ITIL4-DPI Practice Exam 4 — 20 Questions

Question 1

Which THREE factors must be considered when defining the 'Success Criteria' for a new improvement initiative?

Accepted Answer

Clear alignment with the business outcomes defined in the strategy.. Success criteria must be measurable, relevant, and aligned with the overarching strategic goals. They provide the benchmarks against which the progress and outcome of an improvement can be evaluated. By ensuring these criteria are clearly defined, an organization can provide objective evidence of value realization, maintain stakeholder alignment, and demonstrate the effectiveness of the DPI framework in driving organizational success and continuous evolution.

The total cost of implementation regardless of expected return.

Answer

The personal preference of the project manager leading the work.

Question 2

Which THREE activities are essential for effective 'Directing' within an organization?

Accepted Answer

Defining the vision and strategy. Directing involves setting the vision and strategy, communicating that intent clearly, and establishing a system of authority that empowers teams while maintaining control. By defining the 'why' and 'what,' leaders provide the necessary focus for the organization. Effective direction also requires continuous monitoring of the environment to ensure the strategy remains relevant, allowing for timely adjustments to keep the organization moving toward its intended future state.

Answer

Managing daily infrastructure maintenance schedules

Writing code for the core application framework

Question 3

Which approach is most effective for ensuring that an improvement initiative remains aligned with strategic objectives throughout its lifecycle?

Accepted Answer

Implementing continuous feedback loops and regular reassessment. Continuous feedback loops are essential for ensuring alignment. By regularly reassessing the initiative against the original strategic objectives, teams can identify if the project is drifting or if the business context has changed. This constant check-and-balance ensures that the project team is always delivering the right value, and provides the agility to pivot if necessary to maintain relevance to the organization's goals.

Answer

Locking the project scope at the start and forbidding any changes

Answer

Delegating all decision-making to the project lead without oversight

Answer

Focusing solely on the budget and ignoring the strategic output

Question 4

Which TWO of the following are essential components of an effective 'Operating Model' as defined in DPI?

Accepted Answer

The identification of value streams that cross departmental or functional boundaries.. An operating model must define both the flow of value and the governing structures that enable it. By ensuring that the value streams are clearly mapped and the decision-making authority is appropriately distributed, an organization can balance efficiency with the agility needed for continuous improvement. These components provide the structural foundation required for leaders to direct, plan, and improve service delivery effectively across the organization's entire service value system.

A comprehensive database of every ticket generated by the service desk.

Question 5

In the DPI framework, what is the primary purpose of 'Governance'?

Accepted Answer

To ensure organizational activities align with strategic direction and manage risk.. Governance is the system by which an organization is directed and controlled. Its primary purpose is to ensure that the organization's activities are aligned with its strategic objectives, risks are managed within acceptable limits, and resources are used efficiently. It provides the mandate and the boundaries within which management operates, ensuring accountability to stakeholders and consistent delivery of value across all service management practices.

Answer

To execute daily operational tasks.

Answer

To manage the technical configuration of IT infrastructure.

To provide marketing services for the organization.

Question 6

Which TWO of the following actions are essential for effective governance within the DPI framework?

Accepted Answer

Define clear roles, responsibilities, and authority for decision-making across all levels.. Effective governance requires a clear structure for decision-making and continuous oversight to ensure strategic alignment. By establishing clear authorities and implementing monitoring mechanisms, the organization ensures that policies are followed and risks are managed. These actions provide the necessary control environment for sustainable value creation and ensure that strategic planning translates into consistent operational performance across all organizational levels.

Answer

Establish a clear hierarchy that limits communication between different departments to maintain control.

Allow each department to develop its own unique governance model to maximize local autonomy.

Answer

Prioritize cost optimization over all other governance metrics to increase annual profitability.

Question 7

When planning an improvement initiative, why is it critical to understand the 'current state' of the organization?

