CTFL-v4 Hard Questions — 25 Difficult Questions

Question 1

Which TWO of the following statements accurately describe the role of testers in a modern SDLC?

Accepted Answer

Testers contribute by helping to define the acceptance criteria for user stories.. Modern testing emphasizes collaboration and early involvement. Testers serve as quality advocates who help define 'done' and verify that requirements are testable. By participating in reviews and planning, they facilitate a shared understanding of quality across the entire team, which is essential for successfully delivering software in iterative and incremental development environments.

Answer

Testers are solely responsible for all quality activities within the project.

Answer

Testers should focus exclusively on dynamic testing to prove the system works.

Answer

Testers should avoid participating in code reviews to remain unbiased.

Question 2

Refer to the exhibit. Given the current test progress report, which action should the test manager take to ensure the project remains on track for the final release deadline?

Accepted Answer

Investigate the blocked test cases to resolve dependencies and continue execution progress.. The report shows 20 blocked tests and 50 failed tests, with 150 cases remaining. The test manager must address the blocked items immediately, as these prevent full verification of the system. This demonstrates effective test management by prioritizing blockers, which are often external dependencies, to ensure the remaining 150 tests can be executed without further delays before the deadline.

Answer

Immediately increase the test execution velocity by adding more manual testers to the project.

Answer

Ignore the failed test cases for now and focus entirely on executing the remaining untested cases.

Answer

Update the test plan to reflect a lower number of total test cases for the final release.

Question 3

According to the ISTQB CTFL v4.0 syllabus, which TWO of the following statements are characteristic of black-box test techniques? (Select TWO)

Accepted Answer

Test cases can be designed before the software is implemented, supporting early test analysis and design.. Black-box test techniques, also known as specification-based techniques, derive test cases directly from requirements, models, or specifications without looking at the internal structure of the code. Testers utilize these methods to find discrepancies between expected and actual behavior, making them highly effective for validating functional completeness from an end-user perspective.

Answer

Test cases are derived from the internal code structure, architecture, or detailed design of the software component.

Answer

The primary measure of test thoroughness is code statement or decision coverage achieved during execution.

Answer

Testers must have programming skills and access to the source code repository to successfully execute the technique.

Question 4

A software project has a high cost of failure. Which testing approach should the test manager prioritize to minimize risk?

Accepted Answer

Risk-based testing.. In high-risk projects, risk-based testing is the most effective strategy. By identifying the most critical features and the areas most likely to fail, testers can allocate their limited time and resources to the areas that matter most. This ensures that the most severe defects are caught early, reducing the overall business impact and project risk. This prioritization is central to effective test management in professional settings.

Answer

Exhaustive testing of all features.

Answer

Testing only the UI components.

Answer

Automated regression testing only.

Question 5

Refer to the exhibit. An automated test suite produces these logs. Which testing phase is most likely to catch this type of defect, and why?

Accepted Answer

Integration testing, because it validates module communication.. This log indicates a recurring connection timeout, which is a classic symptom of poor integration between the application and an external service. While unit tests might pass if they use mocks, integration testing is designed to verify the actual communication path. Catching this during integration testing ensures that environmental dependencies and real network configurations are validated before the system moves into the more complex system testing phase.

Answer

Component testing, because it verifies the code logic.

Answer

Acceptance testing, because it tests business requirements.

Answer

Static testing, because it reviews the source code.

Question 6

Refer to the exhibit. During static testing, a tester identifies that the 'lockout_duration_mins' is set to 15. What is the most likely risk identified by the tester?

Accepted Answer

The policy needs to be reviewed against security requirements to determine if it is appropriate.. A static review of security policies identifies vulnerabilities before they are deployed. A 15-minute lockout might be too short for effective brute-force protection or too long for legitimate user usability, depending on the risk model. Identifying these policy gaps during the design phase allows the team to adjust security settings to balance security and usability without requiring costly code changes post-deployment.

Answer

The password length requirement is too short and will cause an execution error.

Answer

The lockout duration is a configuration parameter that doesn't impact security.

Answer

The system will fail to compile because the policy is written in JSON format.

Question 7

A tester is performing risk-based testing. They decide to prioritize testing of the payment processing module over the user profile customization module. Which ISTQB principle are they applying?

Accepted Answer

Testing is context-dependent. This demonstrates the principle of 'Testing is context-dependent' and 'Risk-based testing.' By prioritizing critical modules like payments over minor ones like profiles, the tester is focusing their limited time and effort where the risk of failure is highest and the potential impact is greatest. This approach maximizes the effectiveness of the testing effort, ensuring that the most vital parts of the system are thoroughly verified before release.

