SPLK-1004 Search Tuning Performance And Dashboards — 20 Questions

Question 1

You have a dashboard with a form input that triggers a search. To prevent the search from running automatically when the page loads, which attribute must you configure?

Accepted Answer

searchWhenChanged="false". In Splunk Simple XML dashboards, the 'searchWhenChanged' attribute on a form input controls whether the input's search runs automatically when the input value changes or when the page loads. Setting searchWhenChanged="false" prevents the search from running on page load and requires the user to explicitly submit the form. This is the correct attribute for controlling auto-execution of form input searches.

Answer

runOnSubmit="true"

Answer

initialization="manual"

Answer

autoRun="false"

Question 2

A user wants to pass multiple values from a multiselect input to a search. Which option must be enabled in the input configuration for the token value to be formatted correctly for an 'IN' clause?

Accepted Answer

valuePrefix/valueSuffix. When passing multiple values from a multiselect input to a search, the token must be formatted so that each value is quoted and comma-separated for use in an 'IN' clause. Enabling valuePrefix and valueSuffix allows you to wrap each value with quotes (e.g., valuePrefix=" and valueSuffix="), producing a properly formatted list like "value1","value2". This ensures the token expands correctly in SPL.

Answer

searchable

Answer

delimiter

Answer

tokenFormatter

Question 3

You are investigating a slow-running search that uses a subsearch. Which of the following is the most effective way to optimize the subsearch performance by limiting the result set returned to the outer search?

Accepted Answer

Use the return command to specify the exact number of results to pass.. The return command is used to pass a limited set of results from a subsearch to the outer search. By specifying the exact number of results to return, you can optimize performance by reducing the data transferred.

Answer

Use the limit command to filter results to 1000.

Answer

Apply the fields command before the subsearch ends.

Answer

Convert the subsearch into a join command.

Question 4

Which element in the dashboard XML is used to create a link to another dashboard?

Accepted Answer

. In Splunk Simple XML dashboards, the element is used inside a drilldown or panel to define a hyperlink to another dashboard or URL. It is the standard element for creating navigation links between dashboards.

Answer

Answer

Answer

Question 5

Which XML component in a dashboard is used to define a custom search that is not tied to any specific visual panel?

Accepted Answer

. The element in Simple XML defines a named search that can be referenced by other dashboard elements (such as panels, inputs, or other searches) without being tied to a specific visual panel. It is typically placed inside a or context and is used to create reusable base searches or global searches that drive multiple visualizations.

Answer

Answer

<base>

Answer

Question 6

When a dashboard panel uses a base search and a post-process search, which command is NOT allowed in the post-process search?

Accepted Answer

metadata. The metadata command queries index metadata and cannot operate on the result set produced by a base search, so it is not allowed in a post-process search. Post-process searches are restricted to commands that transform or filter the already-retrieved results, such as eval, sort, and stats. This restriction exists because post-process searches run against cached results, not the index.

Answer

eval

Answer

sort

Answer

stats

Question 7

You want to dynamically set the value of a token based on the result of a search. Which element should be used within the search block?

Accepted Answer

. To dynamically set a token based on search results within a search block in Splunk Simple XML, the element is used. It is an event handler that triggers when the search completes, and within it, you can use to assign values to tokens based on the search results. The element is specifically designed for this purpose, making B the correct choice.

Answer

Answer

<set>

Answer

<final>

Question 8

Where do you configure a default time range for an entire dashboard?

Accepted Answer

Inside the

element.. The

or top-level XML configuration allows setting a global time range picker.

Answer

In the search configuration.

Answer

In the panel definition.

Answer

In the user preferences.

Question 9

Which TWO of the following are true regarding dashboard tokens?

Accepted Answer

Tokens are automatically scoped globally.. Option B is correct because dashboard tokens are automatically scoped globally, meaning a token defined in one place (such as a dashboard or a form input) is available to all panels and inputs across the entire dashboard without needing explicit scoping declarations. Option E is correct because tokens can be set using the <set> element, which is the standard mechanism in dashboard XML for assigning a value to a token, either statically or dynamically via a search or condition. Option A is incorrect because tokens are case-sensitive, so a token named "host" is distinct from "Host". Option C is incorrect because token changes take effect immediately upon being set or updated, without requiring a restart of the dashboard or search head. Option D is incorrect because tokens can hold values beyond strings, such as numbers, booleans, and arrays, depending on how they are defined and used.