Accepted Answer

To establish a baseline for measuring the impact of improvements.. Understanding the current state provides the baseline against which progress can be measured. Without an accurate assessment of existing capabilities, processes, and culture, any plan for improvement is based on assumptions rather than facts. This leads to unrealistic goals, misallocated resources, and a high probability of failure. DPI insists on this foundational step to ensure that the gap between current and target states is bridged through evidence-based planning.

Answer

To identify which staff members are responsible for past performance issues.

To ensure that no new technology is introduced during the initiative.

Answer

To reduce the time required to complete the planning phase.

Question 8

Which DPI approach ensures that 'Continual Improvement' is not just an ad-hoc activity?

Accepted Answer

Embedding improvement practices into the organization's governance and daily workflows.. Continual improvement must be an integrated, organizational habit rather than a sporadic effort. By building it into the organizational structure, policies, and culture, leadership ensures that it becomes a standard part of how work is done. This requires formalizing the processes and consistently reinforcing the behavior at all levels, transforming 'improvement' from a project into a core competency of the organization.

Answer

Assigning one dedicated staff member to be responsible for all improvements.

Answer

Setting a requirement that every team must suggest at least one improvement per year.

Answer

Waiting for a major service outage before launching an improvement initiative.

Question 9

Refer to the exhibit. Which action should a DPI practitioner take next regarding this report?

Accepted Answer

Analyze whether the user satisfaction gap is actually caused by a lack of training.. The report suggests a correlation between training and user satisfaction, but correlation is not causation. A practitioner must perform a root cause analysis to determine if training is the actual bottleneck. Simply increasing the budget without verifying the underlying cause might be a waste of resources if, for example, the core issue is software usability or system performance, not employee skill deficiency.

Answer

Approve the budget increase immediately to ensure the target is met as quickly as possible.

Answer

Ignore the report as 78% is an acceptable level of satisfaction for this type of service.

Answer

Request that all staff complete mandatory training regardless of their current performance levels.

Question 10

An organization is establishing a new value stream for software delivery and needs to ensure that improvements are aligned with strategic objectives. Which approach best applies the ITIL 4 Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI) guiding principle 'Focus on value'?

Accepted Answer

Map the software delivery value stream to identify bottlenecks and correlate release frequency metrics directly with customer retention and revenue growth.. Focus on value requires understanding how the customer perceives value and tying every improvement directly to that outcome. Aligning software delivery metrics with business results ensures resources are not wasted on activities that do not contribute to stakeholder satisfaction. This matters because it prevents technical optimization without business relevance.

Answer

Prioritize refactoring legacy backend code to eliminate technical debt before addressing new feature requests from the business.

Answer

Establish a comprehensive dashboard tracking internal development velocity, code commit frequency, and build success rates across all teams.

Answer

Outsource the quality assurance phase to an external vendor to minimize operational costs regardless of potential communication delays.

Question 11

Which of the following best describes the relationship between 'Strategy' and 'Tactics' in DPI?

Accepted Answer

Strategy guides the direction, while tactics ensure effective execution.. Strategy defines the 'why' and 'what' of the organization—the long-term goals and direction. Tactics represent the 'how'—the specific actions and processes taken to achieve those goals. DPI requires that tactics be explicitly aligned with the overarching strategy to ensure that daily operational activities contribute directly to the desired organizational outcomes. Without this alignment, an organization can be very busy while making no progress toward its goals.

Answer

Strategy is for senior management and tactics are for technical staff.

Answer

Tactics are more important than strategy because they deliver results.

Answer

Strategy should be fixed, whereas tactics should be changed daily.

Question 12

An organization is struggling with siloed team cultures that resist sharing knowledge during incident management. Which leadership approach best aligns with the DPI guiding principle of 'Collaborate and promote visibility'?

Accepted Answer

Establish cross-functional communities of practice to encourage open dialogue and shared learning.. Effective leaders must actively dismantle silos by creating cross-functional communication channels. By fostering transparency, they reduce tribal knowledge and ensure that operational data is accessible to all stakeholders. This practice is essential for DPI because it optimizes the flow of value and ensures that improvement initiatives are informed by the entire organization's collective experience rather than fragmented departmental viewpoints.

