SPLK-1004 Search Tuning Performance And Dashboards Practice Test 4 — 15 Questions

Question 1

Which TWO of the following are valid ways to improve search performance?

Accepted Answer

Filter by indexed fields as early as possible.. Option D is correct because filtering on indexed fields as early as possible lets the search engine discard non-matching events before running expensive operations, reducing the amount of data processed downstream. Option E is correct because restricting the time range limits the volume of events scanned, and since time is a default indexed field, narrowing it dramatically cuts search cost and latency. Options A and C are incorrect because join and transaction are both costly, memory-intensive commands that should be used sparingly rather than for all matching or aggregation. Option B is incorrect because leading wildcards prevent efficient index usage and force a full scan, degrading performance.

Answer

Use the join command for all data matching.

Answer

Always use wildcards at the beginning of terms.

Answer

Use the transaction command for all aggregations.

Question 2

Which TWO of the following are benefits of using a lookup instead of a join?

Accepted Answer

Reduced memory consumption.. Option A (Reduced memory consumption) is correct because a lookup enriches events by matching field values against a compact lookup table (e.g., a CSV or KV Store lookup) rather than building and holding the larger intermediate result sets that a join creates when combining two searches, so less memory is used. Option B (Improved search performance) is correct because lookup matching is a fast, single-pass enrichment against a small table, avoiding the expensive subsearch execution and result correlation that joins require, which typically yields faster searches. Option C is not correct because handling real-time streaming data is a property of ingestion/indexing (e.g., real-time search or streaming commands), not a specific benefit of lookups over joins. Option D is not correct because subsearches are a feature of the search language itself and can be used with joins as well; lookups do not provide subsearch support as a distinguishing benefit. Option E is not correct because lookups do not automatically update indexes; index updates occur through indexing, and lookup tables must be refreshed or managed separately.

Answer

Ability to handle real-time streaming data.

Answer

Support for subsearches.

Answer

Automatic index updating.

Question 3

Which THREE of the following are valid ways to troubleshoot a slow dashboard?

Accepted Answer

Inspect the dashboard XML for inefficient post-processing.. Option A is correct because dashboard panels often rely on post-process searches, and inefficient or overly broad post-processing defined in the dashboard XML (simple XML or dashboard studio JSON/XML) can cause slow rendering, so inspecting it reveals costly base searches and post-process chains. Option B is correct because the Monitoring Console provides dashboards such as Search Activity and Search Usage Statistics that show search duration, concurrency, skipped searches, and resource usage, which helps identify whether the slowness stems from search load or scheduling. Option E is correct because the Search Inspector (Job Inspector) exposes execution costs, including search time breakdown, command-level timings, and warnings, allowing you to pinpoint expensive commands or phases in a dashboard search. Option C is not appropriate because re-indexing all data is a drastic, unrelated action that does not address dashboard search performance and would not fix inefficient queries. Option D is not appropriate because restarting the search head is a disruptive, non-diagnostic step that does not identify or resolve the root cause of a slow dashboard.

Answer

Re-index all the data.

Answer

Restart the Splunk search head.

Question 4

A dashboard panel runs a search that returns 10,000 events, but the panel only displays a single-value element showing the event count. Users report the dashboard is sluggish. Which Splunk search command should you add to the base search to reduce the data returned to the panel while preserving the count?

Accepted Answer

stats count. The panel only needs the total number of matching events, so applying a transforming command that collapses the result set to a single row is the correct optimization. Aggregating with stats count returns one value, which is exactly what the single-value panel requires, and it eliminates the overhead of transferring and rendering thousands of raw events.

Answer

table _time, host

Answer

sort -_time

Answer

dedup host

Question 5

A dashboard panel's search reads 12 GB from disk but returns only 4,000 events. In Search Inspector, which metric should you investigate first to reduce unnecessary disk reads?

Accepted Answer

The 'Disk Usage' metric showing bytes read from disk. Search Inspector provides a Disk Usage metric that reports how much data the search read from disk. A large read volume with a small result set indicates the search is scanning far more raw data than necessary. Addressing this by narrowing the time range, adding indexed field filters, or using summary indexes directly reduces disk reads and improves performance.

