ARA-C01 Snowflake Architecture — 40 Questions

Question 1

The Cloud Services layer in Snowflake is responsible for coordinating activities across the entire system. Which THREE tasks are specifically performed by this layer? (Select THREE)

Accepted Answer

Authentication and access control for user sessions.. The Cloud Services layer is a multi-tenant collection of services that manage the 'brain' of Snowflake. It handles everything from the initial user connection to the final query result retrieval. Because it stores metadata for all micro-partitions, it is also responsible for query optimization and pruning decisions, which are critical for the efficiency of the compute layer.

Answer

Storing the actual raw data files in micro-partitions.

Answer

Executing heavy DML operations like JOINs and aggregations.

Question 2

Refer to the exhibit. An architect is reviewing a JSON-based Network Rule policy intended to restrict access. Based on the provided structure, what is the primary architectural purpose of this configuration when applied to a Snowflake account?

Accepted Answer

It specifies the client types allowed to establish a connection to the account.. Network Rules are a modern architectural component in Snowflake that allow for granular control over network traffic. They can be used to define allowed or blocked network identifiers, such as IP addresses or private link IDs. This specific JSON structure represents a rule that can be integrated into Network Policies to restrict connection types based on client identifiers.

Answer

It defines a firewall rule that limits storage layer access to specific IP ranges.

Answer

It configures a private link connection for cross-region data replication.

Answer

It acts as a Resource Monitor to limit the credits consumed by JDBC clients.

Question 3

Which TWO characteristics describe the behavior of Snowflake's Zero-copy cloning feature?

Accepted Answer

The clone and the source table can be modified independently after the cloning process.. Zero-copy cloning is a metadata-only operation that allows architects to create copies of tables, schemas, or databases without duplicating the physical data. This is possible because micro-partitions are immutable. The clone initially points to the same storage files as the source, and only new or modified data in either the source or the clone results in additional storage charges.

Answer

Cloning a table creates a physical copy of all micro-partitions in the storage layer.

Answer

Cloning a database also clones the external stages and storage integrations defined in it.

Answer

Cloning requires a running virtual warehouse to process the data duplication.

Question 4

An organization is migrating to Snowflake and requires strict data isolation between production and development environments while sharing a common data provider. Which architectural approach minimizes administrative overhead while maintaining complete security separation?

Accepted Answer

Create two distinct Snowflake accounts and use Secure Data Sharing to grant access.. Utilizing separate Snowflake accounts within the same or different regions provides the strongest security boundary. This approach allows for distinct administrative control, independent network policies, and segregated billing. By leveraging Snowflake's Secure Data Sharing, the production account can act as a provider to the development account without moving data, effectively balancing the need for strict isolation with the requirement for efficient access to common datasets for testing purposes.

Answer

Deploy separate databases within the same account and use role-based access control.

Answer

Implement Virtual Private Snowflake (VPS) to manage environments via isolated network subnets.

Answer

Use a single account and separate warehouses to isolate query processing loads.

Question 5

Refer to the exhibit. A data engineer receives this error while trying to run a query. What is the most likely architectural bottleneck preventing the execution?

Accepted Answer

The user is missing the USAGE privilege on the target warehouse.. The error code 390100 specifically indicates a privilege issue regarding the warehouse. Even if the user has SELECT privileges on the underlying tables, they must have USAGE privileges on the compute warehouse to execute queries. This architectural separation between storage access and compute access is a fundamental design choice in Snowflake to ensure that compute resources cannot be utilized by unauthorized users, thereby enforcing granular governance over expensive warehouse resources.

Answer

The user lacks the global MANAGE GRANTS privilege on the account.

Answer

The warehouse is currently suspended, preventing query compilation.

Answer

The query requires a higher warehouse size than the current allocation.

Question 6

Which TWO of the following statements regarding Snowflake's micro-partitioning architecture are correct?

Accepted Answer

Micro-partitions are immutable and stored in a columnar format.. Micro-partitioning is the foundational storage layer of Snowflake. Unlike traditional block-based storage, micro-partitions are immutable and automatically managed. Because they store metadata about data distribution, Snowflake can perform partition pruning to skip irrelevant data, drastically reducing I/O. These partitions are stored in the cloud provider's object storage, ensuring that compute and storage remain decoupled, allowing each to be scaled independently based on the specific workload demands of the user.

Answer

Users must manually execute an optimization command to re-partition tables for performance.

Answer

Micro-partition size is fixed at 128MB to ensure predictable performance.

Answer

Data in micro-partitions is indexed using traditional B-tree structures.

Question 7

A company wants to store sensitive PII data in Snowflake but needs to ensure that even a superuser with ACCOUNTADMIN privileges cannot view the raw data. Which architectural feature should be implemented?