Answer

Defect clustering

Answer

Pesticide paradox

Answer

Absence of errors fallacy

Question 8

Which THREE of the following factors influence the test strategy of a project?

Accepted Answer

The risk level of the project features.. Test strategy is highly variable and depends on multiple project-specific factors. These include the risk assessment, the development methodology, the budget, the complexity of the system, and regulatory requirements. Understanding these factors allows test managers to tailor their approach, ensuring the testing effort is proportionate to the project's needs. This adaptability is key to balancing quality, time, and cost, which are the primary constraints of any professional software engineering project.

Answer

The personal preference of the individual developer.

Answer

The number of lines of code in the project.

Question 9

Refer to the exhibit. A tester observes these logs during a load test. How does this relate to the 'Testing shows the presence of defects' principle?

Accepted Answer

The test identified a defect but does not guarantee the absence of other defects.. This exhibit demonstrates that testing reveals specific failure points under load. The defect (NullPointerException) was triggered by a specific condition (latency). This principle is crucial because it reminds us that while we can observe defects, we cannot state that other, non-triggered paths are error-free. It highlights the importance of environmental monitoring and dynamic analysis in uncovering issues that only surface under stress, reinforcing the need for continuous, context-aware testing strategies.

Answer

The test successfully proved that no other defects exist in the PaymentGateway.

Answer

The test confirms that the system is not capable of handling any production load.

Answer

The test proved that the database latency caused the NullPointerException.

Question 10

Which THREE of the following are key benefits of static testing?

Accepted Answer

Detection of defects before any code is executed.. Static testing is highly effective at identifying defects early, which is essential for minimizing project costs. By reviewing documents, code, and models without execution, teams find ambiguities and errors that are otherwise hidden. This process also improves communication between stakeholders and developers, ensuring that the software's design is robust and that the final implementation will align with expectations and quality standards.

Answer

Verification of performance under high user load.

Answer

Elimination of the need for dynamic testing entirely.

Question 11

Which THREE factors should a tester consider when applying the 'Testing is context-dependent' principle?

Accepted Answer

The level of risk associated with the software application.. Context-dependence dictates that testing approaches must adapt to specific organizational and project variables. Factors like safety-criticality, development methodology (Agile vs. Waterfall), and regulatory constraints dictate the required rigor and documentation. A tester must analyze these variables to avoid a 'one-size-fits-all' approach. Recognizing these factors ensures the testing effort is proportionate to the risks, compliance requirements, and the specific technological environment, resulting in a more effective and efficient quality assurance process overall.

Answer

The programming language used for the development.

Answer

The number of hours the test team worked last week.

Question 12

Refer to the exhibit. If a tester decides to test only the 'admin_override' field because it seems the most critical, which ISTQB principle are they ignoring?

Accepted Answer

Exhaustive testing is impossible.. By focusing only on one field, the tester ignores the 'Exhaustive testing is impossible' principle and the need for a balanced approach. Testing only high-risk areas is a risk-based strategy, but ignoring all other input combinations or field interactions limits the thoroughness required to find defects. A good tester uses risk-based prioritization to ensure critical areas get focus while still providing sufficient coverage across all system inputs to ensure overall system reliability.

Answer

Testing is context-dependent.

Answer

Defect clustering.

Answer

Testing shows the presence of defects.

Question 13

Refer to the exhibit. During the system testing phase, a tester notices the authentication service frequently fails under high load. Based on the provided policy configuration, what is the most appropriate testing action to take next?

Accepted Answer

Conduct a performance test focused on the auth service interaction.. The tester must analyze the interaction between the configuration settings and the system behavior. With a high retry limit and a relatively short timeout, the system might be overloading itself by repeatedly attempting to connect to the authentication service. This scenario highlights why system testing must evaluate how environmental configurations impact system stability, especially when external dependencies like OAuth2 services are involved in the process.

Answer

Immediately request a code change to the authentication module.

Answer

Increase the timeout value to 600ms and retry the test.

Answer

Report a critical defect for the OAuth2 protocol implementation.

Question 14

Refer to the exhibit. A software testing team is designing test cases based on a decision table derived from the provided JSON business rule policy. How should the tester handle the 'coupon_valid' condition when designing tests for 'is_member = true' and 'cart_total > 100.00' if the rule engine ignores coupons entirely under these specific criteria?