Answer

The 'Result Count' metric showing the number of returned events

Answer

The 'Execution Cost' metric indicating CPU time spent

Answer

The search's 'bucket' count in the Search Inspector's 'Performance' section

Question 6

A dashboard uses a base search that returns 50,000 events, and three panels each apply a post-process search to summarize those events differently. Users report that the dashboard takes a long time to load and that the post-process searches sometimes fail with a 'post process search cannot be used' error. Which action best resolves the loading delay and the error?

Accepted Answer

Add a transforming command such as stats or tstats to the base search so it returns a smaller, aggregated result set.. Post-process searches operate on the results of the base search, so their performance and success depend heavily on how many rows the base search returns. Aggregating the base search with a transforming command such as stats or tstats shrinks the result set before any post-process runs, which speeds up all panels and keeps the result size within acceptable limits, resolving the error.

Answer

Move the post-process searches into the base search by combining them with append and join commands.

Answer

Increase the search job lifetime so the base search results remain available longer for the post-process searches.

Answer

Convert each post-process search into a separate full search with its own time range and index specification.

Question 7

A dashboard uses a base search with a post-process search for each of six panels. Users report that changing the time range picker does not update the panels. The base search includes earliest=-24h latest=now. What is the most likely cause?

Accepted Answer

The base search hard-codes earliest and latest, so the time range picker selection is ignored.. A base search that explicitly sets earliest and latest overrides the dashboard time range picker. To make the picker control the panels, the base search must use tokens for its time range, such as earliest=$earliest$ latest=$latest$, or omit the time range entirely so the picker's values are applied. Post-process searches inherit the base search's results and time context, so the fix belongs in the base search definition.

Answer

The dashboard's time range picker is not connected to the base search because it lacks a 'searchWhenChanged' attribute.

Answer

The post-process searches do not inherit the time range from the base search, so each panel must define its own time range.

Answer

The post-process searches must each include a 'timechart' command to respond to the time picker.

Question 8

A dashboard panel runs a search that aggregates firewall events by src_ip. Users report the panel takes over a minute to render. The search uses `stats count by src_ip` after a base search that retrieves 30 days of data. The Search Inspector shows the search is reading far more events than needed, and the aggregation is spilling to disk. Which change is most likely to reduce the panel's render time while preserving the result?

Accepted Answer

Add `| tstats count where index=firewall by src_ip` to replace the base search and stats command.. Replacing the raw-event aggregation with tstats uses indexed fields and tsidx summaries, eliminating full event retrieval and parsing. This directly addresses the excessive reads and disk spill shown by Search Inspector while returning the same counts, provided the field is indexed. The other options either change results, hide the symptom, or truncate data.

Answer

Add `| head 10000` immediately after the base search to limit events.

Answer

Increase the dashboard's refresh interval so the search runs less often.

Answer

Move the `stats` command earlier in the pipeline before any filtering commands.

Question 9

A dashboard has a base search that returns a summarized result set, and several panels use post-process searches. You notice that one panel's post-process search returns no results while the base search clearly has data. Which TWO configuration issues could cause a post-process search to return no results? (Choose two.)

Accepted Answer

The post-process search references a field that was not included in the base search results.. Post-process searches are constrained to the fields and time range established by the base search. Referencing a field that the base search did not return, or specifying a different time range in the post-process, will cause the post-process to find no matching rows even when the base search has data. Both are common configuration mistakes when building dashboards with shared base searches.

Answer

The dashboard's refresh interval is set to a long duration.

Answer

The base search is configured with a very large max result count.

Answer

The post-process search uses the tstats command instead of stats.

Question 10

A dashboard panel runs a search that aggregates web access logs over the last 30 days. Users report the dashboard takes over a minute to load, and the Search Inspector shows high disk read time. The search is not scheduled and there is no acceleration. Which action should you take to reduce the panel's load time while preserving the ability to view the most recent 30 days of data?

Accepted Answer

Create a report acceleration summary for the search and enable acceleration on the saved search powering the panel.. Report acceleration creates precomputed summary data for a saved search, so the panel reads smaller tsidx files instead of scanning raw events across 30 days. This cuts disk read time and speeds dashboard loading while preserving the full time range. The panel must be tied to an accelerated saved search, and the acceleration must be enabled on that saved search.