Accepted Answer

Utilize Row-Level Security policies combined with Tri-Secret Secure.. The combination of Data Encryption with Customer-Managed Keys (Tri-Secret Secure) and Row-Level Security (RLS) provides a robust defense-in-depth strategy. While ACCOUNTADMINs have broad powers, utilizing externalized key management through Tri-Secret Secure adds a layer of encryption that requires external authorization. Combined with RLS policies, this ensures that data access is restricted based on user context rather than just administrative role hierarchy, meeting stringent compliance requirements for sensitive PII handling.

Answer

Implement Snowflake Dynamic Data Masking on all PII columns.

Answer

Configure Tri-Secret Secure with customer-managed keys.

Answer

Enable Always Encrypted features within the client application driver.

Question 8

Which THREE of the following are true about Snowflake's result caching architecture?

Accepted Answer

Result cache entries expire after 24 hours of inactivity.. Result caching is a vital performance feature that stores the output of a query in the Cloud Services layer. When the same query is executed again, and the underlying data hasn't changed, Snowflake returns the cached result. This bypasses the need to engage compute resources, saving both time and money. It is a shared cache within the account, meaning results are accessible to any user with the appropriate privileges on the source objects.

Answer

The result cache is dependent on the warehouse size used for the original query.

Answer

The result cache is stored locally on the compute node's SSD.

Question 9

Which TWO of the following are benefits of using Multi-Cluster Warehouses?

Accepted Answer

They enable horizontal scaling to handle high concurrency.. Multi-cluster warehouses address the challenge of high concurrency by dynamically spinning up additional clusters when a queue is detected. This ensures that users do not experience performance degradation during peak hours. Each cluster is independent, allowing for linear scaling of query throughput. This provides a robust way to handle thousands of concurrent users without needing to manage the underlying compute infrastructure manually or over-provision for peak load scenarios.

Answer

They allow for vertical scaling of individual query performance.

Answer

They reduce the need for micro-partition pruning.

Answer

They automatically redistribute data to improve storage efficiency.

Question 10

Which TWO statements accurately describe the behavior of Snowflake's Micro-partitions and their role in data pruning?

Accepted Answer

Snowflake stores metadata about each micro-partition, including the range of values in each column.. Micro-partitions are the unit of storage in Snowflake; they are immutable and contain metadata about the data they hold. The Cloud Services layer uses this metadata (min/max values) to perform partition pruning, which significantly reduces the amount of data scanned during queries. This architectural approach is fundamental to Snowflake's high performance, as it eliminates the need for manual index management while ensuring efficient data retrieval across massive datasets in a cloud-native manner.

Answer

Micro-partitions are manually created by the user using the CREATE PARTITION command.

Answer

Micro-partitions are mutable and can be updated directly to optimize query performance.

Answer

Pruning occurs at the storage layer to reduce the volume of data loaded into the cache.

Question 11

Which THREE factors are critical to consider when deciding whether to use Snowflake's Data Sharing feature instead of traditional data integration pipelines?

Accepted Answer

The need for near real-time data synchronization.. Data sharing allows secure, live access to data without copying files, which eliminates latency and storage overhead. Architects must evaluate the necessity of real-time access, the administrative cost of managing ETL pipelines, and the security implications of granting access directly to data. This architectural pattern is superior for reducing data movement, provided that both the provider and consumer are within the Snowflake ecosystem, ensuring seamless data exchange and lower total costs.

Answer

The requirement to transform data into different formats before sharing.

Answer

The use of non-Snowflake platforms by the data consumer.

Question 12

Which THREE characteristics of Snowflake's virtual warehouses are true?

Accepted Answer

They can be resized while running, without impacting active queries.. Virtual warehouses are compute clusters that can be resized instantly without downtime. They are designed to be independent, meaning one warehouse's workload does not affect another's performance. They can be configured to auto-suspend when idle to save costs and auto-resume when a new query arrives. These features make them highly flexible, allowing architects to provision compute resources dynamically to meet the specific requirements of varying workloads, from short ad-hoc queries to massive data transformations.

Answer

They must be stopped to change their size.

Answer

They store data locally in their own persistent storage.

Question 13

An architect is designing a multi-tenant application where each tenant has a dedicated warehouse. To control costs, the architect wants to ensure that warehouses are suspended immediately when idle, but also wants to minimize the latency of 'cold starts' for frequent small queries. Which configuration strategy balances these requirements most effectively?

Accepted Answer

Setting AUTO_SUSPEND to a low value like 60 seconds and utilizing the Result Cache.. Setting a very low AUTO_SUSPEND value minimizes credit waste when the warehouse is not in use, while the cloud services layer handles metadata and small result caching to reduce the impact of warehouse activation. However, for extreme performance, maintaining a small 'warm' warehouse or using Query Acceleration Service can be considered, though the most direct balance for cost is precise AUTO_SUSPEND management combined with result reuse.