Answer

Mandate strict adherence to existing departmental Standard Operating Procedures to minimize risk.

Answer

Implement a centralized knowledge management system that requires executive approval before publication.

Answer

Outsource the incident management process to a third-party vendor to eliminate internal conflict.

Question 13

A department manager wants to start an improvement initiative but lacks clear organizational direction. What should the manager do first to ensure the initiative aligns with the strategic intent?

Accepted Answer

Review the organization's strategy and vision to map the proposed initiative to high-level goals.. Alignment is a fundamental DPI requirement. Without clear direction, any improvement effort risks being disconnected from organizational goals, leading to wasted effort and confusion. The manager must first seek clarification or analyze the organization's existing strategy to ensure their initiative supports the broader vision. This top-down alignment ensures that individual improvements contribute meaningfully to the organization's long-term success, a critical component of effective DPI leadership.

Answer

Begin the initiative on a small scale and adjust if higher management raises concerns.

Answer

Ask team members to suggest improvements and proceed with the most popular idea.

Answer

Hire an external consultant to define the strategy for the department.

Question 14

Which TWO of the following statements accurately describe the relationship between governance and management within the DPI framework?

Accepted Answer

Governance provides the direction and oversight necessary to ensure organizational alignment.. Governance ensures that an organization stays aligned with stakeholder requirements and risk tolerance, while management directs and controls the execution of tasks to achieve those goals. Understanding this distinction is critical for DPI because it clarifies the escalation path for decision-making. When governance is separated from management, the organization can achieve better strategic alignment while maintaining operational agility during improvement cycles.

Answer

Governance is primarily responsible for the day-to-day execution of operational workflows.

Answer

Management is solely responsible for determining the risk appetite of the organization.

Answer

Governance and management are interchangeable roles that should be unified in one team.

Question 15

What is the significance of the 'four dimensions of service management' in DPI?

Accepted Answer

They ensure that all factors are considered for a holistic and successful service.. The four dimensions represent the holistic view required for successful service management. By considering Organizations and People, Information and Technology, Partners and Suppliers, and Value Streams and Processes, a strategist ensures that no critical aspect of a service is overlooked. This prevents the common pitfall of focusing only on technology, ensuring that all improvement efforts are balanced, sustainable, and capable of delivering the intended value across the entire service ecosystem.

Governance is the framework that ensures an organization is managed in line with its objectives and regulatory obligations. In the DPI domain, it provides the boundaries and the decision-making criteria that allow management to steer the ship effectively. Without strong governance, there is no way to ensure that planning and improvement activities remain aligned with the organization's strategic purpose and its legal and ethical requirements, ultimately risking organizational drift and mismanagement.

Answer

To handle all the day-to-day technical issues at the service desk level.

Answer

To create all the technical documentation for new software releases.

Answer

To perform individual performance reviews for all staff members annually.

Question 17

When applying the DPI principle of 'Start where you are,' what is the primary risk an organization should evaluate?

Accepted Answer

The risk of retaining obsolete practices that add no value. The 'Start where you are' principle requires assessing the current state to identify what can be reused. The primary risk is 'confirmation bias' or relying on legacy processes that are no longer relevant, leading to the preservation of waste. By critically evaluating existing assets, organizations ensure they do not carry over obsolete practices that hinder agility or add unnecessary cost to the new target state.

Answer

The risk of ignoring external market trends

Answer

The risk of insufficient budget for new tools

Answer

The risk of poor communication during the transition

Question 18

When applying the 'Focus on Value' principle in a 'Direct, Plan and Improve' scenario, what is the best way to determine if a service remains valuable?

Accepted Answer

Solicit regular feedback from the customer on outcomes.. The most effective way to determine value is to continuously monitor and measure the service against the outcomes the customer expects. Value is defined by the customer, not the provider. By engaging in ongoing dialogue and analyzing performance data, a strategist ensures that the service remains aligned with the customer's changing business needs, allowing for timely improvements and preventing the delivery of services that no longer serve a meaningful purpose.

Answer

Calculate the total cost of ownership every month.