Answer

Tokens are case-insensitive.

Answer

Tokens require a restart to take effect.

Answer

Tokens can only be strings.

Question 10

Which THREE of the following are components of a drilldown interaction in a dashboard?

Accepted Answer

Condition. In dashboard drilldown design, a Condition (A) is a required component because it defines the trigger or filter logic that determines when and how the drilldown fires based on user interaction or data state. A Link (B) is also required because it specifies the destination—such as a URL, report, or dashboard—that the user is taken to when the drilldown is activated. A Set (E) is the third required component because it defines the values or parameters (for example, token or field values) that are passed along to the target of the drilldown to contextualize the destination view. The remaining options do not belong: a Field (C) is a data element used within conditions or sets rather than a standalone drilldown component, and a Search (D) is a query or retrieval action, not a structural component of a drilldown interaction.

Answer

Field

Answer

Search

Question 11

Which TWO of the following input types can be used to populate a dashboard token?

Accepted Answer

Dropdown. Dropdowns and Text inputs are both valid ways to provide token values.

Answer

Slider

Question 12

Which THREE of the following are valid ways to optimize subsearches?

Accepted Answer

Reduce the total time range of the subsearch.. Option A is correct because the cost of a subsearch grows with the amount of data it must scan, so narrowing its time range (for example with an explicit earliest/latest or a shorter relative window) directly reduces the events processed and the resulting search cost. Option D is correct because returning fewer fields shrinks the result set the subsearch must materialize and pass to the outer search, reducing memory and I/O overhead. Option E is correct because the return command lets you cap the number of results (for example return 100 field) and shape the output, which bounds the subsearch result size and prevents oversized result sets from degrading performance. Option B is not a valid optimization: increasing the subsearch timeout only allows a slow subsearch to run longer and does not reduce its cost or improve efficiency. Option C is not a valid optimization either: replacing a subsearch with join typically increases resource usage and is not a recommended performance-tuning technique.

Answer

Increase the subsearch timeout.

Answer

Use the join command instead.

Question 13

Which THREE of the following are required to successfully implement a dependent dropdown?

Accepted Answer

The parent token must be referenced in the second input's search.. In a dependent dropdown, the child input's search must explicitly reference the parent token so that the results are filtered by the parent's selected value, which is exactly what option B states. Option C is required because the parent input needs a unique ID so that the dependency relationship can be unambiguously defined and referenced by the child input. Option D is required because the dependent input must declare the parent token as a dependency, which is what establishes the parent-child linkage and triggers the child to refresh when the parent changes. Options A and E are not required: dependent dropdowns are typically configured declaratively through the platform's settings rather than requiring a custom JavaScript file, and a custom CSS file is purely cosmetic and has no bearing on the dependency logic.

Answer

A JavaScript file.

Answer

A custom CSS file.

Question 14

Which TWO of the following are valid methods to share a dashboard in Splunk?

Accepted Answer

Permissions menu.. Option A (Permissions menu) is correct because Splunk dashboards are knowledge objects whose sharing is controlled through the Permissions dialog, where you set the sharing level (Private, App, or Global) and assign read/write roles to users. Option D (Changing the app scope) is correct because moving a dashboard from one app's context to another (via Settings > User Interface or by changing its app namespace) changes who can see it, effectively sharing it with the users of that app. Option B is wrong because restarting the Splunk service only reloads configuration and does not share a dashboard. Option C is wrong because emailing the XML file is a manual export, not a Splunk sharing method. Option E is wrong because web.conf controls web server settings, not dashboard sharing permissions.

Answer

Restarting the Splunk service.

Answer

Emailing the XML file.

Answer

Editing the web.conf file.

Question 15

Which THREE of the following dashboard elements can be customized using tokens?

