Kubernetes (CNCF) Certification Path

The container orchestration certifications for cloud-native engineering

KCNA: 4–6 weeks; CKA: 2–4 months; CKS requires CKA first
4 certifications across 2 levels

CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Foundation) certifications validate Kubernetes expertise — the de facto standard for container orchestration. Unlike most certs, CNCF exams are performance-based (hands-on terminal, no multiple choice) and the most practical certifications in cloud-native engineering. All are valid for 2 years.

Where to start — by experience level

New to Kubernetes

KCNA for concepts, then CKA for hands-on cluster administration — the most in-demand cert.

Developer deploying to K8s

CKAD — it focuses on application deployment, not cluster admin.

CKA already certified

CKS — validates security hardening skills and is required for many security-adjacent K8s roles.

Kubernetes (CNCF) certification — frequently asked questions

Are CKA exams really hands-on?

Yes — all CNCF professional exams are conducted in a live terminal environment. No multiple choice. You solve real cluster problems in 2 hours. This makes them highly respected by employers.

Do I need CKA before CKS?

Yes — CKS formally requires an active CKA certification. You must hold CKA before registering for CKS.
