156-215.81.20 SIC and SmartConsole Management — Timed 25 Questions

Question 1

An administrator is attempting to reset SIC between a Security Management Server (SMS) and a Security Gateway. After running 'cpconfig' and setting the activation key, the administrator receives a 'SIC Status: Unknown' message. What is the most likely cause?

25 minute time limit — choose an answer to begin.

Accepted Answer

The Security Gateway cannot resolve the FQDN of the Management Server.. The 'SIC Status: Unknown' indicates that the Management Server cannot initiate a secure channel because the Gateway's internal certificate authority or trust relationship is mismatched or blocked. This is a critical security mechanism; if the trust anchor is not recognized, the SMS cannot push security policies or receive logs, effectively isolating the gateway from the centralized management plane. Resolving this requires verifying the time synchronization and network connectivity on port 18211.

Answer

The Gateway is running an outdated version of Gaia OS.

Answer

The activation key contains special characters not supported by the shell.

Answer

The Policy Server service on the Management Server is disabled.

Question 2

Refer to the exhibit. An administrator encounters this error when attempting to install a policy. What is the underlying cause?

Accepted Answer

The system clock on the Security Gateway is significantly drifted.. Certificate Revocation Lists (CRL) are used by gateways to verify the validity of the Management Server's certificate. When the CRL expires, the gateway can no longer trust the certificate issued by the SMS, causing the SIC channel to drop for security reasons. This is a common maintenance issue; administrators must ensure the SMS can access CRL distribution points or manually update the local CRL repository to restore trust.

Answer

The license on the Security Gateway has expired.

Answer

The Management Server has a revoked certificate in its database.

Answer

The SIC password requires a mandatory update.

Question 3

Which process is primarily responsible for handling SIC communication on a Check Point Security Gateway?

Accepted Answer

cpd. The 'cpd' (Check Point Daemon) is the core process that handles communication between the Management Server and the gateway. It manages the secure internal communication channel, handles the certificate exchange, and processes policy installation requests. Understanding this dependency is vital for troubleshooting, as a failure in the cpd process will result in total loss of management control, even if network routing is perfectly functional.

Answer

fwd

Answer

fw_full

Answer

cpm

Question 4

When a Management Server is replaced, what must be done to maintain SIC with existing Gateways?

Accepted Answer

Import the existing ICA (Internal Certificate Authority) from the old server.. When replacing a management server, the SIC trust must be re-established or the CA certificate must be migrated. If the old management server's database is imported, the same internal CA is used. If starting fresh, the 'sic_reset' command must be used on gateways to allow them to trust the new management server's certificate, ensuring the integrity of future administrative traffic.

Answer

Perform a 'sic_reset' on the Management Server only.

Answer

Reboot the gateways to force a new key exchange.

Answer

Upgrade the gateway firmware to the latest version.

Question 5

An administrator is troubleshooting SIC issues between a Security Management Server and a remote gateway. Which TWO actions would help verify the connection status?

Accepted Answer

Run 'cpconfig' and check the 'Secure Internal Communication' menu.. Verifying SIC connectivity requires checking both the logical status and the network reachability. The 'cp_mgmt_cli' or 'cpprod_util' tools provide deep insights into the internal trust status. Network connectivity tests on the specific SIC ports (18211) confirm that the firewall or ISP is not blocking the management traffic. These two steps provide the most accurate picture of whether a connection failure is due to configuration or transport.

Answer

Run 'cphaprob stat' on the gateway.

Answer

Execute 'fw ctl debug' on the gateway.

Answer

Check the 'syslog' file for kernel crashes.

Question 6

Which file on the gateway stores the SIC certificate and trust information?

Accepted Answer

$FWDIR/conf/sic_cert.p12. The SIC certificate and private key are stored within the Check Point internal database, specifically inside the 'conf' directory. These files are highly sensitive; they represent the identity of the gateway. If these files are compromised or corrupted, the identity of the gateway is effectively stolen, which is why Check Point uses strict access controls on the $FWDIR/conf directory to prevent unauthorized tampering.

Answer

/etc/shadow

Answer

/var/log/cpd.elg

Answer

$FWDIR/database/objects.C

Question 7

Which THREE conditions are required for a successful SIC reset on a gateway?

Accepted Answer

The SIC activation key must match exactly on both sides.. A successful SIC reset requires the gateway to be in a state where it can accept a new key, the management server to be reachable for the exchange, and the activation key to be identical on both sides. These three factors ensure that the handshake is initiated, the path is open, and the authentication matches, effectively re-establishing the trust link between the gateway and management.

Answer

The gateway must be in a 'Stateful Inspection' bypass mode.

Answer

The gateway must have a valid, unexpired license.

Question 8

Which utility allows an administrator to check the SIC trust status from the Management Server CLI?