Answer

Convert the panel to use a post-process search that inherits results from a base search.

Answer

Change the panel's time range to 'Last 24 hours' and add a note that older data is unavailable.

Answer

Add the tstats command with the prestats=true argument to the panel search.

Question 11

A dashboard panel shows a timechart of web request latency, and users want to click a point on the chart to open a new search in a separate window that lists the individual slow requests for that time. Which dashboard feature should you configure to enable this behavior?

Accepted Answer

A drilldown defined on the chart with a link to a search that uses the clicked time as a token.. The requirement is an interactive, click-driven action that opens a detail search for a selected point. Drilldown configuration on the chart is the dashboard feature designed for this: it captures the clicked value, such as a timestamp, and passes it as a token to a target search that can open in a new window, showing the underlying slow requests.

Answer

A scheduled alert that triggers when latency exceeds a threshold.

Answer

A post-process search that reuses the panel's base search results.

Answer

A token set by an input element that filters the dashboard's time range.

Question 12

A dashboard uses a base search in a `` element and several panels that reference it with ``. Users report that changing a time token does not update all panels consistently, and some panels show stale data. You need to correct the dashboard so all panels re-run when the token changes. (Choose two.)

Accepted Answer

Ensure each panel search includes the token in its own search string or in the base search it references.. Token-driven refresh requires the token to be both in scope for the panel and referenced in the panel's search. Defining the token at dashboard or global scope and including it in the base or panel search ensures Splunk re-runs the panel when the token value changes. Polling, duplicating searches, or adding drilldown do not establish that dependency.

Answer

Convert all panel searches to inline searches that duplicate the base search logic.

Answer

Add a `<drilldown>` element to each panel to force a re-render when the token changes.

Answer

Set the panels' `refresh` attribute to a fixed interval so they poll for changes.

Question 13

You are building a dashboard with a base search that returns a large result set, and three panels that each perform different statistical calculations on that same result set. You want to minimize the number of times the base search runs and ensure all panels update together. Which approach should you use?

Accepted Answer

Define a base search in the dashboard and have each panel use a post-process search that references the base search results.. A base search runs once and its results are stored, then post-process searches in other panels operate on that stored result set. This minimizes the number of times the heavy base search executes and ensures all panels use the same data, so they update together. It is the standard Splunk method for sharing search results across multiple panels in one dashboard.

Answer

Configure each panel to use the same search string and rely on Splunk's search result cache to deduplicate the searches.

Answer

Schedule each panel's search independently with the same cron schedule and the same time range.

Answer

Use a global search in the dashboard that all panels inherit automatically through the search template.

Question 14

A dashboard has a base search that runs against a large index and takes 30 seconds to complete. Several panels use post-process searches to summarize the base results. Users complain that the dashboard is slow to load and that changing an input causes the entire base search to re-run. Which approach best improves the dashboard's performance?

Accepted Answer

Replace the base search with a scheduled search that populates a summary index, and have the dashboard panels search the summary index.. The dashboard's bottleneck is the expensive base search that scans a large index and re-runs on every load or input change. Precomputing the aggregation with a scheduled search that populates a summary index lets the panels query a small, fast dataset, removing the repeated heavy scan and making the dashboard responsive regardless of input changes.

Answer

Add more post-process searches to distribute the summarization work across panels.

Answer

Increase the dashboard's refresh interval so the base search runs less frequently.

Answer

Convert the base search to use the transaction command to group related events before summarizing.

Question 15

You are building a dashboard with a text input that sets a token named `filter_field`. You want the token to be available to all panels and to have a default value of `status`. Which XML element and attribute should you use to define this input?

Accepted Answer

status. In Simple XML, the element sets the default value for an input token. For a text input, placing status inside the element ensures the token filter_field starts with status when the dashboard loads. This makes the default available to all panels using that token.

Answer

<input type="text" token="filter_field"><label>status</label></input>

Answer

<input type="text" token="filter_field"><default>status</default></input>

Answer