Accepted Answer

Search queries.. Tokens in Splunk dashboards are variables that can be referenced in various dashboard elements to make them dynamic and interactive. Option B (Search queries) is correct because tokens can be embedded in search strings to filter or modify results based on user input or other conditions. Option C (Panel titles) is correct because tokens can be used in panel titles to display dynamic text, such as the value of a selected field or a time range. Option E (Input defaults) is correct because tokens can set default values for inputs, allowing pre-population or conditional defaults. Option A (System user accounts) is not a dashboard element and cannot be customized with tokens. Option D (The Splunk Web port) is a configuration setting for the Splunk web server, not a dashboard element, and cannot be modified via tokens.

Answer

System user accounts.

Answer

The Splunk Web port.

Question 16

You need to create a reusable search that multiple panels in the same dashboard can reference without duplicating the search string. Which dashboard XML element should you use?

Accepted Answer

. The element defines a search once at the dashboard level, and panels reference it using post-process searches. This pattern eliminates duplicated search strings, reduces the number of searches that run, and improves dashboard load performance. Each panel's post-process search then applies its own transformations or filters to the shared base results.

Answer

Answer

<panel>

Answer

<post-process>

Question 17

A dashboard panel uses a base search that returns 500,000 events. Several panels reference this base search, and users complain that the dashboard takes over two minutes to load. The base search is defined with the following search string: `index=web status=200 | stats count by host, uri`. Which change would most effectively reduce the dashboard load time while preserving the data displayed in the panels?

Accepted Answer

Add `| tstats` with `summariesonly=t` against the `host` and `uri` fields, using an accelerated data model.. The base search is slow because it scans 500,000 raw events to compute counts by host and uri. Using `tstats` with `summariesonly=t` against an accelerated data model lets Splunk read pre-computed summaries, avoiding raw event scanning while returning the same aggregated results. This directly reduces load time for all panels that depend on the base search, without changing the displayed data.

Answer

Move the base search into a post-process search and add `| head 1000` to limit the number of events returned.

Answer

Increase the dashboard refresh interval to 10 minutes so the search runs less frequently.

Answer

Add `| dedup host, uri` to the base search to reduce the number of rows returned to the panels.

Question 18

A dashboard panel's search is slow because it filters events with a base search that returns millions of events, then applies a transforming command. You want to reduce the amount of data the search reads from disk while preserving the panel's results. Which search optimization technique should you apply?

Accepted Answer

Add a tstats command to replace the base search and use accum for the transforming command.. The tstats command queries indexed fields directly in tsidx files, bypassing raw event retrieval. When the base search only needs indexed fields, replacing it with tstats reduces disk I/O. Using accum or another tstats-supported aggregation preserves the result. The other options do not reduce data read from disk and may increase resource usage.

Answer

Add the fillnull command after the transforming command to reduce null values.

Answer

Set the search's time range to All Time to ensure the search head caches more results.

Answer

Increase the search head's max_searches_per_cpu setting in limits.conf.

Question 19

A dashboard's base search returns 50,000 events, and each of five panels applies a post-process search. Users report the dashboard is slow to load. Which change is most likely to improve performance without altering the panels' displayed results?

Accepted Answer

Move the base search to a scheduled saved search and use a summary index for the panels.. The base search returning 50,000 events is processed once, but the post-process searches still operate on that large result set and the base search itself reads raw data at load time. Moving the base search to a scheduled search that populates a summary index lets the panels read pre-aggregated results, cutting load time while preserving displayed results if the summary captures the needed fields. Truncating or duplicating searches would either change results or increase load.

Answer

Add 'searchWhenChanged="true"' to each panel's post-process search.

Answer

Add '| head 1000' to the base search to limit the number of events returned.

Answer

Convert each panel's post-process search into a separate full search against the index.

Question 20

A power user is building a dashboard and wants a dropdown input to display the label "Select Environment" while storing the value "prod" for use in searches. Which Simple XML configuration achieves this?

Accepted Answer

Use a `Select Environment` inside the input.. A choice element maps a stored value to a visible label via the value attribute and element text. This is the standard Simple XML pattern for dropdowns where the search token must differ from what the user reads. Other approaches either misuse attributes, add unnecessary searches, or create invalid token names.

Answer

Set the input's `label` attribute to "Select Environment" and the `value` attribute to "prod".

Answer

Use a `<populatingSearch>` that returns "prod" and set the label via `fieldForLabel`.

Answer

Define a token named "Select Environment" with a default value of "prod".