Accepted Answer

cpprod_util CPPROD_GetValue. The 'cp_mgmt_cli' or various 'cpprod_util' commands allow administrators to query the status of managed gateways. Checking status from the management side is essential for bulk operations where an administrator needs to identify which gateways have broken trust across a large environment. This prevents the need to log into every single gateway to perform manual status checks.

Answer

fw stat

Answer

cpinfo

Answer

cphaprob stat

Question 9

Refer to the exhibit. An administrator gets 'Connection refused'. What is the most likely culprit?

Accepted Answer

A firewall rule is dropping port 18211 traffic.. A 'Connection refused' error typically implies that the TCP connection is being actively rejected by the target server or a device in the path. In the context of SIC, this means the port 18211 is either closed on the management server or blocked by a local firewall rule on the gateway or an intermediate network device, preventing the handshake from even initiating.

Answer

The ICA certificate is expired.

Answer

The SIC activation key is incorrect.

Answer

The Management Server has a corrupted SIC database.

Question 10

How can an administrator improve the security of SIC in a production environment?

Accepted Answer

Use a dedicated, isolated management network.. Enforcing strong password policies for the activation key is a start, but the best practice is to move towards automated certificate management. By using secure, isolated management networks and ensuring that no unauthorized personnel have root access to the gateways, the risk of SIC hijacking is minimized. Keeping the system updated ensures that any vulnerabilities in the SIC protocol implementation are patched.

Answer

Change the activation key every 30 days.

Answer

Disable the ICA on the Management Server.

Answer

Use simple passwords for easy recovery.

Question 11

What happens if the 'sic_reset' command is executed on a gateway without performing the corresponding steps on the Management Server?

Accepted Answer

The management server will reject all future policy installs.. Executing 'sic_reset' on the gateway wipes the local SIC identity. However, the management server still has the old certificate associated with that gateway. Consequently, the management server will reject all future connection attempts from the gateway because the certificate presented by the gateway no longer matches the one stored in the management server's database, leading to a complete management lockout.

Answer

The Management Server automatically deletes the old entry.

Answer

The gateway remains manageable for 24 hours.

Answer

The gateway reverts to its factory default settings.

Question 12

An administrator wants to view all SIC-related logs on the Management Server. Which file should be checked?

Accepted Answer

$FWDIR/log/cpm.elg. The 'cpm.elg' log file is the primary repository for messages generated by the Management Server's core process. This process handles the high-level logic of SIC management, including certificate issuance and policy distribution. Monitoring this file is the standard way to debug SIC-related issues at the management level, as it logs the success or failure of the cryptographic handshakes.

Answer

/var/log/messages

Answer

$FWDIR/log/fw.log

Answer

/var/log/audit.log

Question 13

An administrator is attempting to establish Secure Internal Communication (SIC) between a newly deployed Security Gateway and the Management Server, but the initialization fails with a certificate untrusted error. What is the most likely cause of this failure?

Accepted Answer

The One-Time Password entered during the configuration did not match the string generated on the Management Server object.. SIC relies heavily on trusted root certificates issued by the Security Management Server during the initial trust object creation. If the underlying One-Time Password is mistyped or network connectivity blocks the specific secure control connections on TCP port 18491, the internal CA cannot properly authenticate and sign the gateway certificate.

Answer

The Security Management Server is using TCP port 18190 for SIC traffic instead of the required port.

Answer

The administrator forgot to install the Access Control policy onto the new gateway before initializing the SIC state.

Answer

SmartConsole was left open in read-write mode by another administrator while the SIC reset command was executed.

Question 14

Refer to the exhibit. An administrator attempts to establish SIC with a gateway and encounters the displayed error output from the management server. What is the most effective troubleshooting step to resolve this issue?

Accepted Answer

Re-initialize SIC on the gateway using cpconfig and ensure the activation key matches the SmartConsole object configuration exactly.. The error explicitly indicates a cryptographic mismatch during the certificate exchange or password validation phase. Verifying the certificate status and resetting the SIC initialization key on both ends guarantees that the internal Certificate Authority can successfully issue a new trusted certificate.

Answer

Verify network routing and ensure TCP port 256 is open between the management server and the gateway.

Answer

Reinstall the Access Control policy on all participating Security Gateways in the enterprise domain.

Answer

Restart the fwm daemon on the Security Management Server to clear cached certificate revocation lists.

Question 15

An administrator successfully establishes Secure Internal Communication between a Security Management Server and a new Gateway. However, policy installation fails immediately with a generic trust error. Which step resolves this issue?

Accepted Answer

Initialize SIC again in cpconfig on the Gateway, then reset the SIC state in the Gateway object within SmartConsole.. Policy installation fails when management and gateway trust states desynchronize after initial SIC creation. Re-initializing SIC via cpconfig on the gateway and re-establishing the trust object inside SmartConsole forces full certificate renewal. This ensures cryptographic handshake parameters match during database compilation.

