static IPv4/IPv6 addresses and routes using ip, nmcli, or Netplan
- ✓Manage hostname resolution via /etc/hosts, /etc/resolv.conf, and systemd-resolved
- ✓Control inbound traffic with firewalld zones, firewall-cmd, or ufw rules

Service Configuration
Service Configuration is 12% of the LFCS and covers managing systemd units, networking, and core network services on Linux. The exam tests this through live performance-based tasks: you start, enable, mask, or troubleshoot units with systemctl, configure hostname and DNS resolution, and set up services such as SSH, HTTP, NFS, or chrony, then confirm they persist across reboot.
📅 Days 73–77🎯 ~8 questions/day⚖ 12% of exam- ✓Starting, stopping, enabling, and masking systemd units with systemctl and journalctl
- ✓Configuring persistent network settings, hostname, and name resolution on Linux
- ✓Setting up and securing SSH server access, keys, and sshd_config options

Storage Management
Storage Management is 20% of the LFCS exam, covering how Linux presents, partitions, formats, mounts, and shares block storage. You work hands-on in a live terminal: creating GPT and MBR partition tables, making ext4, XFS, and swap filesystems, editing /etc/fstab with UUIDs, assembling LVM and RAID arrays, and exporting NFS or Samba shares that persist across reboots.
📅 Days 73–77🎯 ~7 questions/day⚖ 20% of exam- ✓Partitioning disks with fdisk, gdisk, and parted using GPT or MBR labels
- ✓Creating and tuning ext4, XFS, and swap filesystems with mkfs and mkswap
- ✓Mounting by UUID in /etc/fstab and verifying with findmnt and mount -a
