PRINCE2 Foundation is the entry-level qualification for the world's most widely used project management method. It validates understanding of the PRINCE2 framework and terminology — the baseline credential for project roles in UK government, European enterprises, and international organisations.

Domain percentage weights are not currently available for this exam. The checklist below is still useful for planning your study.
Week 1
PRINCE2 Principles: all 7 principles and why they are non-negotiable
Tip: Know all 7 PRINCE2 principles: Continued Business Justification, Learn from Experience, Defined Roles and Responsibilities, Manage by Stages, Manage by Exception, Focus on Products, Tailor to Suit the Project Environment. The exam tests whether you can identify which principle is violated when a scenario describes poor practice.
Week 2
PRINCE2 Themes: Business Case, Organisation, Quality, Plans, Risk, Change, Progress
Tip: The 7 PRINCE2 themes correspond to the 7 questions every project must answer: Why (Business Case), Who (Organisation), What (Quality), How, How Much, When (Plans), What If (Risk), What's the Impact (Change), Where Are We (Progress). Know what each theme addresses and which management product belongs to each theme.
Week 3
PRINCE2 Processes: the 7 processes and their sequence
Tip: PRINCE2 processes in order: Starting Up a Project → Directing a Project (runs throughout) → Initiating a Project → Controlling a Stage → Managing Product Delivery → Managing a Stage Boundary → Closing a Project. Know which role is responsible for each process and what the process produces (outputs). Directing a Project is the Project Board's process — they do not manage day-to-day.
Week 4–5
Roles, Management Products, and Practice Questions
Tip: PRINCE2 roles tested on Foundation: Project Board (Executive, Senior User, Senior Supplier), Project Manager, Team Manager, Change Authority, Project Assurance (cannot be delegated to the PM), Project Support (can be shared or centralised). Know what each role is responsible for and which project decisions each role makes.
PRINCE2 Foundation exam (2023 edition): 60 questions, 60 minutes, 55% passing score (33 correct). The 2023 edition updated the scheme — ensure your study materials reference the 2023 Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 6th Edition or the 2023 revision.
PRINCE2 management products are the documents the method requires. Know the key ones: Business Case (why the project is worthwhile), Project Initiation Documentation (PID — how the project will be managed), Project Plan, Stage Plan, Work Package (instructions to a Team Manager), Lessons Log, Risk Register, Issue Register. Know which process creates and maintains each document.
Tolerance is a fundamental PRINCE2 concept: the amount of deviation from the plan that is permitted before an exception must be escalated to the next level of management. Know the six tolerance types: time, cost, scope, quality, risk, and benefit. Know that setting tolerances is how PRINCE2 implements 'manage by exception'.
PRINCE2 does not prescribe how many stages a project must have, only that there must be at least two (initiation stage + at least one delivery stage). The Project Board approves progression from one stage to the next at an End Stage Assessment. Know that the Project Manager cannot proceed to the next stage without Project Board approval.
PRINCE2 Foundation is a stepping stone to PRINCE2 Practitioner, which tests application and scenario-based questions (not just recall). Foundation demonstrates you understand PRINCE2; Practitioner demonstrates you can apply it. Foundation has no expiry; Practitioner is valid for 3 years.