Answer

Restart the Security Management Server database process using the cpstop and cpstart commands.

Answer

Upgrade the Security Gateway to the exact build version of the Security Management Server.

Answer

Run the fw unloadlocal command on the Security Gateway to clear out the existing active security policy.

Question 16

An administrator is preparing to establish Secure Internal Communication between a management server and a gateway located across a heavily restricted network segment. Which TWO requirements must be fully satisfied for successful communication over TCP port 1849? (Choose TWO)

Accepted Answer

Unimpeded bidirectional TCP connectivity on port 1849 between the Security Management Server and the Security Gateway.. Secure Internal Communication depends heavily on bidirectional TCP connectivity over port 1849 and valid certificate authentication backed by internal root authorities. Both ends of the communication tunnel must resolve IP addresses accurately and permit the initial handshake packets without interception by intermediate security controls.

Answer

An active subscription to the Check Point UserCheck portal license on the target Security Gateway.

Answer

Pre-configured explicit static network routes pointing directly to the Check Point Cloud Services infrastructure.

Answer

Successful establishment of an IPsec VPN tunnel prior to initializing the internal communication daemon.

Question 17

An administrator needs to reset Secure Internal Communication between a Security Gateway and the Management Server due to a suspected certificate compromise. Which TWO actions must be performed to successfully complete this reset procedure? (Choose TWO)

Accepted Answer

Run the cpconfig utility on the Security Gateway and select the option to reset SIC.. Resetting Secure Internal Communication requires both resetting the internal trust object inside SmartConsole and running the configuration utility directly on the target gateway appliance. Both steps ensure old internal certificates are completely revoked and regenerated using a fresh activation key.

Answer

Reboot the Security Gateway immediately after deleting the gateway object from the SmartConsole database.

Answer

Manually delete the certificate revocation list database file from the management server root directory using expert mode.

Answer

Run the fw unloadlocal command on the management server to clear active database policies.

Question 18

An administrator is attempting to establish SIC between a Security Management Server (SMS) and a new Security Gateway, but the connection status remains 'Unknown'. Which command should the administrator run on the Security Gateway to verify that the internal certificate authority is reachable and the SIC process can initiate?

Accepted Answer

cpconfig. The 'cpconfig' utility provides a menu-driven interface to manage critical SIC settings, including resetting the SIC state and verifying communication. In modern environments, ensuring that the gateway can resolve the SMS IP and has the correct time synchronization is vital. Using 'cpconfig' allows the administrator to re-initialize the secure internal communication handshake, which is the foundational step for any policy deployment and log forwarding within the Check Point architecture.

Answer

cpstat fw -statistics

Answer

cphaprob stat

Answer

fw ctl debug

Question 19

An administrator is troubleshooting a failed SIC connection after a management server migration. Which TWO actions must be performed to successfully re-establish trust between the Security Management Server and the gateway? (Choose two)

Accepted Answer

Run 'cpconfig' on the Security Gateway to reset the SIC state.. Re-establishing SIC requires both ends of the connection to agree on a shared secret and trust each other's certificates. The administrator must initiate the reset on the gateway and then provide the matching activation key in the SmartConsole gateway object. This ensures that the cryptographic handshake is synchronized and the new management IP address is properly recognized by the Security Gateway security policy.

Answer

Enable 'Legacy Mode' communication in the SmartConsole gateway properties.

Answer

Update the gateway's OS license via the Gaia web portal.

Answer

Reboot the Management Server immediately after the reset.

Question 20

A large enterprise has a Security Management Server (SMS) managing multiple Security Gateways. The administrator needs to replace the SMS with a new server due to hardware failure. The administrator restores the configuration from a backup onto the new SMS, including the ICA and all gateway objects. However, after the new SMS is operational, all gateways show SIC status as 'Unknown'. The administrator verifies that the gateways can ping the new SMS and that no firewall rules are blocking traffic. What is the most likely reason for the SIC failure?

Accepted Answer

The new SMS's ICA certificate does not match the gateways' trusted CA, because the backup did not include the ICA private key.. When replacing a Management Server, it is critical to restore the Internal Certificate Authority (ICA) private key and certificate. If the backup does not include the ICA private key, the new server will have a different ICA, and gateways will not trust it, causing SIC to fail. The other options are less likely because SIC certificates are not IP-bound, expiration is not indicated, and a SIC reset is not needed if the ICA is correctly restored.

Answer

The new SMS has a different IP address, and the gateways' SIC certificates are bound to the old SMS IP address.

Answer

The new SMS requires a SIC reset on each gateway to re-establish trust.

Answer

The gateways' SIC certificates have expired and need to be renewed.