Answer

Setting AUTO_SUSPEND to 0 to disable the suspension feature entirely.

Answer

Scaling the warehouse to a 4X-Large size to process queries faster before suspension.

Answer

Using a single Multi-cluster Warehouse for all tenants with Economy scaling mode.

Question 14

A database administrator accidentally dropped a critical production table that had a 90-day Time Travel retention period. Which TWO statements are true regarding the recovery of this data? (Choose TWO)

Accepted Answer

The table can be restored using the UNDROP TABLE command as long as it is within 90 days.. When a table is dropped, it can be recovered using the UNDROP command as long as it is within the Time Travel retention period. If the retention period expires, the data moves into Fail-safe for 7 days, during which only Snowflake Support can recover it. Understanding the transition between Time Travel and Fail-safe is vital for disaster recovery planning.

Answer

The table can be recovered using the UNDROP command only if the schema is also undropped.

Answer

The data can be recovered by the user from Fail-safe if the 90-day Time Travel expires.

Answer

If a new table with the same name is created, the dropped table can no longer be undropped.

Question 15

Which component of the Snowflake architecture is responsible for ensuring that data is encrypted at rest using AES-256?

Accepted Answer

The Storage layer, which handles all data persistence.. Security is integrated into every layer of Snowflake, but the physical encryption of data at rest is a core function of the Storage Layer. Snowflake automatically manages the encryption of all data stored in its internal stages and tables, using a hierarchical key management system that rotates keys and ensures data remains protected without user intervention.

Answer

The Cloud Services layer via the Key Management Service.

Answer

The Virtual Warehouse layer during the data ingestion process.

Answer

The Cloud Provider (AWS/Azure/GCP) through their native disk encryption.

Question 16

A table with 100TB of data is frequently queried using filters on three different columns: 'region', 'status', and 'order_date'. The architect wants to optimize performance for all these queries. Why is clustering the table on all three columns potentially less effective than using the Search Optimization Service?

Accepted Answer

Multi-column clustering is subject to the 'curse of dimensionality' and reduces pruning effectiveness.. Clustering is most effective when queries follow the order of the clustering key (prefix). As the number of columns in a clustering key increases, the 'co-locality' of data for each individual column decreases. Search Optimization Service, however, builds independent search structures for each column, allowing for efficient point lookups regardless of which column is filtered or the order of the filters.

Answer

Search Optimization Service is free to maintain, whereas clustering has a compute cost.

Answer

Clustering keys can only be defined on a single column in Snowflake.

Answer

Search Optimization Service only works on tables smaller than 10TB.

Question 17

A company is planning a Disaster Recovery (DR) strategy for their Snowflake environment across two different regions. Which TWO statements are correct regarding Snowflake Database Replication and Failover? (Choose TWO)

Accepted Answer

Failover Groups can include databases, shares, and account-level objects like roles.. Snowflake's Business Critical and higher editions support failover and failback, allowing a secondary database to be promoted to primary during a regional outage. This is managed through Failover Groups, which synchronize not just data, but also roles, users, and grants, ensuring that the secondary site is functionally equivalent to the primary for seamless application transition.

Answer

Replication is synchronous, ensuring zero data loss (RPO=0) between regions.

Answer

The secondary database is read-write and can accept updates at any time.

Answer

Replication only works between accounts in the same Snowflake Organization.

Question 18

Which TWO of the following statements accurately describe the characteristics of Snowflake's Cloud Services layer?

Accepted Answer

It handles the maintenance of metadata and query results caching.. The Cloud Services layer is the brain of Snowflake, managing authentication, access control, metadata, query optimization, and result caching. It is essential to understand that this layer is compute-intensive for orchestration but distinct from the Virtual Warehouse compute clusters used for data processing. Its functions ensure that users interact with the system securely and efficiently, maintaining the transactional integrity of the Snowflake platform across all regional deployments.

Answer

It manages the execution of DML and DDL queries.

Answer

It is responsible for data storage and compression.

Answer

It is elastic and scales automatically based on query complexity.

Question 19

Which component is primarily responsible for performing 'query pruning' during the execution of a SQL statement?

Accepted Answer

Cloud Services Layer. Query pruning is a critical performance feature where Snowflake uses metadata about micro-partitions to skip scanning irrelevant data files. This process is orchestrated by the Cloud Services layer, which consults the metadata store to determine which files match the filter criteria. This reduces I/O and speeds up query execution, making it a fundamental concept for performance tuning and efficient storage management in Snowflake.