Accepted Answer

Design a single test case using a 'don't care' notation for coupon_valid since its state does not alter the outcome.. When a condition does not affect the outcome for a specific combination of other conditions, it is represented as an indifference or don't care value in decision tables. This reduces the number of redundant test cases while maintaining complete logical coverage of the active rule.

Answer

Create two separate test cases: one where coupon_valid is true and one where coupon_valid is false.

Answer

Omit the cart_total variable from the test design entirely because the membership status takes precedence.

Answer

Automatically fail the test case because the JSON policy contains a conflicting boolean value for coupons.

Question 15

Refer to the exhibit. As a tester, what is your primary takeaway from this log during test design for future regression cycles?

Accepted Answer

The test design should include timeout and retry logic verification. The log indicates a recurring instability in the database link, which persisted despite retries. During test design, you should incorporate this finding by creating a specific test condition to handle timeout scenarios gracefully. This allows you to verify that the application handles 'Database Unavailable' states without crashing, improving the robustness of the system design and ensuring that future releases can handle intermittent connectivity issues without catastrophic failure.

Answer

The test suite should be run in a different environment

Answer

The payment module is ready for final release

Answer

The retry count should be increased from 3 to 10

Question 16

Refer to the exhibit. What is the minimum number of test cases required to achieve 100% decision coverage for this logic?

Accepted Answer

3. Decision coverage requires that every outcome of every decision (true and false) is exercised. Here, we have two primary 'if/else' decisions. To cover the first decision (age < 18), we need one test <18 and one test >=18. To cover the second decision (age >= 18 && age < 65), we need one test within that range and one outside. Combining these, we ensure all outcomes are reached, preventing logic errors in classification.

Question 17

Which THREE of the following are benefits of using a Test Management Tool (TMT)?

Accepted Answer

Centralized storage for test plans, cases, and defect logs.. Test Management Tools significantly improve the efficiency of testing activities by automating repetitive tasks, centralizing information, and facilitating reporting. In a professional testing environment, manual tracking is prone to error and difficult to scale. Using a TMT ensures consistency, provides real-time visibility into project health, and makes it easier for the test manager to demonstrate compliance with quality standards to stakeholders.

Answer

Automatic writing of business requirements documents.

Answer

Guaranteed 100% bug-free production software.

Question 18

Refer to the exhibit. Which decision table configuration provides the most comprehensive test coverage for this policy?

Accepted Answer

Test cases for Admin, User (in-hours), and User (out-of-hours).. Decision tables are excellent for testing complex business logic. By mapping all combinations of inputs (role, time, access), we ensure that each outcome is correctly implemented. A comprehensive table includes all valid combinations and handles edge cases, such as 'User' role outside of office hours. This systematic approach ensures that no logical path is overlooked, preventing security flaws where users might access restricted areas due to missing or overlapping logical conditions.

Answer

Test cases for Admin and User only.

Answer

Test cases for all roles at 10:00, 12:00, and 14:00.

Answer

Test cases for Admin at all hours.

Question 19

During state transition testing for an ATM, you identify three states: 'Idle', 'Card Inserted', and 'PIN Verified'. If a user enters an incorrect PIN three times, the system transitions from 'PIN Verified' to 'Card Ejected'. What is the primary purpose of identifying the 'Card Ejected' state in your design?

Accepted Answer

To validate the transition logic triggered by a specific event sequence.. State transition testing is vital for systems that exhibit different behaviors based on previous events. Identifying the 'Card Ejected' state ensures that security protocols are followed correctly under failure conditions. Testing these transitions confirms the system returns to a safe state, preventing unauthorized access. This is crucial for systems where history-dependent behavior dictates the outcome of future user actions, as errors in state management can lead to critical security vulnerabilities.

Answer

To verify that the system can handle concurrent users.

Answer

To ensure that invalid states are unreachable.

Answer

To test the performance of the ATM hardware.

Question 20

Which THREE items are typically included in a formal Test Summary Report?

Accepted Answer

The final status of the test execution.. A Test Summary Report provides the final evaluation of the testing phase for stakeholders. It must summarize the actual results, highlight any deviations from the plan, and provide a clear recommendation based on the testing outcomes. This document is crucial for decision-making regarding the release of the software, as it provides a record of what was tested, what was found, and the final quality status of the system.

Answer

The salary of each tester on the project.

Answer

The full source code of the application.
